7 Differential Scanning Calorimeter (DSC) Canada The most recent advances in microcomputer and microelectronic technologies have been incorporated into the newest DSC design from PerkinElmer, the PYRIS Diamond DSC Differential Scanning Calorimeter. Power Compensated DSC uses two independent furnaces, one for the sample and one for the reference. When an exothermic or endothermic change occurs in the sample material, energy is applied to or removed from one or both furnaces to compensate for the energy change occurring in the sample. This means that the system at all times directly measures energy flow to or from a sample. 9 Canada DSC Sample Pans and Crimpers Standard and Specialty Sample Pans TEA-3 Standard Sample Pans and Crimper Press Standard sample pans are available in aluminum, copper, or gold. PerkinElmer offers sample pans to satisfy the needs of most thermal analysts. The sample is completely enclosed in a highly conductive capsule and distributed in a thin layer such that the internal resistance in the sample itself is very small. Sample pan material and sample holder design have very small thermal resistance. This contributes to a superior thermal conductivity and temperature control between the sample and sample pan. Due to the high thermal conductivities of aluminum, copper and gold, heat transfer is maximized. This means that sample size can be minimized. Because of their high-temperature capabilities, platinum and gold can be used to 730 C. Aluminum Sample Pans and Covers Used with nonvolatile solid samples, such as plastics and polymers. Routinely used for applications such as polymer melting, crystallization, glass transitions of polymers, thermoplastics, and thermosets. Pans are crimped but not hermetically sealed (400 of each) Copper Sample Pans and Covers Can be used for samples that have transitions that occur above the temperature range of the Al pans. Typical applications include antioxidant testing, thermoset and thermoplastic glass transition, and melting point determinations (200 of each) Gold Sample Pans and Covers Used for any non-metal, i.e., ceramics, coal, soils, or minerals. Can also be used for any material that reacts with aluminum or which must be heated over 600 C (10 of each) Standard Sample Pan Crimper Press Used to crimp covers on standard DSC pans of aluminum, gold, and copper. Design incorporates a replaceable crimper head Replacement Crimper Head Specialty Sample Pans Alumina Sample Pans and Covers Used for oxidation studies of metals, minerals, ceramics, clays, and soils. 10 TEA-4 DSC Sample Pans and Crimpers Large Volume and Volatile Sample Pans US LARGE VOLUME O-RING SEALED STAINLESS STEEL PANS Capsules contain the sample in a sealed environment throughout an experiment. The Viton O-Ring allows formation of a seal which suppresses the vaporization of a solvent or contains a volatile reaction product, thereby eliminating the interfering effects of the heat of vaporization. Sealed capsules prevent any mass loss. Capsules can withstand an internal pressure of 24 atmospheres. High internal pressure capability allows water samples to be heated higher than 100 C. Capacity of 60 microliters. Large sample capacity yields higher sensitivity. Operating range of -40 C to 300 C unless otherwise limited by sample vapor pressure. Can be used on PYRIS Diamond DSC, PYRIS 1 DSC, DSC 6, DSC 7, DSC-4, and DSC-2 instruments. Major Applications The study of aqueous biological solutions (such as protein in water) where the dilution requires large sample sizes and water vaporization must be suppressed. Epoxy phenolic curing and vulcanization of rubber where the loss of volatiles can otherwise make interpretation difficult. Large Volume SS Pans, Covers, and O-Rings (20 of each) (1000 of each) Under no circumstances should the capsules be heated above 300 C. Any application requiring the heating beyond 200 C or where gaseous decomposition products may be generated should first be tested outside of the instrument. Always use guard ring inserts in conjunction with the sealed capsules. VOLATILE SAMPLE PANS Volatile sample pans are used with volatile solid or liquid samples which exert significant vapor pressure at the temperature of interest. Available in both aluminum and gold pans. Pans can withstand an internal pressure of two atmospheres (30 psi). Aqueous solutions can be scanned up to and through 100 C to observe solute behavior. Using the Vapor Pressure sample pan kit will allow a higher temperature to be reached. The heats of fusion of materials which sublime can be determined accurately. The effect of an enclosed atmosphere on thermal behavior of a sample can be observed. Capsules have an effective volume of 20 microliters. Gold pans are available for samples requiring temperatures above 600 C. High pressure capsules permit the study of explosive materials and can be used in any situation where the advantage of a self-generating atmosphere is to be employed. The accessory operates with the PYRIS 1 DSC, DSC 7, DSC-4, and DSC-2 Differential Scanning Calorimeters that use the unique PerkinElmer power compensated principle. Pressure range is 42 Bar (600 psi) maximum; temperature range is 40 C to 600 C. Typical applications include: Oxidation testing of oils, fats, foods, and plastics Curing and crosslinking reactions Suppression of evaporation of volatiles Analysis of pressure-dependent chemical reactions There are built-in connections for a liquid cooling system (tap water or circulating system).
