1 VIRGINIA DEPARTMENT OF CRIMINAL JUSTICE SERVICES (DCJS) COURSES The term anyone means someone who is qualified to work in indicated field. Felony criminal records may prohibit licensure by DCJS. Individuals under 18 cannot apply. Check with DCJS at eligibility details. Answers to questions regarding eligibility or DCJS regulations related to other private security regulations may be found at or by calling DCJS at All course numbers and titles are assigned by DCJS. Course numbers are followed by a capital letter. The letters mean the following: E Entry Level: All course numbers ending with an E must be successfully completed before enrollment in courses whose course number ends in I or R see below; I In-service: These courses are for professionals who have successfully completed the applicable Entry Level (E) courses; and R Re-training: These courses are not considered In-service training. Retraining courses essentially are re-qualification courses required to maintain applicable continuing DCJS firearm endorsement. Entry Level 01E Security Officer Core Subjects 18 Hours $75 Required by DCJS for anyone wanting to be an unarmed Security Officer. The course covers basic and specialty information needed to perform in the field. Test follows completion of course. Bring pen, notepaper and 02E Private Investigator (PI) 60 Hours $360 Required by DCJS for anyone wanting to perform investigations in Virginia. The course addresses the basics of PI work such as: criminal and civil law; report writing; interviewing; surveillance; research; computer and background checks, etc. The first night of class is from 6:00PM-10:00PM. Dates and times for the remaining 56 hours will be determined by students. (Training must be completed within 30 days of the first four-hour evening session.) The course includes numerous exercises including surveillance of graduate PI s, opportunities to challenge experienced persons, etc. A workbook is included in the cost of the class, plus an ASG assisted job search. Bring pen, notepaper and 04E Canine Handler Not currently offered check back later 05E Armed Security Officer Arrest Authority 8 Hours $60 Required by DCJS for anyone wanting to be a Security Officer with arrest authority. Bring handcuffs if you have them. NO HANDGUNS. Wear clothing you can be comfortable in on the floor/ground. Bring pen, notepaper and 06E Unarmed Special Conservator of the Peace (SCOP) 24 Hours $225 Required by DCJS for anyone wanting to be a SCOP. Students will learn the core subjects and specialty information necessary to successfully work as a SCOP. (This is an unarmed course. To be armed students 1
2 also will need to also complete 07E.) Topics include: criminal and civil law; report writing; Virginia Uniform Summons writing; arrest procedures; handling juveniles; etc. Bring pen, notepaper and 07E Firearm 14 Hours $120* Required by DCJS for anyone wanting to be an armed private security officer in Virginia. Topics include: when to shoot; when not to shoot; criminal and civil ramifications; handgun fundamentals; shooting fundamentals; crime scenes and reports; etc. ASG emphasizes SAFETY while teaching the student about revolvers and semi-automatics; shooting with one and two hands; the type of weapon best suited for you; etc. Course cost includes a workbook for students to keep to assist in developing their skills. Bring pen, notepaper, highlighter and handgun (if you have one). NO AMMO & NO LOADED WEAPONS IN CLASS! *Range fees are not included in course cost. 08E Shotgun 2 Hours $60* Required by DCJS for anyone wanting to be a shotgun-armed private security officer in Virginia. The two hour class plus range qualification time covers the basics of shotgun nomenclature; use of force; cleaning, carrying, and retaining techniques; etc. Bring pen, notepaper, highlighter and shotgun (if have one). NO AMMO & NO LOADED WEAPONS IN CLASSROOM! *Range fees are not included in course cost. 09E Advanced Handgun (pre-requisite: completion of Course 07E) 24 Hours $125* Required by DCJS for anyone wanting to be a Personal Protection Specialist (see Course 32E, below) personnel and for anyone wanting to improve their handgun skills. Course topics include specialized techniques as well as the basics. Lasers are used during training but are not required for qualification. A workbook is included in the cost of the class. Bring pen, notepaper, highlighter and handgun (if you have one). NO AMMO & NO LOADED WEAPONS IN CLASS! *Range fees are not included in course cost. 18E 25E Patrol Rifle Not currently offered check back later Locksmith Not currently offered check back later 30E Electronic Security Core Subjects 4 Hours $50 Required by DCJS for anyone having access to electronic security systems, controls, wiring, equipment, etc. For additional DCJS requirements see: Bring pen, notepaper and The 30E: Electronic Security Core Subjects are included in 35E and 39E the materials and costs. Therefore, students enrolling in 35E and/or 39E do not need to enroll in 30E. 32E Personal Protection Specialist (PPS) 60 Hours $1,000* Required by DCJS for anyone wanting to be a body guard in Virginia. The course covers law, ethics, 2
3 responsibilities, protective detail scenarios and specialized techniques for the professional body guard. Students should be able to demonstrate the ability to think and act quickly. Course cost includes a workbook for students. Bring pen, notepaper and *Cost is $1,000 for pre-enrollment or $1,200 at class start date. 35E Electronic Security Technician 14 Hours $220 Required by DCJS for anyone wanting to be an Electronic Security Technician, e. g., anyone who desires to install or maintain security type equipment such as doors; alarms systems; and camera s. This course includes Course 30E: Electronic Security Core Subjects. Course cost includes a workbook for students. Bring pen, notepaper and 39E Electronic Security Sales Representative 8 Hours $135 Required by DCJS for anyone desiring to sell security type equipment such as burglar alarms, security cameras, IP based systems, etc. This course includes Course 30E: Electronic Security Core Subjects. Course cost includes a workbook for students. Bring pen, notepaper and 40E 44E Bail Bondsman Not currently offered check back later Bail Enforcement Not currently offered check back later Campus Security Officer (CSO) 16 Hours $ Virginia Campus Security Officer Certification Training is intended for college and university campus security personnel, and includes private security personnel serving in a campus security function. Campus Security Officer means any person employed by or contracted to a college or university for the sole purpose of maintaining peace and order and who is primarily responsible for ensuring the safety, security, and welfare of students, faculty, staff, and visitors. Certified law enforcement officers as defined in: Â are not included in this definition. For exceptions, please call ASG ( ) or see This course consists of four modules of content, including but not limited to the role and responsibility of CSOs; relevant state and federal laws; school and personal liability issues; security awareness in the campus environment; mediation and conflict resolution; disaster and emergency response; and behavioral dynamics. ASG Online In-Service Training ASG COURSES ASG01 Responding to Environmental Emergencies 3 Hours call ASG for $$ Training in how to respond to environmental emergencies like hurricanes, earthquakes, fires, etc. This curriculum has been approved by Virginia s Department of Emergency Management. Trainees receive a manual to accompany this training. ASG02 Customer Service, Human Relations and Non-verbal Communications (All ASG02 modules require trainees to be prepared and willing to participate in small group exercises.) ASG02-A Introduction to Nonverbal Communications For Customer Relations and Human Interactions 2 Hours call ASG Module A introduces trainees to the nonverbal behaviors (body language and paralanguage) integral to every human interaction. This training is aimed at helping security officers identify their specific role (e. g., safety officer, mediator, protector) in an interaction, to become of aware of how their nonverbal behavior affects communication, to observe the nonverbal behavior of others and to recognize the factors that affect human interactions. Trainees receive a manual to accompany this training. ASG02-B Sensory Acuity and Rapport Building 2 Hours call ASG Module B builds on the concepts learned in Module A. This module emphasizes the development of observation and sensory acuity skills to recognize the nonverbal behaviors and paralanguage that are common to basic emotional states, i. e., hostility/anger, fear, happiness, sadness. ASG02-B also introduces trainees to the basic techniques of rapport building and the relationship between sensory acuity and rapport. Satisfactory completion of Module ASG02-A is a pre-requisite for participation in Module B. ASG COURSES, continued 5
6 ASG02-C Us of Language to Guide Behavior 2 Hours call ASG Module C teaches trainees how to use embedded language to guide or manage behavior once rapport has been established. This module stresses the importance of respectful and responsible use of the various techniques that are taught. Satisfactory completion of Modules ASG02-A and ASG02-B is a pre-requisite for participation in Module C. ASG02-D Managing Personal Behavior 2 Hours call ASG for $$ Module D teaches trainees how to monitor, manage and edit their own behavior during emotionally charged interactions. Satisfactory completion of Modules ASG02-A, ASG02-B and ASG02-C is a prerequisite for participation in Module D. ASG02-E Eliciting Desired Behaviors 2 Hours call ASG for $$ Module E teaches trainees how to quickly define desired behavioral outcomes and then use skills learned in Modules A-D to achieve those outcomes. Satisfactory completion of Modules ASG02-A, ASG02-B, ASG02-D and ASG02-D is a pre-requisite for participation in Module E. ASG03 Behavior Observation and Reporting 2 Hours call ASG for $$ A two-hour curriculum that teaches trainees the elements of objective observation and objective reporting. Trainees receive a manual to accompany this training. ASG04 Cultural Awareness 2 Hours call ASG for $$ This curriculum introduces trainees to cultural differences and how these differences affect interactions. A large portion of this course focuses on training students in behavior observation to help them be behaviorally respectful of diverse cultures and in how to avoid exhibiting behaviors that might be perceived by other cultures as offensive, aggressive, disrespectful, etc. ASG05 Advanced Investigative Techniques This course, open to Registered P.I. s, consists of ASG s online web searches. ASG06 Advanced Counter Surveillance and Threat Analysis This course is for members of the intelligence communities. ASG07 Basic Report Writing with Summons Forms This course is for Registered Armed and SCOP officers. ASG08 Basic First Aid/CPR/AED This course is offered monthly and is open to the general public. 6
