WINTER INSURANCE GUIDE What you need to know to be prepared and covered

Many of us look forward to that first snowfall winter brings, the pretty snowflakes falling down onto a wintery, white wonderland. For those of us in the Northeast, Mid-Atlantic and Midwest, the feeling fades quickly as we begin to remember the past several winters. The severe weather of the past few years has shown us how the snow, ice, sleet and freezing temperatures of the winter season can wreak havoc on our homes, cars and property. Ice dams, slick roads, frozen pipes and other wintery perils aren t just dangerous they re expensive, too. Last winter s severe weather caused $3.2 billion in insured losses across the U.S., according to the Insurance Information Institute.1 If you or your family were to experience one of these perils this winter, you could be on the hook for hundreds, even thousands, of dollars if you re unprepared, uninsured or underinsured. It has been a lovely and mild fall, and now is the perfect time to take steps to prepare for the effects of winter weather. The Farmer s Almanac predicts yet another freezing and snowy winter. Make sure you and your family are prepared this guide can help you quickly and efficiently winterize your property and ensure it is adequately protected against the winter damages you may face. 1. Wilkinson, Claire. U.S. Winter Storm Losses Mount. The Insurance Information Institute. July 12, <

YOUR HOME As the days shorten and the temperatures drop, make sure you take the time before winter hits to get your home and your homeowners insurance policy ready before it s too late. For many families, your home is your biggest investment, isn t that worth protecting? Preparation is your best defense against winter weather. The checklists attached will help you protect your home from those damages by preparing the exterior and interior of your home for winter conditions and by arming you with the right questions to ask to ensure you have the right insurance coverage to protect your home. USAA Property and Casualty reported receiving a record number of homeowners claims last winter in states ranging from Georgia to New York and Massachusetts, with ice dams being the leading culprit for damage2. With another winter on its way, make sure you re ready. 2. Winter Buries Northeast in Snow, USAA in Record Number of Claims. USAA. 4 WINTER CHECKLIST PREPARE YOUR HOME EXTERIOR Check roofing for damage and make necessary repairs Trim back any overhanging branches near your home Clean out gutters, debris can cause leaks and ice dams Secure gutters, snow and ice can get heavy and strain the structure Ensure gutters drain at least 4 feet away from your home to prevent flooding Shut off and drain exterior faucets and sprinkler systems Remove and store any attached hoses Clean and cover air conditioner condensing unit BASEMENT Test sump pump Have a licensed technician inspect furnace or boiler before the cold weather starts Check for exposed pipes or ducts and insulate them Check pipes for leaks to avoid frozen pipes, slow leaks can be considered poor maintenance Test generator and get it looked at by a professional if it is difficult or slow to start INTERIOR Make sure smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors are in working order Replace screens with storm windows and doors Touch up insulation around windows / doors as necessary Remove air conditioners from windows Test heating system to ensure it is working properly before temperatures drop Switch ceiling fans to reverse to move warm air down and heat your home more efficiently Keep your home at a minimum of 65 F to help keep exterior pipes warm Clean chimney and check for any necessary repairs ATTIC Check for exposed pipes or ducts and insulate them Check for and seal any gaps in the insulation Add extra insulation this is one of your best defenses against ice dams Consider consulting a contractor if your home is at risk for ice dams Check pipes for leaks GARAGE Ensure you have the necessary supplies shovels, salt, sand, etc. in stock Make sure all snow removal machinery and gear is in working order and easily accessible INSURAMATCH.COM

WINTER CHECKLIST PROTECT YOUR HOME EXISTING COVERAGE Update your home inventory and ensure your limits are still appropriate, just in case you face damage due to winter weather Call your agent to better understand what s covered when it comes to ice dams and other winter damages and if any preventative measures, like snow removal, may be covered Check your homeowners policy to see if you have enough coverage for expensive winter sports equipment, like skis, and make sure there are no special limits or exclusions on those items both at home and away from home, if you will be traveling with them LIABILITY Check your town s snow removal policy to ensure you will be clearing all areas necessary to protect your liability this winter POTENTIAL GAPS IN COVERAGE Ask your agent if there are any programs or discounts available that will help lower your home s exposure to certain winter-related risks, like ice dams Check on any exclusions in your policy that you may encounter over the winter, like flooding, and talk with your agent about coverage options Ensure any additional winter gear, such as a snowmobile or snow plow blade, have proper insurance coverage, as they are not usually covered under auto or homeowners insurance Make sure you have enough coverage for winter weather. 6 ICE DAMS Ice dams form when heat from your home warms your roof, but not the eaves. The melting snow freezes over again at the edge of your roof creating a ridge. This creates a backup of water on your roof with nowhere to go but into your home. Damage from ice dams can be very costly. The best fix is preventing ice dams from occurring in the first place. Keeping your attic cool during the winter months is paramount to preventing ice dams. Examine your attic to ensure it is well ventilated and insulated, and be sure to check for any leaks in the insulation that may have appeared over the warmer months. It may be well worth calling a professional contractor to survey your attic and outfit it with the necessary measures to protect your home. Installing a fan system or exterior heated cables are some of the ways to combat ice dams. Consider calling your insurance agent to see if there are any preventative programs you may have access to through your policy. You should also confirm that you have enough coverage under your policy in the event of damages caused by an ice dam. Don t think it could happen to your home? Ice dams were among the top claims of winter 2015.

YOUR CAR During the winter months, it s more important than ever that your car is in good condition. Winterizing your vehicle is essential to keeping it running correctly through the winter months as well as keeping you and your passengers safe. Winter temperatures are hard on your car s mechanics and wintery conditions can put your driving skills to the test. Before the snow starts falling, use this winter checklist as a guide to prepare and protect your car this winter. The checklist outlines the steps you or an auto mechanic should take to ensure your car is properly outfitted and prepared for winter driving and can help you identify areas where you may want to consider more or different coverage for your car insurance.

WINTER CHECKLIST PREPARE & PROTECT YOUR CAR PREPARE Consider a tune-up, even if you re not due for one, as cold weather can wreak havoc on your engine Check brakes Check batteries and charger, cold temperatures are hard on batteries Test heater and defroster Add antifreeze as needed Change wiper fluid to a winter solution Test windshield wipers and consider replacing them with wipers designed for winter conditions Change your oil, if needed, to a lower viscosity oil for colder temperatures Check tire tread, depth and pressure Consider snow tires Test four-wheel drive to ensure it is working properly, if you have it Wash and wax vehicle to help protect the exterior from corrosive road salt Stock trunk with winter weather essentials an ice scraper, shovel and jumper cables Create an emergency kit for your vehicle that includes a flashlight, water, blankets, cell phone charger and a first aid kit PROTECT Speak with your agent to ensure you have enough liability coverage for the risks of winter driving Consider comprehensive coverage to help cover damages that may result from storms, like falling tree limbs or ice Ensure any additional winter gear, such as a snow plow blade, has proper insurance coverage, as plows may require a commercial auto policy Make sure you have enough coverage for winter weather. Call today for free insurance advice INSURAMATCH.COM

SNOW TIRES When driving on snow and ice, traction is necessary to keep your wheels moving and you and your passengers safe. Snow tires are developed specifically to have better traction and grip than all-weather tires in wintery conditions, thanks to cold weather rubber compounds, channeling tread patterns, high Sipes density, and an open tread block pattern. With snow tires, you ll have a longer braking distance and more controlled acceleration, which can help reduce weather-related accidents. As with normal tires, be sure to check your tire pressure often, especially in colder months. Though snow tires present an additional cost, they will extend the life of your regular tires and may be cheaper than your insurance deductible, should your regular tires fail to keep you safe. If you choose to use snow tires during the winter months, be sure to replace all of your tires with snow tires to maintain equal traction on all sides of the vehicle for better handling in winter conditions. Though snow tires make it safer to drive in wintery conditions, if it is a winter storm - stay home! Limit your driving activity during snowstorms and only venture out if necessary. Save non-essential tasks for a day when weather conditions are safer for driving.
