AAP ACADEMY ADMINISTRATION PRACTICE Research Project Growth Starts With Knowledge Abstracts The following abstracts describe a sampling of projects completed by Hanover Research on behalf of various higher education institutions during September H STREET NW, 2nd FLOOR, WASHINGTON, DC P F
MARKET EVALUATION Diversity Reporting Trends and Practices in Higher Education - Hanover Research presents national trends and practices in the collection of race/ethnicity data, benchmarking, and longitudinal reporting by colleges and universities, in light of new reporting categories mandated by the U.S. Department of Education. Special attention is paid to institutions with significant American Indian or Alaska Native student populations. Demand for Non-Credit Courses - Noncredit courses are offered by colleges and universities to facilitate students personal and professional development. A majority of the time, noncredit courses aim to impart new skills, lead to certifications, or generally improve the student s knowledge of their chosen field. Some institutions also offer noncredit courses in fields more related to personal interests and hobbies, such as photography and cooking. This report intends to examine noncredit courses generally, in terms of their utility to students, as well as looking at the specific courses offered by the college. Secondary Source Overview: Non-Degree Executive Education - Hanover provides an assessment of available secondary information addressing the topic of non-degree executive education. It focuses on the topics of actors in the market, market size, market share, preferences regarding types of classes, and methods of offering classes. This document will help the University s School of Management determine the utility of proceeding with an in-depth secondary research effort on this topic. Higher Education Compliance Consultants - In this report, Hanover looks at a variety of organizations that assist colleges and universities in identifying any potential risk and compliance issues related to regulatory requirements. The businesses profiled comprise both local and national firms, and include consulting, legal, and accounting firms, as well as other specialist companies. This resource will help the University in choosing a firm capable of assisting in its compliance with a variety of regulations related to the Higher Education Act (HEA), the Higher Education Opportunity Act (HEOA), and the Clery Act. Program Demand for Three-Year Master s of Architecture Degree - This report examines the market for three-year Master s of Architecture (M.Arch) degrees in the United States and New England. More specifically, this report focuses on programs designed for students whose undergraduate degrees are not accredited by the National Architectural Accrediting Board (NAAB). Our aim is to assist the Institute of Technology in determining if a new M.Arch program should be developed, and it also provides examples of how to structure a three-year M.Arch program. Online Master s Programs in Law - In this report, Hanover provides a general overview of online master s-level legal programs offered by city area law schools, with a specific focus on programs not requiring a prior professional degree (J.D.) for admission. A brief overview of recent trends in online legal education is also provided Hanover Research 2
Labor Market Analysis: Statewide and Regional Trends - Hanover investigates state-wide and city metropolitan labor market trends to identify high-demand and high-growth occupations. Specifically, we analyze occupations for which a bachelor s degree is required, with the aim of determining whether high-demand and high-growth occupations correspond with popular and high-growth majors in the state. A Shift Towards 120-Credit Degrees - In this report, Hanover provides context for the shift among many institutions, states, and university systems to cap the number of credits required for a bachelor s degree at 120 credits. We provide an overview of trends in other states and conclude with a list of institutions that have made the shift. Print Solutions at Canadian Institutions - This report presents information on copier fleet brands and print management systems used in colleges and universities in the Canadian province. Whenever possible, these findings also identify the vendor for the implementation and support of print software solutions, if known. These findings will help the University compare its own print equipment and systems with those used at other Canadian colleges and universities. Market Analysis for Professional Master s Degree Programs - Hanover analyzes the market for professional master s degrees, focusing specifically on Professional Science Master s (PSM) degree programs, in line with the college s proposed program focus. We provide an overview of literature, an analysis of recent completions trends, and an examination of relevant occupational projections. We also include an inventory of potential regional competitor programs and online programs, as well as an analysis of employer responses to a survey administered by Hanover. Program Demand: Entry-Level Master of Science in Nursing - In this report, Hanover analyzes the potential market for an Entry-Level Master of Science in Nursing program at the college. The report examines potential student demand for these degrees, presents regional and national employment projections for registered nurses, and profiles relevant on-campus and online entry-level master s programs. Market Analysis for Master s-level Theology Programs - In order to aid the University in assessing the viability of graduate degrees in theology, this report provides an analysis of the market for master s-level theology degrees, excluding the M.Div. We examine conferral trends, identify potential competitors, and offer an overview of key program features, including curricular structure, required coursework, delivery format, and tuition costs. Market Analysis for the School of Arts - This report analyzes the demand for programs in the areas of theatre, international business and languages, arts management, and writing. We first review enrollment trends and factors influencing enrollment decisions for these fields. Then we examine the labor market outlook for recent graduates in these areas. Finally, we profile the structure and practices of similar programs at other Australian institutions Hanover Research 3
QUANTITATIVE & QUALITATIVE ANALYSIS An Economic Impact Analysis of Gaps in Black-White Male Earnings and Employment (Update) - In a previous report, Hanover Research presented the University with an analysis of the economic impacts associated with the earnings gap between Black and White males. In this report, we incorporate our findings regarding the earnings gap into a wider discussion that includes an analysis of the economic impact of the employment gap between Black and White males. Factors Contributing to Student Success - In this report, Hanover identifies factors that predict retention and graduation at the University. We examine the relationship between key success rates and factors including student test scores, grant aid, gender, ethnicity, declared university unit, athletic participation, high school of origin, and region of origin. The purpose of this study is to provide the University with a profile of students that tend to succeed and those who tend not to succeed. Review of Faculty Survey Proposal and Data Methodology - In the following document, Hanover critiques a survey instrument designed by a faculty member at the University to obtain information on the use of cell phones by registered nurses while administering chemotherapy. Apart from suggesting additional items for inclusion in the questionnaire, we address crucial issues related to the size and the nature of the sample likely obtained through voluntary online participation. In the process, we indicate several strategies to overcome any potential sources of bias. Then, we discuss methods of testing individual questions for internal consistency and describe common statistical approaches to analyzing and interpreting survey results. Businessweek Undergraduate Rankings Analysis - This report examines the College of Business position in the Businessweek undergraduate business school rankings. We start by analyzing the strengths and weaknesses of the business school as identified by the rankings. In the final section, we analyze projected changes in this ranking in simulated scenarios involving increases in each of the variables included in the model. Summary of Open-Ended Responses to 2012 FTFY and FTEX MBA Surveys - Hanover presents a series of charts and tables summarizing open-ended responses to the 2012 FTFY (full-time first year) and FTEX (full-time exiting) MBA student surveys. The responses were coded according to categories used in past years for the FTEX and FTFY surveys, or, lacking these specified categories, developed by Hanover Research based on frequently repeated topics Hanover Research 4
SURVEYING Mathematics Department Questionnaire Results - This report summarizes the results of a questionnaire administered to the institution s alumni deigned to gather feedback about the Mathematics Department and curriculum. The survey was administered between May and June of The results examined in this report are based on the responses of 185 alumni who provided completed or partial responses to the online questionnaire. Analysis: Exit Survey - In this report, Hanover analyzes the results of a survey administered to former University students who left before completing their degree. In this survey, respondents were asked about their motivations for enrolling at the University, their reasons for leaving early, and their suggestions for improving the University. College of Business Administration Alumni Survey - The following report presents an analysis of a survey administered to alumni of the University s College of Business Administration. The survey was designed and administered by Hanover Research in order to achieve multiple objectives. First, portions of this survey were designed to gather information related to the Princeton Review s Top Entrepreneurial Colleges and Business Programs rankings. Furthermore, the survey was designed to obtain information pertinent to the University s program evaluation efforts, such as alumni impressions of their degree program and suggestions for potential improvements in the College of Business Administration. State Community College Course Evaluation Systems - In this report, we present the findings of primary research conducted at peer institutions of the community college. To collect information on the process in which peer institutions conduct course evaluations, Hanover contacted representatives at departments responsible for course evaluations, such as Academic Affairs and Institutional Research, at each peer institution. We were successfully able to interview representatives from four peer institutions to detail the course evaluations practices at the peer institution. MBA Alumni Survey Results - This report presents the results of a survey of the alumni of the Institution s Executive MBA Program. The respondents were asked questions about their experience in the program, as well as for their opinions about possible improvements for a new stand-alone University MBA Program for Executives. BENCHMARKING Benchmarking Internal and External Funding at Research Institutions - This report seeks to understand how research universities, and particularly peer institutions of the University, define and manage internal and external funding for faculty research. For each institution profiled, the report attempts to distinguish between internal funding opportunities and external funding sources promoted by the Office of Research or relevant administrative department Hanover Research 5
Tuition Waiver and Remission Benchmarking - In this report, Hanover documents the tuition waiver and remission policies at 12 peer institutions of the University. This report is accompanied by a spreadsheet summarizing these policies. This report is intended to provide the University with a competitive benchmark as it evaluates its current tuition remission and waiver policies. Service Unit Costs Benchmarking - In this benchmarking report, Hanover presents findings from a survey administered to 18 institutions in the state and surrounding states. We compare costs associated with several non-academic departments of these institutions. The departments are divided into five groups: Administrative Services, Student Services, Facilities Maintenance, Libraries, and Research. Tuition and Fees at Midwestern Postsecondary Institutions - Hanover profiles the structure of undergraduate tuition costs at selected public institutions in the state and other Midwestern states. The report includes information on tuition pricing and fees by residency status, academic discipline, course delivery format, student groups, and other relevant characteristics. LITERATURE REVIEW Selecting a Data Warehouse Solution for a Two-Year College: Best Practices - In this report, Hanover Research investigates and identifies best practices in higher education data warehousing solutions in order to aid the college in choosing its own preferred DWS (data warehouse solution). The report features a discussion of the evolving nature of data warehousing, followed by a discussion of things to consider when designing and implementing a new data warehouse. The report ends with profiles of vendors and products, which include reporting tools. Special attention will be paid to specific factors when profiling the vendor solutions, including a comparison of features offered by each, a breakdown of operational pros and cons and potential return on investment analyses. Research to Orient Faculty Grading - This report reviews research and best practices in faculty grading at institutions of higher education in America, with an emphasis on grade inflation and its relationship to tenure status and student evaluations. This research will assist the University in better contextualizing and orienting faculty grading. Summer Bridge Programs - In this report, Hanover investigates best practices in summer bridge programs. The first section reviews the available literature on best practices in provisional admissions programs and identifies the components of summer bridge programs that have the most positive impact on participants. The second section provides benchmarking information on summer bridge programs at seven universities and one university system. In the programs profiled, participants must successfully complete the summer bridge program in order to gain full admission to the institution. Finally, the report concludes with brief snapshots of several summer bridge programs offered as an optional head start to higher education, instead of through provisional admissions Hanover Research 6
Best Practices in Campus Expansion - Hanover presents strategies for the expansion of the college s institutional reach through domestic and international branch campuses and study abroad sites, international research partnerships, consortia with peer institutions, attracting military students in the state, and service learning programs and courses. Additionally, this report provides information on fellow institutions in the state with programs that focus on the American Southwest. Best Practices in ABLE-College Data Sharing - In this report, Hanover provides the community college with an overview of promising practices in ABLE-college partnerships. Through primary and secondary research, we examine data sharing guidelines and strategies for aligning ABLE programming with developmental education curricula. The findings of our report are intended to provide guidance to the community college s administrators and ABLE staff as the college and its partnering ABLE program seek strategies to increase student success through a more effective use of data. Supporting Student Athlete Academic Success - This report reviews best practices in providing academic support services to student athletes. The report begins with best practices information pertaining to student athlete support, followed by five case profiles illustrating the use of such practices at institutions whose student athletes have been nationally recognized for their academic achievement Hanover Research 7
