Cloud Less Talk, More Action Find your starting place and take action that makes sense for your organization. Logicalis White Paper: VMware Cloud March 2014

It seems like most of what you hear about the cloud is more talk than action. That isn t the case here. VMware and Logicalis want to help you find your starting place and take action that makes sense for your organization whether it is a cloud solution or a traditional data center approach that is truly going to support your business goals. Get started by learning more about the option that best describes your current situation: Option #1 Cloud, what cloud? Option #2 It s definitely time for the cloud, but how do I get there? Option #3 I m already there, and I want to make the most of it! 2

Option #1 Cloud, what cloud? Feeling like you ve been left behind? You re not alone. There are a few things you can do today to continue supporting the data center you have today while also preparing for the future. Has all of the talk about the cloud got you down? Sometimes it seems like everyone has forgotten there are still more traditional data centers in the world of business today than cloudbased environments. What s more, all of those IT teams have investments in IT infrastructure that will not be depreciate anytime soon. Does this sound like you? Not to worry. Logicalis hasn t forgotten the realities of today s IT environments. Of course, we also know that users and business leaders in your organization are not standing idly by waiting for things to move on their timelines. They are bringing on new applications and new services, many times without giving much thought to where the data lives and what the security protocols are. They are busy moving fast and getting done what needs getting done. So you need a simple way to balance these competing goals depreciation of IT assets, security and governance considerations and users wanting compute, storage and network assets provided now immediately to support their special initiatives. There s no time like the present. There are a few things you can do today to continue supporting the data center you have today while also preparing for the future. 1. Virtualization Plan Ascertain where you are today and identify the low-hanging fruit that will support your goals and help you develop a plan of attack that will make what may seem an insurmountable challenge something that you can conquer in leaps and bounds. 2. Virtualized Environment Management Identify the right tools to support this effort and give you valuable knowledge for utilizing all of the features that will make your IT team proactive IT strategists and not just the folks who get all the calls when things stop working. 3. IT Resource Consumption Consider an IT resource consumption solution that will provide the flexibility, manageability and centralized view that will ensure you make the most of each IT investment you have, regardless of where that resource actually is. 4. Cloud Definition Define what cloud means to you. These four areas will help you take small steps toward a cloud-ready environment and ensure that you are prepared when and if the time comes to move to a cloud computing environment. 3

Option #2 It s definitely time for the cloud, but how do I get there? Cloud Foundation Workshop Logicalis can help you determine your readiness with a Cloud Foundation Workshop. The workshop will provide a high-level view of where you stand today. It includes: A high-level review of the current state of your environment as it relates to cloud readiness A rating of the current state of the functional components required for successful adoption of a cloud-based infrastructure Identification of areas where you can accelerate your ability to implement a cloudbased infrastructure Logicalis Cloud Readiness Assessment When it comes to your mission-critical applications and resources, surprises are not an option. Logicalis Cloud Readiness Assessment gives you the map you need to eliminate any guesswork and fully define what your organization is hoping to accomplish before making a move. It includes: Strategic Plan and IT Roadmap Review IT Maturity ITSM/ITIL Assessment Infrastructure Assessment Application Assessment High-level Cloud Design Everyone is talking about it. Everyone is getting ready. But what does it mean to be ready? How do you really know if you are ready for cloud computing? Many business leaders are still trying to figure out what cloud is. Part of the challenge with the word cloud is that it means so many things. The basis of cloud computing is to make compute, storage, network and/or application resources available on an as-needed basis and only when needed. Ultimately, it doesn t matter if the resources sit in your data center (sometimes referred to as private cloud yet presumes orchestration and a number of other elements beyond a traditional data center are in place) or you use the resources provided by a vendor (aka public cloud, though some call single-company-dedicated resources in a public cloud a private cloud). You may also use these in combination (referred to as hybrid cloud). Clear as mud, right? Cloud computing is more about how the resources are used, allocated, turned on or off and who owns them than about the resources that make up the environment. You end up defining those requirements, just as you always have. Where you get them, how you buy them and how they are actually used will change in practice but not in function. There s no time like the present. There are a few things you can do today to continue supporting the data center you have while moving some aspects of your environment to the cloud. 1. Virtualization Plan Ascertain where you are today. Then identify the low-hanging fruit that will support your goals and help you develop a plan of attack that will make what may seem an insurmountable challenge something you can conquer in leaps and bounds. 4. Application Platform Assess your current legacy application needs as well as future needs. 5. End User Computing Outline a Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) solution that supports your goal of limiting distractions of user issues while ensuring security and your stakeholders goals of getting what they need when, where and how they need it. 6. Logicalis Cloud Foundation Workshop Provides a high-level view of where you stand today. 7. Logicalis Cloud Readiness Assessment Gives you the map you need to eliminate any guesswork and fully define what your organization is hoping to accomplish before you make a move. 4

Option #3 I m already there, and I want to make the most of it! Good news, you re ahead of the game. Are you ready to take cloud to the next level? Key to a truly successful, useful and fully functional cloud environment is being able to manage and control the resources you have available. Cloud computing environments are terrific and the benefits are undeniable, but added complexities come with those benefits. The good news is there are ways to manage cloud environments that won t drive you crazy and will give you and your team time to focus on more important things. So many people think that when you go to the cloud IT is somehow no longer needed to manage the environments and those technology resources somehow magically take care of themselves. Of course, we know there s nothing further from the truth. At the same time, it would be foolish not to make the process of managing your cloud environments as hassle-free and manageable as possible. There are some key areas of ease of management and added benefit that you can take advantage of today. Key to a truly successful, useful and fully functional cloud environment is being able to manage and control the resources you have available. IT management applications can help you do just that. IT consumption solutions will help you further hone the use of all your resources as well. Beyond management, you can use your cloud environment as a very efficient application migration and development platform. Last but not least, cloud can help you make a virtual desktop infrastructure a reality for your organization. Want to learn more about getting more from your cloud environments? Here are just a few things you can do today to continue leading the pack while getting the most from your cloud solutions. 1. Cloud Environment Management Identify the right tools to support this effort and give you valuable knowledge for using all the features that will make your IT team proactive IT strategists and not just the folks who get all the calls when things stop working. 2. IT Resource Consumption Consider an IT resource consumption solution that will provide the flexibility, manageability and centralized view that will ensure you make the most of each IT investment you have, regardless of where that resource actually is. 3. Application Platform Assess your current legacy application needs as well as future needs. 4. End User Computing Outline a Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) solution that supports your goal of limiting distractions of user issues while ensuring security and your stakeholders goals of getting what they need when, where and how they need it. 5

Determining Your Readiness What is the best way to determine your state of readiness? The best place to start is to take stock of where you stand today and devise a picture of where you would like to be tomorrow. Perhaps most obviously, deciding to leverage cloud environments is more of a case-bycase situation than an all-or-nothing proposition. The size of your organization, the industry you are in and the IT demands of your business leaders can all be indicators. Some of your applications and some of your environments may be well-suited for moving into a cloud environment, and others may never really be suited for it. Here are a few things to consider: Why do you want to move to the cloud in the first place? What are you hoping to accomplish by moving any particular aspect of your environment to the cloud? If you don t know what you are trying to accomplish, it will make it difficult to determine if you have succeeded in accomplishing anything once you get there or that you have even arrived at all. Don t do it because someone says it will save you money, make your organization more competitive or make sure IT remains relevant. Actually run the numbers (or get someone to help you run the numbers). Look at all of the options available to you, and than choose the path that is best for your organization. What works for one organization will certainly not necessarily work for another. What departments and/or users within your organization are a good fit for the cloud? Who tends to come looking for resources at a moment s notice? Does R&D ask for sandbox environments that they might need one day, but not next month? Does marketing want to implement campaign portals, but only for the life of a campaign that is, until the next campaign launches, of course? Is HR implementing SaaS-based solutions for payroll and learning management? Are your users utilizing smart phones, tablets and non-it-issued devices to do their day-to-day work more often? All of these could be indicators of a good place to start exploring options. What areas of your environment do you have the best grip on? Essentially, where are you most ready? Environments that are highly virtualized are an obvious place to consider. What applications are particularly well-suited to a move to the cloud? There s a list of considerations as long as companies in the world. The best place to start is to take stock of where you stand today and devise a picture of where you would like to be tomorrow. From there, you will be able to define the steps along the way. An easy way to get started and begin to put things into perspective is a Cloud Foundation Workshop or, for a more in-depth review, a Cloud Readiness Assessment by Logicalis. 7 Cloud Glossary Key terms defined in the NIST Cloud Reference Architecture include: Private Cloud The cloud infrastructure is operated solely for an organization. The cloud may be managed by the organization or a third party and may exist on premise or off premise. Community Cloud The cloud infrastructure is shared by several organizations and supports a specific community that has shared concerns (e.g., mission, security requirements, policy and compliance considerations). The cloud may be managed by the organizations or a third party and may exist on premise or off premise. Public Cloud The cloud infrastructure is made available to the public or a large industry group and is owned by an organization selling cloud services. Hybrid Cloud The cloud infrastructure is a composition of two or more clouds (private, community or public) that remain unique entities but are bound together by standardized or proprietary technology that enables data and application portability (e.g., cloud bursting for load-balancing between clouds). Software as a Service (SaaS) The capability provided to the consumer is to use the provider s applications running on a cloud infrastructure. The applications are accessible from various client devices through a thin client interface such as a web browser (e.g., web-based ). The consumer does not manage or control the underlying cloud infrastructure, including networks, servers, operating systems, storage or even individual application capabilities, with the possible exception of limited user-specific application configuration settings. Platform as a Service (PaaS) The capability provided to the consumer is to deploy onto the cloud infrastructure consumer-created or acquired applications created using programming languages and tools supported by the provider. The consumer does not manage or control the underlying cloud infrastructure, including networks, servers, operating systems or storage, but has control over the deployed applications and possibly application hosting environment configurations. Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) The capability provided to the consumer is to provision processing, storage, networks and other fundamental computing resources where the consumer can deploy and run arbitrary software, which can include operating systems and applications. The consumer does not manage or control the underlying cloud infrastructure but has control over operating systems, storage and deployed applications and possibly limited control of select networking components (e.g., host firewalls). 7
