3 Dear Sir / Madam, I would like to present to you our Catalogue containing the winning innovative products and technologies from the 12 th Polish Product of the Future competition. These are all modern solutions developed by Polish Scientists within a variety of research and development units and within our fi nest technological companies All items featured were chosen from numerous projects sent to us by a panel of experts from various fi elds of technology. The high level of innovativeness and quality of these products provides them with signifi cantly high market potential. In this time of growing competition, Polish companies recognise the need to base their activities both within knowledge but also through incorporating the latest achievements of technology. I would like to draw your attention, especially the attention of those who are looking for new modern technological solutions to implement them in your companies, to the many technological, economic and social values that are championed by the solutions awarded within this catalogue. For dynamic economic development of the country, the role of innovation is highly relevant. That is why the Polish Agency for Enterprise Development has organized the Competition for innovative solutions for more than 12 years. We encourage all creators of innovative solutions, be they entrepreneurs, representatives of R&D units, scientifi c institutes, experimental factories as well as individual inventors to participate in this competition. The entry procedure is simple and the access is free of charge. Competition promotes innovative projects which are diffi cult by their nature, sometimes they are risky and it could be a cause of small interest in them from institutions. I am convinced that the honour of receiving the prestigious title of the Polish Product of the Future contributes to the effective promotion of the products and technologies presented here, towards gaining investors and, furthermore, facilitates the entry into the Polish market and the global market. 4 PAED exhibition stand at the Innovations-Technologies-Machines trade fair in Poznań The Polish Product of the Future Competition (PPF) has been organized annually since Since 2002, the Competition s organizer has been the Polish Agency for Enterprise Development (PAED). The Competition s aim is to promote and disseminate achievements of creators of innovative methods and technologies which are likely to conquer the Polish market. The Competition is aimed at innovative enterprises, research and development units, experimental establishments and individual inventors from the European Union countries. The condition of participation in the Competition is presentation of a new, innovative product or technology. Since 2008, the Competition has been held in 4 categories including: product of the future at the pre-implementation stage, technology of the future at the pre-implementation stage, product of the future at the implementation stage, technology of the future at the implementation stage. Competition projects are evaluated for the solution s innovativeness. The expected environmental impact is evaluated as well, including energy-saving, use of secondary materials, possession of the patent protection and the market demand for the product. In the category product and technology of the future at the preimplementation stage, solutions which are led at the most to the stage of implementation works, may compete for the award. In the category of solutions at the implementation stage, the submitted products should be implemented in production practice for at least 12 months, however, no longer than 21 months prior to submission of a project to the Competition. One award and distinctions are granted in each category. The winners of the Polish Product of the Future Award receive a statuette, diploma, possibility of using the Polish Product of the Future Logo and Slogan in correspondence and promotion, assistance in product promotion. During the twelve-year-long history of the PPF Competition, several hundred innovative products and technologies from various fi elds of technology have been submitted. The Jury of the Competition, on the basis of opinions of independent experts evaluating the competition application, has awarded 25 projects and has granted 51 distinctions. The majority of projects which have gained the Jury of the Competition s recognition also achieved the economic success. Some of the fi nal products, developed on the basis of submitted competition applications, conquered the Polish market and some of them became valued export goods. As it results from the information received from project creators, their market successes are partially created by promotional actions carried out by PAED. The Agency promotes actively the Competition winners at international fairs 04

5 Exhibition of Polish Inventions Awarded at the World Exhibition of Innovations in Warsaw and exhibitions of innovation home and abroad. Catalogues, folders, multimedia presentations and short fi lms on awarded solutions are published. The information and articles on awarded solutions are published in the Polish and industrial press and presented at numerous conferences and seminars dedicated to innovativeness. The winners are also invited to participate in radio and TV programmes. Within the framework of promotion, PAED cooperates with the Polish Promotional Logo Foundation Teraz Polska (Poland Now) for innovative solutions due to which it is entitled to nominate PPF winners to this award. The PPF Competition award scores additionally in the content-related evaluation of the project submitted to the Operational Programme - Innovative Economy within the measure 4.4. New investments with a high innovative potential. Since 2007, the Internet portal dedicated to the Competition and its Winners has been managed (www.ppp.pi.gov.pl) The number of applications submitted to the Competition and their high substantive level confi rm PAED s belief that it is worth and necessary to continue this initiative and disseminate its results both in science and industry. 8 TECHNOLOGICAL LINE FOR RECYCLING RAW MATERIALS FROM MULTILAYER CONTAINERS In 2004 Izabella Bogacka and Stanisław Lewandowski, technologists of the Kamitec company, worked out the method of recycling raw materials from multilayer containers. The method allows for accurate separation and allocation of clean elements with effectiveness close to 100%. The method consists in rinsing out polythene, which bonds together single layers of the container with simultaneous or consequent allocation of elements, i.e. aluminum and cardboard. Contact person: Jakub Jurzak/Business Development Director phone fax Innovativeness There are 4 methods of utilization multilayered materials containing cardboard known worldwide: processing into a different kind of material: for example, boards in the construction business, however, usually such fi lling or replacing cardboard or plaster elements are heavy and noncompetitive, paper method: in this method techniques used for paper production from wood and rags are applied; as a result of very high energy expenditures, 40-60% of polluted cellulose is regained; aluminum and plastics are left as a troublesome, polluted with cellulose, wet waste, acetic method consisting of applying 80% of acetic acid leading to a ruinous separation of plastics, cellulose and aluminum with regeneration of acetic acid: a disadvantage of this method is great demand for energy and application of acetic acid extremely easily perceptible and at the same time difficult to remove; raw materials 08

9 were obtained for cleansing; the method has not been implemented, Kamitec chemical method consisting in warming multilayered packages or their scraps in organic solvent in which the polythene dissolves, and therefore it is easy to separate aluminum and cardboard; after vaporizing the solvent the raw materials are fi t for re-processing at specialist units (paper mills and foundries) to ready products; plastics are being processed into fuels. Since organic fl uids used as solvents unlike the acetic acid or water have a very low vaporization temperature and the specifi c heat capacity, thermal and electric energy use is disproportionately low compared with previously mentioned methods. Apart from that the Kamitec chemical method is characterized by a lack of sewage and waste. Benefits As a result of applying this method it is possible to regain all raw materials being included in a package with a high productivity of c.a %. Remaining 0.1 % constitute pollutants being an ingredient of aluminum. One should emphasize that this method is characterized by a low energy expenditure, lack of waste and lack of sewage which in respect of the regulations constitutes its undoubted advantage. One should also emphasize that the Kamitec chemical method is going forward to meet union directives, because it is characterized by a low energy expenditure and allows for considerable savings of the high-energy-intensive aluminum, and fi nally limits CO 2 emission into the atmosphere related with its production. 09

President of the Board, Managing Director phone , 58 In the project there will be implemented an innovative technological and constructional solution of energy-saving electric furnaces, worked out in close co-operation with the scientifi c centers of Silesian University of Technology. That will allow to build a highly-effi cient and modern production line with an innovative technology of energy recovery from the post-process gases, allowing to produce apart from silicon metal, clean energy produced partly from a renewable source biomass, without any additional gas or dust emission into the air. Application of innovative technologies and energy-saving equipment allows to decrease the gross energy consumption in the production of high silicon alloys by 20%. Innovativeness Project innovativeness, confi rmed by an application for a patent registered in Polish Patent Offi ce at no. P , is a result of: application in the furnace system, a unit of expansion gas turbine with electric power generator which can use fl owing exhausts or other process gas called thermodynamic factor as a driving power, application compressed air as a workforce factor, fi tting the turbine supplying system with the thermal energy stabilizer, creating optimal combustion conditions for gaseous products of reduction processes which accompanied high percentage silicon alloys melting by controlling the excess of combustion air in whole volume under the furnace hood,

Benefits Patented technology that allows to generate electrical power (OZE) from the waste heat derived from the electric arc-resistance furnaces can be assembled in each plant which has an electric, arc-resistance, arc, heating, reducing or shaft furnaces, that generate hot waste gases, it means that presented solution will fi nd receivers mostly in chemical, ceramic and metallurgical industry. Additional encouragement for implementation of the innovative technology is European Union and Polish law which introduce to the energy market colored certifi cates on energy to support a production in the internal electricity market fabricated from renewable sources green and white certifi - cates. The fi nal target of the undertaking is changing production profi le into solar grades of polycrystalline silicon parallel to a reduction of energy consumption. Increasing demand for polysilicon in the solar cells industry grows 40% annually what creates favorable conditions for the investment and ensuring highly profi table and stable production in the future. Signifi cant is ecological and economic effect of implementation of the innovative solution, which results in the energy effi ciency improvement of the manufacturing process by technology of energy recovery from the post-process gases. Stage of investment implementation Presently company has been fi nishing preparatory stage of investment concerning making technical documentation and obtaining a planning permission. Substantial stage of investment is caring out pilot installation, which will be fi st step before the new solution will be applied in the Chorzow plant, where start of production is planned in Profits and positive effects of implementation of innovativeness Advantageous factors encouraging to implementation of the innovative technical solution: 20% reduction of requirements for electrical power, achieved by recovering waste heat derived from the technical process, the production cost stability achieved by making less dependent production cost from energy cost, chance of the energy effectiveness improvement of production in many different industries, positive infl uence on environment. Comparison with actual stage of technical knowledge The proposed technical solution is original Polish state-of-the-art patentable technology and in the area of energy recovery it will determine new Best Available Technique (BAT) for the energy - intensive sectors. 11

12 COMPLETE KIT OF STATOR VANES OF THE LOW PRESSURE TURBINE FOR THE GEnx-2B ENGINE The winning product of the Polish Product of the Future Competition is a kit of nozzle vanes in the low pressure turbine for GEnx-2B engine. This is a crucial module of the engine which is responsible for propulsion of the compressor and has an impact on the life cycle of the engine and operational safety. Contact person: Wojciech Kade/Offset and State Aid Manager phone fax Thanks to the innovative project of this part of the turbine, which is done by Polish engineers from the company Avio Polska and scientists from Polish universities, the fuel consumption of GEnx-2B will be approx. 15% less in comparison with the engines which are used nowadays. Moreover, at the same time the engine will emit less noise and will be more effi cient. Innovativeness The innovativeness of the nozzle vanes consists in the application of some new parameters for particular types of vanes in the kit where are used the most modern unique solutions of the fi eld of aerodynamics. The changes in arrangement of the nozzle vanes, their shape (including the shape of their edges) and inclination enable to reduce the number of components of the turbine which is connected with the decrease in the engine mass, production cost and increase in operational reliability. New solutions contribute also to the reduction of the fuel consumption compared to the engines which will be replaced by GEnx-2B and it enables the savings of each fl ight. The awarded project is a great progress in the fi eld of aero-propulsion not only in national scale but also all over the world. There has been implemented innovative technologies of processing and new materials which has had a substantial impact on the highest quality achievement and guarantee longer life cycle of the engine. 12

13 Nozzle vanes for a low pressure turbine in GEnx-2B engine Advantages The use of the kit of nozzle vanes in GEnx-2B designed by polish engineers brings some meaningful advantages. Reduction in combustion gases emission to the atmosphere and decrease in the noise emission have been priorities during the design works. This aim has been achieved and the engine can be qualifi ed as the most ecofriendly of the engines constructed so far. The planned production of kit of nozzle vanes in low pressure turbine is going to bring annual receipts of approx. 50 mln PLN during the next decade and will be in whole dedicated for export. The success of Polish engineers from Avio Polska is also a great promotion of Poland as a place worth allocating investments concerning advanced technologies for the foreign investors. The decision that Poland will be the place of production the new product will contribute also to the increase in employment of over 50 new employees in the plant in Bielsko-Biała. 14 BROWN COAL BASED GRANULATED ORGANIC-MINERAL FERTILIZERS The project concerns the production of granulated complete organic-mineral fertilizers. The organic element (min. 50%) is specifi cally activated brown coal containing natural humus substances. The remaining components are mineral substances containing primary and secondary nutrition elements. Complete fertilizers shall assure even distribution of all nutrition elements in plants. 4 types of fertilizers shall be produced within the fi rst phase: the one for conifers, the one for grass, the one for garden fl owers and the one of universal use. Grounds for introduction of new fertilizers lie in pro-ecological cultivation methods that aim at more effi cient use of soil nutrition elements with simultaneous reduced application of mineral fertilizers and plant protection products as well as preservation of agrobiocenoses in natural ecological balance. Innovativeness The new product advantage consists in a bland of mineral and organic components, thanks to which the fertilizer provides plants with nutrition substances essential for proper growth and development as well as improves the soil structure and properties. Granules are homogenous and of high quality. Each one contains all necessary elements. The fertilizers manufacturing technology is also innovative. 14

15 Benefits The fertilizer s impact on soil: improves soil structure, prevents from erosion and washing out nutrition elements, stimulates the growth of useful soil microorganisms, reduces salinity and stabilizes soil reaction, improves water content and availability of nutrition elements, reduces soil and groundwater contamination. The fertilizer s impact on plants: improves effi ciency of water and nutrition elements absorption from soil, improves natural immunity and resistance, enhances faster growth and development of a root system. Using the fertilizer enables: reconstruction of a proper ground structure and reclamation of degraded soil, limited use of mineral fertilizers and other chemicals, pro-ecological cultivation followed by high quality crop. Implementation status The fertilizers manufacturing technological line has been designed, there has been fi eld testing of the fertilizers usability performed. The project started and it is planned to be completed by 31 March The ecological and economic benefi ts from introducing on the Polish market new, cheaper and pro-ecological fertilizers should be emphasized. 15

16 99m Tc-TEKTROTYD PEPTIDE BASED PHARMACEUTICAL KIT FOR ISOTOPE DIAGNOSTICS IN ONCOLOGY The IAE Radioisotope Centre Polatom has developed the pharmaceutical product based on peptide HYNIC-Tyr 3 -octreotide in the novel pharmaceutical form of dry kit for preparation of 99m Tc-Tektrotyd radiopharmaceutical, using the approach, composition, manufacturing and quality control methods developed by the research team of Polatom. Contact person: Renata Mikołajczak, Ph.D. Eng. phone/fax / The peptide (Tyr 3 -octreotide), which is an active substance in this pharmaceutical product was modifi ed by coupling a molecule of hydrazine nicotinic acid (HYNIC), which permits formation of stable complexes with isotope technetium-99 ( 99m Tc-HYNIC-Tyr 3 -octeotide). This peptide is an analogue of naturally occurring regulatory peptide somatostatin and technetium-99m is an isotope emitting gamma-radiation. After intravenous injection, the radiolabelled preparation is taken up at the sites of increased expression of somatostatin receptors and this uptake can be registered in the detecting devices, which visualize the distribution of radiotracer in the patients body Innovativeness In the development of the pharmaceutical product the form of liophilised kit for preparation of 99m Tc labeled radiopharmaceutical was applied. The liophilised kit is delivered to the Nuclear Medicine departments and the ready to use radiopharmaceutical is obtained there by labeling the ingredients of the kit with technetium-99m obtained from 99 Mo / 99m Tc generators, which are widely available in these departments. The labeling procedure is carried out directly prior to patient administration. After intravenous injection, the radiolabelled preparation is taken up at the sites of increased expression of somatostatin receptors and this uptake can be registered in 16

Benefits Starting from the 90-ties the only radiopharmaceutical useful for the diagnostics of GEP-NET tumors is another peptide based radiopharmaceutical, DTPA-octreotide labeled with indium-111( 111 In) (Octreoscan). The main disadvantage of this product is its high cost, resulting mostly from the high production cost of 111 In, which can be only obtained in a cyclotron. It must be imported and its availability is limited due to the rare deliveries. If for various reasons the preparation was not used in the declared time, the radioactivity of 111 In decayed and the radiopharmaceutical became useless. The radiation characteristics of indium-111 is suboptimal. The patient investigation requires a 24-hours protocol, hence patient hospitalization is necessary. Radionuclide generators 99 Mo/ 99m Tc are widely available in nuclear medicine departments and the cost of this isotope is relatively low. The somatostatin analog delivered to the hospital in the form of dry kit and then labeled with 99m Tc allows preparation of radiopharmaceutical directly before its injection to the patient. There is no risk that the radiopharmaceutical is not effi ciently used. The uptake of radiopharmaceutical 99m Tc-Tektrotyd in tumour lesions is visible already at 10 minute after administration and reaches maximum between 2 and 4 h after tracer administration. The examination can be completed within 4 hours after tracer administration. Hospitalization is not required. The radiation characteristics of 99m Tc allows better resolution of images than in case of 111 In, which results in higher number of detected lesions. The particular value of its availability and low cost of about 3-times lower than is case of indium-111 labeled radiopharmaceutical. 99m Tc-Tektrotyd is indicated for diagnostic examinations in case of pathologies, in which the somatostatin receptors are overexpressed (mainly subtype 2 and in a lesser extent in subtype 3 and 5). The radiopharmaceutical is indicated for the diagnostics of gastroentero-pancreatic neuroendocrine tumors GEP-NET. It can be also applicable in case of other tumors expressing somatostatin receptors with various intensity. The 99m Tc-Tektrotyd presents very particular diagnostic value in the detection of the character of pathology, determination the disease extent, the selection of the individual patient therapeutic treatment and further evaluation of progress in therapy, hence it plays a very important role in the management of patients in oncology. 18 STOCHASTICAL IMMUNOLOGICAL LAYER OPTIMIZER (SILO) SILO (Stochastical Immunological Layer Optimizer) is a new immune inspired on-line optimizer of industrial processes. It is an optimization system, with immunity system in the knowledge base management layer. Thanks to SILO, heat and electricity producers can minimize CO, NO X and SO 2 emission and increase generation effi ciency. Eng. /Project Manager phone fax Innovativeness SILO is a completely new approach for industrial process optimization. It is a response for customers needs, that are impossible to fulfi ll by solutions that are based on a priori process model (model predictive control algorithms). This new approach is based on analogy with immune systems of living creatures. Other advanced process control and optimization solutions are based on a big, sophisticated model that is very hard to obtain, maintenance and tune. SILO uses different approach. It gathers portions of knowledge (B cells) about the process and uses selected portions of knowledge to forecast plant behavior in the close neighborhood of current process state. Benefits SILO system performs an on-line optimization of MIMO (Multi Input Multi Output) industrial processes. It is responsible for: maximization of income that is related with output product, minimization of costs which are related with substract costs and penalties for air pollution. In case of combustion process in power boiler SILO increases 18

19 Solution effi ciency Learning and optimization module Time window of a B cell process effi ciency, reduces NO X, CO and SO 2 emissions, reduces LOI (Loss of Ignition) and decrease unit heat rate. SILO can be used to control processes characterized by fast but rare disturbances changes or processes where disturbances change continuously but the rate of changes is signifi cantly slower than dynamics of the process. In industrial plants which fulfi ll above condition, SILO can be also used as FGD (Flue Gas Desulfurization), SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction) and SNCR (Selective NON-Catalytic Reduction) optimizer. SILO also allows to increase plant controllability and decrease unit heat rate. Therefore, costs related to energy generation process itself and to emission limit exceeding, are being reduced. Furthermore, when using SILO, company avoid replacement of entire control system, only improves it which allows for noticeable increase of current infrastructure effi ciency. SILO can be used for minimization of carbon oxide (CO) and nitrogen oxide (NO X ). The oriented economic effects gained by SILO users (results for USA, power plants participating in emission trading obligated to limit the emission in NO X season) for a 450 MW unit are about USD yearly.
