1 FACULTY SENATE MEETING FEBRUARY 10, 2014 VICE PRESIDENT FOR EDUCATION S REPORT ACADEMIC RESOURCES P. Ciejka The Library is hosting the National Library of Medicine s traveling exhibit, The Literature of Prescription: Charlotte Perkins Gilman and "The Yellow Wall Paper". The exhibit highlights the life of artist and writer Charlotte Perkins Gilman who was discouraged from pursuing a career to preserve her health. The exhibition explores the story behind Gilman's indictment of the medical profession and the social conventions that restricted women's professional and creative opportunities. The exhibit is on display on the second floor of the Library until February 22, INTERPROFESSIONAL EDUCATION P. Watson Faculty Opportunities The IPE office has designated funds for Faculty Engagement Awards. These awards seek to support faculty pursuing training, attending conferences, or engaging in initiatives that strengthen interprofessional education, collaborative practice, and teamwork at UTMB. Interested faculty may contact IPE for further information. Spirituality and Clinical Care Module is currently underway under the leadership of Dr. Carol Wiggs and other faculty. Student Engagement Awards Through UTMB s Interprofessional Education initiative and the support of all of the Schools, students have the opportunity to earn distinctions and awards based on participation at three levels: IPE Volunteers, IPE Leaders, or IPE Scholars. In addition, students may apply to receive grants to attend interprofessional conferences or initiate a new IPE activity. More detailed information is available from the IPE office. Students may contact Julie Parrish at ext or jparrish@utmb.edu. Interprofessional Education Day: The Future of Health Care Delivery (March 26, 2014, 1 5pm). Dr. Matthew Dacso will provide the keynote address, entitled Teaching a Common Language Lessons Learned from Interprofessional Global Health Education. Currently, 16 workshops are scheduled to rotate throughout the afternoon, many of which focus on the importance of teamwork and communication to the future of health care. 1

Lisa Cain and Bill Ameredes Topic: Research Education and Training Council Draft Policy Student Conduct and Discipline Regents Outstanding Teaching Awards Results of Nomination Committee OFFICE OF INSTITUTIONAL EFFECTIVENESS J. McKee 1) The SACS Fifth Year Interim Report (FYIR) process continues apace with the submittal document at about 85% completion. Formatting for style and electronic delivery is continuing with a March 15 th internal deadline for completion. 2) The OIE annual assessment meetings with academic program leadership will begin as soon as the FYIR is completed. We will post all assessment plans for your review at that time. 2

5 New Faculty The School of Nursing has welcomed two new faculty members: Frances Sonstein, RN, MSN, FNP, CNS, Assistant Professor, Master s Program Ms. Sonstein has 38 years of teaching experience. She joins us from The University of Texas at Austin School of Nursing where she taught for the past 20 years in Medical/Surgical nursing. Dora Kuntz, RN, MSNEd Assistant Professor, Baccalaureate Program Ms. Kuntz has joined us from UTMB s Institute for Translational Sciences Clinical Research Center where she served as Research Nurse Supervisor. She has previous teaching experience as a PBL Instructor for UTMB School of Nursing. 2 Page
6 Programmatic Achievements The Galveston Chamber of Commerce gave UTMB School of Nursing an award in recognition of its status as the first nursing school in Texas. This award was part of the Chambers acknowledgement of the 175th anniversary of the city of Galveston. The New York City based Jonas Center for Nursing and Veterans Healthcare has chosen The University of Texas Medical Branch to participate in the Jonas Scholars program for 2014 with a $20,000 grant to support one PhD Jonas Nurse Leader Scholar and one DNP Jonas Nurse Leader Scholar over the next two years (August 2014-September 2016). 3 Page
7 Faculty Achievements Dr. Suzanne Alton earned the Doctor of Nursing Practice degree from the University of Alabama. Dr. Alton was also recognized by the Dean with a Faculty Achievement Award. The American Journal of Nursing Book of the Year Award for 2013 was awarded to Sex Trafficking: A Clinical Guide for Nurses. Dr. Patricia Crane was a co-author of the book. Dr. Cheyenne Martin was awarded $9,500 in private grant funding from Verbe et Lumier Association in Paris, France. These funds will be used to support of the upcoming exhibit, Medical Warriors: Physicians and Nurses Engaged in French Resistance During the Holocaust which Dr. Martin will curate at the Holocaust Museum Houston. Dr. Kathleen Murphy has been appointed to the National Association of School Nurses, Advisory Committee for Asthma Clinical Guidelines. Dr. Charlotte Wisnewski served as an American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) and University Health System Consortium (UHSC) accreditation site visitor for the Nurse Residency Program at Emory St. Joseph Hospital in Atlanta, Georgia. 4 Page
