Choose from Early Childhood, Primary and Secondary teaching. 2. Career opportunities exist in government departments, children s services, family services, education, health, as well as community development and welfare agencies, educational tourist attractions, and support services for families. 3. Teachers are able to motivate and inspire young minds to help their students grow into wellrounded and competent individuals. A world of experiences from a university with a global reputation Our campuses in Cairns and Townsville are in the heart of northern Queensland, adjacent to the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park and the wet and dry Tropics. You will experience our unique and natural wonders. From swimming in warm tropical waters to exploring the ancient Daintree rainforest, JCU provides a World Heritage location unmatched by any other Australian university. Our third main campus is located in Singapore. The campus offers both international and Australian JCU students the opportunity to study in South-East Asia s thriving commercial, technological, financial and academic hub. Many of our students also have the option to study overseas with one of more than 30 JCU exchange partner universities around the world. JCU takes pride in its strong student support network, small class sizes, and well established links with the community. All our courses offer hands-on practical experience to help make you work-ready. These include professional placements, projects and fieldwork. In 2015, the JCU Townsville City campus was opened in the heart of Townsville City, in Flinders Street. The campus provides a unique and progressive blend of teaching and study space, as well as meeting, networking and consultation facilities, where advanced design, technology and ongoing support services on-site all add to the quality of the environment and study experience. Plans are in place for JCU to also have a Cairns City campus providing similar facilities and opportunities as those available at the Townsville City campus. Our campus in central Brisbane, operated by Russo Higher Education, provides quality undergraduate courses to international students on behalf of JCU. JCU Thursday Island opened in 2003 and offers learning facilities for nursing and education students based in the Torres Strait. 5. Being in the company of students helps teachers of any age stay connected to current events, trends and technology. James Cook University is committed to building strong and mutually beneficial partnerships that work towards closing the employment, health and education gap for Australian Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. Professional registration This course is nationally accredited through the Australian Institute for Teaching and School Leadership (AITSL) in association with the Queensland College of Teachers (QCT). Visit: jcu.edu.au/2016/education I love putting the theory I ve learnt at JCU into practice and seeing the enjoyment kids get from being taught. As a male working in the Early Childhood, I want to inspire other men to see this as a career path. At work, I encourage the children to play outdoors, as nature and our tropical environment provide great opportunities for teaching and learning. The theoretical part of JCU s course is offered 100 per cent online. I work full time at the Cairns Early Years Centre, so the flexibility of online study really suits me. Accessing some material via audio-visual lectures has also been excellent. This degree has given me a very solid foundation to continue working in the Early Childhood area when I graduate. 9 Studying to become a secondary school teacher has universal value. I chose JCU because of its reputation. Unlike big universities, the JCU lecturers get to know you, it s easy to make friends and there is a definite family feel between staff and students. I grew up in Normanton, 800 kilometres west of Cairns with a mostly Indigenous population. Eventually I plan to teach in Aboriginal communities, empowering people through education and promoting higher education in rural and remote Australia. First though, I hope to take my skills abroad, experience other countries and perhaps teach there. A highlight of my JCU education has been participating in an Australia-wide sporting competition, the National Indigenous Tertiary Education Student Games, where I met fellow students who are aspiring doctors, lawyers, teachers and artists. This is just one event of many that JCU offers students to help them develop skills and experiences outside their study area.
