3 Program Description Graduate study in Exercise Science is designed to enhance the HHPS teaching techniques and to enable the recipient of the MSE degree to: 1. Achieve new and broadened academic competencies through course work. 2. Achieve more effective teaching techniques through methodology courses. 3. Develop competencies in research. 4. Provide professional and academic training for those desiring to teach or administer in HHPS programs at the post-secondary level. 5. Understand the impact of science and its relationship to success in HHPS. Satisfactory Progress Graduate students working on a graduate degree must maintain an overall GPA of 3.0 to continue in good standing. Graduate students who do not maintain an overall GPA of 3.0 will be placed on probation for the next 6 credit hours. If they fail to raise their GPA to a 3.0, they will be removed from their program. Appeals may be made to the appropriate School office and subsequently to the Graduate Council. Program of Study In the term of the enrollment immediately following admission to a graduate degree program, the student should complete a Program of Study indicating the courses that have been agreed upon and approved by the advisor and department chair. Program of Study forms may be obtained from the student s advisor, Graduate Office or appropriate School office. After the forms are completed, they should be signed by the specified individuals. Students wishing to make changes in their Program of Study need approval of their advisor, department chair, and the Dean of Natural and Social Sciences. Substantial changes may require a new Program of Study form. The graduate student must complete at least 50% of the course work from WSC faculty to meet the residency requirement. Transfer Credit MSE A maximum of 18 graduate credits, subject to evaluation by the Director of Graduate Studies and the Dean of Education and Counseling, may be transferred from another regionally accredited graduate institution and applied toward a degree from this College. Only transfer credit of B grade or better will be accepted. A B- is not acceptable. No more than one-half of the course work for the education core may be transfer credit, except in programs defined by a specific articulation agreement. For more information on articulation agreements, contact the appropriate School office. Filing for Graduation Students must fill out the Application for Graduation form filed no later than the last day of the second week of the semester in which graduation is intended. The form should be requested through the graduate office ( ). File Papers/Theses File papers and theses must be on file with the graduate office no later than 28 days before the scheduled graduation date.

4 MSE Degree Admission Criteria 1. One official set of transcripts from the undergraduate institution conferring the baccalaureate degree must be sent directly to the WSC Admissions Office 2. Students must have on file with the School of Education and Counseling a letter to the Dean of the School of Education and Counseling requesting admittance to their desired program. The letter must contain the following information: (a) reason and purpose for entering the program, (b) professional experience and preparation, (c) expectations for the program, (d) future aspirations or goals, and future endeavors once degree is earned. 3. Students must have on file with the School of Education and Counseling two recommendation forms from current employers, or previous employers. The recommendations cannot be from peers or people the student is currently supervising or has supervised in the past. The recommendation forms address the student s academic and leadership potential. 4. Complete the Graduate Record Exam (GRE) within the first semester of enrollment and achieve a composite score (Verbal + Quantitative) of 280. The analytical writing score will be used to facilitate student assessment. Students without GRE scores can be provisionally admitted to the graduate program for one semester. Further information concerning the GRE exam can be obtained by contacting the Graduate Office. 5. Admission for non-probationary status is a 2.75 undergraduate GPA. Students who do not meet this requirement may be admitted on probationary status. Probationary students must be approved by the department graduate faculty following completion of nine credit hours. 6. Students may be required to take certain undergraduate courses if their undergraduate preparation is determined to be deficient by the professor-in-charge. These courses may not be considered part of the student s 36 hour program of study for the MSE. **Note: Upon admission to the MSE Exercise Science program, the goals sheet (included in this manual) must be signed and dated by the graduate student before official admittance is complete. In addition, the contract (also included in this manual) must be signed and dated. Advisors Based upon research interests and the goals sheet, graduate students will be assigned an advisor within their first semester at WSC. It is the student s responsibility to assure that they are working with their advisor to follow a program of study, complete their 15 hour review, request to take the comprehensive exam, and meet all deadlines. Plagiarism and Academic Dishonesty The faculty of the HHPS Department considers any form of dishonesty a serious offense. Any form of academic dishonesty may result in dismissal from the MSE in Exercise Science Graduate Program. Academic dishonesty may be defined as but is not limited to the following list: Cheating. Fabricating written assignments; giving aid to any student or receiving aid without the consent of the professor on tests, papers, quizzes, assignments, or examinations Copying. Laboratory and other work (papers, assignments, etc ) are to be your own work. Do not copy another student s work. Plagiarism. The act of presenting the information, ideas, or phrasing of another as if they were one s own. Such an act is plagiarism whether by ignorance of proper scholarly procedures, failure to observe them, or deliberate intent to deceive. Ignorance of what constitutes plagiarism, is not an excuse. Stealing. The act of taking that which belongs to another with intent to achieve an unfair advantage in academic matters, whether or not the advantage is a personal one, and/or assisting

5 others in such acts. (Examples include theft of library materials, computer software/equipment, or instructor s examinations, etc.) Lying (in academic matters). The intentional statement of an untruth made with deliberate intent to mislead another. Lying during the process of resolving an alleged offense is considered academic dishonesty. Forgery is considered an act of lying and thus an act of academic dishonesty. Therefore, the unauthorized signing or false representation on a college document is forgery. Double Assignments. The use of one assignment (e.g. paper) to fulfill the requirements of more than one course will be considered academic dishonesty, unless the student has received proper permission from the appropriate instructor(s).

6 MSE Exercise Science Contract Department of Health, Human Performance, and Sport (402) In order to meet the requirements for my Master s Degree Program in the Department of Health, Human Performance, and Sport at Wayne State College I understand that: I must complete the Graduate Record Exam (GRE) by the end of my first semester of classes (even if I am not full-time). A hold will be placed on registration and I will not be allowed to enroll for further classes until the GRE has been completed. I must visit with my advisor to discuss my graduate program goals and to develop a program of study. The program of study must be completed by the end of my first semester of classes (even if I am not a full-time student). A hold will be placed on registration and I will not be allowed to enroll for future graduate classes until the program of study has been completed and is on file in the graduate office. For the Exercise Science master s degree, I will participate in an oral review after 15 hours of course work regarding my progress in the program with appropriate graduate faculty present. Following this oral review, graduate faculty members will determine whether or not I will be officially accepted into the HHPS graduate program. If the decision is for acceptance I may continue in the program. If the decision is for nonacceptance, I understand that I will not be permitted to continue taking courses in this program. I understand that during the semester of my graduation, comprehensive exams will be conducted on the WSC campus. If I finish my classwork in the summer, I will take the comprehensive exam the following fall semester. The dates of these exams are the Wednesday before fall midterm break (fall semester) and the Wednesday before spring midterm break (spring semester). The comprehensive exam will consist of questions from classes I have taken on my program of study. If I do not pass the comprehensive exam, as determined by the HHPS graduate faculty, I will be allowed to repeat the exam one time. Any repeat exams must be scheduled and taken within one week of receiving my results from the graduate faculty if I want to graduate in the semester of the exam, otherwise I will have to delay my graduation until the following semester. If I do not pass on the repeat exam then I understand that I will not be allowed to graduate with my master s degree from the HHPS graduate programs and I will be removed from the program. I am responsible for filing numerous documents in a timely fashion in order to fulfill degree requirements and graduate to include but not limited to: program of study, 9-15 hour review form, request to take comprehensive exams, application for graduation. If I fail to file the appropriate forms in a timely manner, it may delay my graduation from Wayne State College. I understand that graduate study involves more than just taking classes. Research, writing, and independent thought are essential for developing my skills as a master s degree candidate. It will require devotion on my part to meet these requirements.
