Explanation or Examples? published by Lambert Publishing This book is based on the doctoral dissertation Explicit vs implicit instruction in the intermediate level of second language learners of the Japanese particles wa and ga. The current trend of ESL methodologies is mostly focused on communicative, performance-based instruction, however, its effectiveness is in doubt when a target language is very distinct from a mother tongue. Considering that Japanese and English are two very different languages and the concepts for the two Japanese particles are ambiguous, explicit instruction is more useful in order for students to understand the concept and to be able to use each particle appropriately.
4 2013b. Cultural factors motivating Chinese ESL students 2013 Hawaii University International Conferences Education & Technology Math & Engineering Technology The paper is to investigate how the integrative and instrumental motivations work in different ways for students of the East and the West. It has been known that in learning foreign languages, integrative motivation stimulates students learning more than instrumental motivation, however, it was different for Chinese ESL students and the reason was the different cultural background of the students The Awakened One Poetics Joseph S. Spencer, Sr. published by Rochak Publishing This is a volume of English language poems supplemented by translation into different languages. I did Japanese translation for 40 poems. Talks 2013a. Why teaching culture in the foreign language classroom is important? 2013 Midwest Conference on Asian Affairs (MCAA) Recently most language courses offer cultural components to enhance students language ability. By investigating the motivational factors of foreign language learners, the study is to provide empirical support to show that offering cultural experience will be a great motivation for students in foreign language education. 2013b. The effect of shadowing/repeating practice on the elementary level of Japanese students pronunciation Sueyon Seo & Kazuhide Takeuchi 2013 Central Association of Teachers of Japanese (CATJ) The paper is to investigate whether shadowing practice in elementary level language learning improves students pronunciation. Shadowing practice is regarded to be a useful method for improving learners pronunciation and speaking skill; however, its effectiveness is proved mostly advanced level learners. The purpose of the research is to find out if the method is useful on the elementary level as well and how the method can be adopted to the normal language classroom environment Does reading aloud improve foreign language learners speaking ability? 2014 American Association of Teachers of Japanese (AATJ) This paper is published in Global Science and Technology Forum GSTF Jed vol.2, no.1 The purpose of this study is to find ways to enhance foreign language students speaking ability. Many such students are anxious about speaking the target language because they are conscious of their imperfect
5 pronunciation and feel strange about their own voice pronouncing the unfamiliar sound. I wish to explore whether the practice of reading aloud in the classroom addresses this problem. Research in Progress The first one is about the effect of the combined method of shadowing and repeat practice on students' ability to speak This is a continuation of my research of 2013 about the effect of shadowing/repeating practice on beginning-level Japanese students' pronunciation. The purpose of my current study is to find out whether the combination of the two practices has any influence on students' speaking ability. Since my previous work did not involve a control group and the borderline between shadowing and repeat practice was left vague, my present research focuses on how to familiarize students with Japanese sounds by repeating the model conversation regardless of whether shadowing or repeat practice is used. My second project involves interviews with our best students to find out about their learning style and habit in studying Japanese. I would like to know whether students who are very successful in studying Japanese have specific learning styles or habits that help them. I will choose the best students in the 1st and 2nd year courses of our Japanese program, examine Western students' learning styles, and hope to suggest effective ways for students to acquire Japanese.
