2 PAYMENT GATEWAY EXPANSION FOR PAYMENT SERVICE PROVIDERS 2 SPEEDING UP ACCESS THROUGH PAY.ON S PAYMENT GATEWAY EXPANSION FOR PAYMENT SERVICE PROVIDERS #1 CASE An established PSP had a large merchant who wanted to expand their online business from Central and Western Europe in several new Eastern European markets. #2 CHALLENGE The PSP requires a solid strategy that could be rapidly implemented across a fragmented and less developed region. #3 SOLUTION PAY.ON s Gateway Expansion is a routing gateway that enables payment providers to access PAY.ON s global network through a single interface. #4 RESULT The PSP pursued further geographical expansion in order to maximize the benefits of the global coverage achieved through integration of PAY.ON s Gateway Expansion.
3 PAYMENT GATEWAY EXPANSION FOR PAYMENT SERVICE PROVIDERS 3 #1 CASE An established payment service provider (PSP), based in Central Europe, had a large merchant who had successfully established their business in Central and Western Europe. The merchant wanted to further expand their online business into several Eastern European markets, and sought to roll out their online services in these new markets within six months. #2 CHALLENGE The PSP required a solid strategy that could be rapidly implemented across fragmented region and less developed region. The merchant already had a retail presence in some of the targeted countries, however the planned rollout required a solution that would provide all necessary tools for expansion into Ukraine, Russia, Poland, Romania, and Turkey. Initial research showed the Eastern European payment landscape to be particularly fragmented, with hundreds of acquirers and card scheme providers acting locally. Consumer acceptance of payment methods also varied considerably from country to country. The PSP had limited technical resources and bandwidth to provide their merchant with the planned expansion within the desired timeframe. However, the high-profile nature of the merchant meant that the PSP sought a solution that would ultimately increase (rather than lose) business. Concluding that they would need the support of a suitable partner to facilitate this expansion and overcome the challenges, the PSP investigated the options available. BUSINESS CHALLENGES: Some potential partners were also major competitors in the PSP s core markets (Central Europe). Only a small number of players in the markets targeted for expansion had a reasonable degree of coverage. An ambitious rollout schedule, coupled with low projected transaction volumes in the initial stages, required a cost-effective solution. TECHNICAL CHALLENGES: The merchant wanted to build upon their existing retail banking relationships in the targeted markets, extending these relationships to include ecommerce acceptance when feasible. This required an expansion partner capable of quickly integrating new connections in new countries. Simple integration was needed to minimise effort on the part of the PSP and speed up time to market. The PSP wanted to avoid managing account configuration on multiple platforms, due to time constraints. They also wanted a solution that would avoid maintenance of the connections.
4 PAYMENT GATEWAY EXPANSION FOR PAYMENT SERVICE PROVIDERS 4 #3 SOLUTION PAY.ON s Gateway Expansion is a routing gateway that enables payment providers to access PAY.ON s global network through a single interface. PAY.ON operates and maintains the fastest-growing global network of providers (i.e. receivers) and schemes, giving the PSP the coverage they needed to facilitate expansion in the target Eastern European markets. Implementation of PAY.ON s Gateway Expansion started in May 2009, and in early November the merchant launched in five eastern European countries, just in time for the Christmas shopping season. The PSP integrated with PAY.ON s routing gateway, allowing them to access existing receiver connectors as well as four new ones that were established as part of the project. The new connections allowed the merchant to utilize their existing banking relationships as requested. HOW PAY.ON SOLVED THE BUSINESS CHALLENGES PAY.ON s Gateway Expansion does not compete with the PSP s business, but rather extends and builds upon it. The PSP is able to access expert knowledge about local markets, players and conditions through PAY.ON s consultancy services. Efficient processes and specialization allowed the PSP to test drive the new markets with a key merchant client in a cost-efficient manner. PAY.ON s Gateway Expansion solution provided a solid base for future growth in other markets.
