2 ABOUT THE POSITION Use your creative problem solving and design thinking skills to help create social impact around the world! Many international development projects suffer from good intentions but bad user design! You ll explore the root causes of problems and design solutions to create more appropriate products and services for the world s vulnerable, poor and marginalized. At 17 Triggers we work around the world using design thinking, creative problem solving and human centered design to help bring creative solutions to some of the world s biggest challenges. We are interested in hiring someone creative who understands how to design and develop solutions for people, utility and context. Our work is in international development, but we are seeking applicants with a proven history of applying design thinking, UX, UCD, human factors, or creative problem solving regardless of if in a former life you were designing solutions for social impact, for big-business, or even as an academic exercise. If you are excited by the prospect of service design with a flare of creativity; if you are a constant innovator; if you are a master of simple solutions to complex problems; if you are compelled to do meaningful work and committed to help create social impact around the world then this is the job for you!

3 RESPONSIBILITIES Lead ethnographic and user experience research Many of our clients come to us with a problem, for example: despite many sanitation innovations, many rural Cambodian still practice open defecation. But why is this the case? Your job is to use your research skills to learn more about the problem and underlying challenges that affect the problem. Design and facilitate workshops with our clients and end users to learn more about the problem or challenge Plan for and lead field research to explore the challenge in context. This will involve user interviews, observational research, participatory action research, etc. Develop solutions through collaborative design Many of our clients come to us with a problem, for example: despite many sanitation innovations, many rural Cambodian still practice open defecation. But why is this the case? Through your research you learn some key challenges: customers need to walk to a market 15 km from their village; at the market they need to find at least three different market stalls to buy all the implements for the sanitation innovations they want. In this example, you know how to use user centered design to create a more appropriate service and sales system that meets the user s needs. Your job is to drive social impact through creative solutions that address the real problems for users! Lead user experience design of new services/solutions for international development projects Continued...

4 Collaborate with 17 Triggers team, clients and users to generate solutions Develop conceptual sketches, wireframes, visual mockups, and prototypes Collaborate with visual designers, product developers and page developers to derive the most optimal solution Support a culture of experimentation by conceiving/planning qualitative and quantitative user tests to affect key metrics and enhance the user experience - meaning, get out from behind your desk and test your assumptions and ideas in the office and in the field! Other important responsibilities Project Management Client Management Budget Management - typically of project budgets between $20, ,000 USD Report Writing - you can analyze and synthesize complex information into brief reports or powerpoints QUALITIES FOR SUCCESS Experience with creative problems solving, applied design thinking, or Human-Centered Design (HCD) methods Strong facilitation skills Excellent listener and empathetic No ego: you may have gone to XYZ awesome-town school, but you don t brag about it and it doesn t define who you are Ability to lead field-work in developing countries Equipped with markers, post-its, stones and bottle caps, you excel at process mapping or other forms of visual mapping and/or participatory research techniques Experience managing multiple projects, rallying a team towards a goal, and clients who loved working with you Entrepreneurial spirit - you can add to 17T s methods and operations by bringing your experience and proactively contributing to making 17T a better place Quick problem solver (e.g. a 5 person focus groups turns into a 60 person event and you know how to handle this)

5 THE FINE DETAILS Fluency in English 7+ years relevant experience Degree in design, user experience, service design, human factors and ergonomics, international development, education, anthropology, international economics, creative leadership, etc. Graduate degree strongly preferred Ready to live in Phnom Penh, Cambodia for at least 2 years Experience facilitating ideation, concept generation, and critiques with fellow designers, engineers, and other key partners, developing and leading Design Thinking facilitation and/or other training sessions and workshops Strong business acumen Excited to join a team aspiring to make a truly positive difference in the world Extroverts and introverts wanted Folks from global South, and developing nations are strongly encouraged to apply Women are strongly encouraged to apply If you do not have experience in international development, that is okay - we love people from the private sector with an open mind INSTRUCTIONS FOR APPLYING: 1.
