2 The new short film 'A day will come my future will be your past' by the artist duo Sarah & Charles will premier at the Ghent Film Festival on October 16th, after which the film will be the central piece in a large new solo exhibition at Netwerk / center for contemporary art, Aalst which is opening on December 5, h00 and will run until March 6, 2016 ( art.be). SYNOPSIS A day will come my future will be your past is about life itself and the memory of it, about expectations and disappointments. On an early summer's day in a park, two young women are reminiscing about their former friendship and personal life. Their dialogue takes place in the present and they are using the present tense to express themselves. However, after a while it becomes clear that the life they are talking about, is actually a projection of a picture of the future. Their conversation is about transitoriness and interchangeability, and about the contradictory concept of 'time'. "I wonder, why can I remember my past, but not remember my future?", one of the women is asking herself. Then, the film itself becomes a part of the narrative. The 'fourth wall', so to speak, is knocked down. The illusion fed by an extensive styling (an idyllic setting, attractive young people, soft colors and delicate music) is soon broken when the voices appear to be dubbed. The conversation feels unnatural and the directors do little effort to conceal it. A bit later, one sees voice actresses record the text in the studio. Although the viewer chooses to forget, he is constantly reminded by Sarah & Charles that everything is put in scene. The viewer is invited to construct the storyline himself. 2
3 CREW For this film, Sarah & Charles again chose to collaborate with the same team that previously worked on their musical 'Props for Drama: Suspension of Disbelief, the short film that was part of the solo exhibition at Z33 Hasselt (2013). The music for instance, is composed by Lieven Dousselaere and the images are shot by Hans Bruch jr.. Bettee Molnár and Stine Sampers take the leading roles. Their lines are recorded by actress Elsa May Averill and performer Bryana Fritz. The collaboration with the Kortrijks Kinderland Choir, conducted by Fries Verschaete and Marleen Annemans, results in a unique soundtrack: ethereal voices that are humming a repetitive melody. The acapella singing of the children creates an atmosphere that evokes certain desires and nostalgic feelings, and that contributes to the idealization of the environment and the story. 5 BIO SARAH & CHARLES Sarah & Charles' s work comprises various forms of arts: installations, decors, sculptures and videos. The artists have a particular interest in narration, fiction and mise- en- scene. In their work, both front and backstage are visible. That way the viewer can at the same time observe the construction of the fiction and the fiction itself. Their entire artistic practice revolves around the creation and simultaneously subversion of illusions. On the one hand they stimulate the imagination through the use of images that reflect the illusions fostered by the viewer, on the other hand they constantly dismantle those illusions. Besides staging, memory is also an important theme in the work of Sarah & Charles, memories and the personal experience of it. The artist duo from Brussels, graduated as Laureate of the Higher Institute for Fine Arts (HISK) in Ghent. Barely 6 years later (2013) they had a large- scale solo project, The Suspension of Disbelief', in the art center Z33 in Hasselt. The next year they were asked to realize a large- scale scenography for the Kunstenfestivaldesarts. A day will come my future will be your past' is already their 3rd short film.
