A former European City of Culture and currently a UNESCO City of Music, the former industrial powerhouse has blossomed into a major cultural capital attracting 2.3 million visitors per year. With over 64,000 students in higher education in Glasgow (representing nearly 11% of the city s population), life in the city is perfect for students. Despite being Scotland s largest city, Glasgow is fairly compact and easy to explore, particularly from GCU s city centre campus. Culture and heritage Glasgow has an interesting and eventful history. As a major port, Glasgow was once described as being second only to London in the entire British Empire for size and productivity. Adding House, Classical, Celtic and Country to this mix, you ll never struggle to find live music played across the city, including world famous venues like the Barrowlands, the Arches and King Tut s Wah Wah Hut. Shopping and leisure Glasgow is second only to London in the UK for shopping and GCU is situated just a few footsteps away from Glasgow s Style Mile. The city s busy streets are laced with cafés, restaurants, bars and clubs where you can enjoy a multitude of cuisines or chat and dance into the small hours. Sport As Scotland s sporting capital, Glasgow is home to the national stadium as well as the country s two biggest football clubs. In 2014, the city will host the 20th Commonwealth Games, which will also see the opening of the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome the first of its kind in Scotland.
