6 4 Widening Participation activities The Widening Participation Office is pleased to offer schools and colleges a selection of on campus activity days for groups of young people from Year 6 through to post-16. Our activities aim to raise young people s awareness of and capacity for higher education and help support schools and colleges with raising attainment. All activities are supported by Student Ambassadors who are carefully selected from our current undergraduate and post-graduate students. They undergo a rigorous selection and training process. Although student numbers have increased in recent years some groups of people are still underrepresented in higher education. Universities have fewer students from families without a background of higher education or with lower incomes, with disabilities, from a care background, from certain minority ethnic groups or holding vocational qualifications. Therefore, the University of Bath provides a range of widening participation activities targeted at under-represented groups. We therefore ask secondary schools and colleges to identify learners who have the potential to benefit from higher education AND meet one or more of the following criteria: A B C D E F Lives in low participation neighbourhood as defined by home postcode Parents work in a non-managerial, non-professional, non-technical occupation Is, or has been, a looked-after young person Has a disability or specific learning difficulty e.g. dyslexia Neither parent attended university in the UK or abroad Is on the Pupil Premium register If schools or colleges have any questions regarding the above please do not hesitate to contact us. The events below are all based at the University of Bath campus. If you would like to find out more, or request a booking form, please contact widening-participation@bath.ac.uk or tel: To find out more about widening participation activities please contact: widening-participation@bath.ac.uk or visit our website:

13 Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences 11 Education Economics Languages Politics and International Relations Psychology The Department of Education can offer school visits to give presentations on aspects of its undergraduate Education with Psychology Degree programme. These sessions aim to generate discussion among attendees about how young children and adolescents learn and develop in contemporary British society and across the world. Students on our undergraduate economics programmes run the successful University of Bath Economics Society Team (BEST). They can visit local schools to deliver a day of highly interactive economics lessons, aimed at increasing students knowledge above and beyond the A-level syllabus. The society can also provide information about studying economics at degree level. School visits can be carried out, sometimes with students who are currently studying one of the language programmes that we offer. The Faculty also hosts an annual Language Teachers Event at the University to enable attendees to discuss contemporary issues in language teaching and how to prepare students for languages at an undergraduate level. Senior academics are able to provide engaging guest lectures relating to topical issues. Topics include Zombie Nation: Devolution and the end of British Politics and Memory, History, Identity and Conflict. The Department of Psychology is pleased to visit schools to give presentations on its undergraduate programmes and what you can expect from studying a psychology degree. Sport and Exercise Science Sport and Social Sciences Sport and Exercise Science presents an excellent opportunity for those that have a passion to combine their strengths and interests in science with those in sport and exercise. This talk will explore the fascinating applications of scientific principles to sport and exercise, principally through one of three branches: biomechanics, physiology and psychology. Given the global growth and presence of the sports industry, we are becoming increasingly interested in sport and society. This talk explore the relationships between sport, power, politics and our cities, identities, bodies, health, lifestyles and values. Sport clearly matters today; by understanding it from a social science perspective, how can we understand more about our own health and social lives? And, what can students gain from thinking critically and seriously about sport? The Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences offers a wide range of events and activities for schools and colleges. Capacity is limited and early booking is advisable. Please contact outreach@bath.ac.uk in the first instance.

14 12 Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences Social and Policy Sciences An overview of Sociology (secondary school) Have you ever contemplated the causes of poverty, considered the reasons for crime or thought about what produces stress or fears around the threat of terrorism? How do the media shape our identities? What is society? This session provides an overview of these themes. Policy in your daily life (secondary school) Few young people think about the role of the government in their lives. Policies that directly affect individual well-being are termed social policies. This session outlines and discusses social policies and how they link to the lives of young people. Corruption in political life (secondary school) This session discusses how lack of transparency in politics and corruption affects our lives. Why should sociologists be interested in death? (secondary school) This talk will introduce students to some of the key sociological questions related to death, dying and bereavement. In addition, we can offer topical debates surrounding issues such as assisted suicide, and death rituals in modern culture. How do we understand racism and what do governments do about it? (secondary school) Sociology can help us understand complicated issues such as race, ethnicity, racial disadvantage and racism. Together with Social Policy these two subjects can help our understanding of what racism is and how it might best be dealt with. How pets and therapy assistance animals can support people with autism, ADHD, mental health and other disabilities (secondary school and primary) This session explains how social groupings have developed by exploring the relationships we have with other people and with animals. International development (secondary school) There are a range of interactive sessions given on the theme of social justice in international development. These include: (i) What do we understand by development? What is poverty? (ii) Which criteria do we use to assess poverty? What happens if we use different criteria?
