Bhika, CPA, MS Office Telephone: (718) Office Hours: Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays: 1:00 PM - 2:00 PM Other times by appointment Room B327-W Welcome to BTA202 - Intermediate Accounting II BTA202: Intermediate Accounting II is the capstone course for the Accounting Program. The word capstone refers to one of the final or finishing stones on the top of a wall or building. Thus, a capstone course represents the finishing touch or completion of your academic work at a college. Specifically, this capstone course will complete your studies here at LaGuardia Community College in the following ways: It will allow you to review the basic accounting skills you have gained from work done in previous accounting courses, and expand on them with a more sophisticated analysis and discussion of financial statements. It will allow you to look back at your work in other courses you have taken at LaGuardia (not just accounting), and reflect on the common skills and knowledge you have gained from these courses. It will enable you to look forward and create an action plan to confront the challenges and opportunities (i.e., transfer, job/career search, etc.) that will arise upon your graduation. In particular, the course will include a detailed examination of the company s balance sheet, including assets such as Inventories, Fixed Assets, Natural Resources, Intangible Assets, and Investments in Securities, as well as Short and Longterm Liabilities. As different accounting concepts are discussed in class, you will be asked to analyze the financial statements of real-life companies to ascertain the application of these accounting principles. The result of your analysis will be a staged term research paper due towards the end of the semester in which you examine the decisions made by a company s management regarding application of accounting principles. In addition, you will make a video-taped oral presentation in which you will provide a synopsis of your term research paper. The goal is to enhance critical thinking, investigate perspectives, and explore reasoning and communication of concepts that affect the validity and persuasiveness of arguments, while encouraging you to think logically about both the theory and the practice of accounting and business. Essentially, class sessions will supplement and structure the process of research, developing arguments, use of technology (i.e., eportfolio, Microsoft Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Yahoo!Finance, etc.), and presenting results. In conjunction with the Intermediate Accounting II Studio Hour (REG ), the role of eportfolio in this course will serve as a medium for integration, reflection, transition, and culmination ( 2012) as you try to unify your diverse learning experiences and prepare to further your academic and professional careers.

4 Term Research Paper: Working in pairs, you will be required to complete a term research paper. The Term Research Paper will focus on the topic of Ethnicity, Culture, and Business. By the end of this assignment, you should be able to: 1. Define the terms business, profit, ethnicity, culture, and diversity. 2. Analyze the importance of a company considering the ethnic and cultural diversity of the people in a foreign country before engaging in international business activities. 3. Analyze the accounting, marketing, and legal ramifications of a company considering the ethnic and cultural diversity of the people in a foreign country before engaging in international business activities. 4. Understand the profound impact of the ethnic and cultural diversity of the people in their neighborhood on how local businesses operate (i.e., products/service provided, modes of advertisement, employees and communication, etc.). eportfolio Development: You will be required to create and complete a professional Capstone eportfolio in order to receive a grade for this course - See REG : Intermediate Accounting II Studio Hour Syllabus for more information on this course requirement. Grading System The course is assigned 100% as follows: Examination # 1 10% Examination # 2 20% Final Examination 30% Term Research Paper 15% In-Class Writing Assignments 5% eportfolio Quality 10% Participation: Overall evaluation of student based on timeliness of in-class and homework assignments, class participation, etc. 10% 100% Effective Fall 1999, LaGuardia Community College has adopted a plus and minus grading system. LaGuardia Community College will not utilize the A+ within the grading system. Students Overall Course Grade will be calculated as follows: Overall Course Grade = (Examination # 1 Grade * 10%) + (Examination # 2 Grade * 20%) + (Final Examination Grade * 30%) + Term Research Paper Grade (0% - 15%) + In-Class Writing Assignments (0% - 5%) + eportfolio Quality Grade (0% - 10%) + Participation Grade (0% - 10%) 4

As noted above, there will be three examinations during the semester (Examination # 1, Examination # 2, and Final Examination). The Final Examination will be cumulative. 2. The instructor will provide more detailed information about the Term Research Paper during classroom meetings. 3. Key terms, problems, discussion and review questions, case studies, etc., at the end of each the chapters will be assigned by the instructor. 4. As the semester progresses, the instructor will provide information and due dates relating to the following: a. Homework Assignments b. In-Class Assignments c. Examinations d. Term Research Paper e. eportfolio Attendance Policy: Attendance in class is a requirement and will be considered in the evaluation of student performance. Instructors are required to keep an official record of student attendance. The maximum number of unexcused absences is limited to 15% of the number of class hours. In the unfortunate event that you miss a class, it is your responsibility to: 1. Make yourself aware of the materials and/or activities during the class. 2. Be well prepared for the next class. Absences are counted from the first day of class even if they are a result of late registration or change of program. Furthermore, you CANNOT make up a missed exam or turn in a missed assignment/project, etc., unless your absence is approved by the instructor PRIOR to the class. Pre-approved absences will be considered only in VERY LIMITED SITUATION, such as, but not limited to the following: 5

6 1. You have a college/university approved excuse in writing. 2. Emergency situations (i.e., illness, family emergency, court order, etc.) ONLY WITH appropriate written evidence (i.e., a doctor s note, printed announcement or relevant official document, etc. No travel itinerary alone, please). Class Participation You are responsible to keep current in the reading, in-class and homework assignments, and contribute significantly to class discussions. Mere attendance at class does not count towards participation. The quality of your participation will be evaluated on the basis of the instructor s assessment of your comprehension of the material and your ability to articulate and support your analysis. Plagiarism CUNY takes plagiarism very seriously. You are expected to understand what are the implications of plagiarism. Plagiarism occurs when you submit someone else s ideas or words as your own. If you commit an act of academic dishonesty in this course by either plagiarizing someone s work or allowing your own work to be misused by another, you will received a Grade of F for that assignment and possibly fail the entire course. In addition, I will report the incident by filling out an Academic Integrity Complaint Form, which will be on file with the College s Academic Standing Committee. All personal electronic devices (i.e., ipods, cellular phones, palm pilots, personal computers, CD players, etc.) MUST BE COMPLETELY TURNED OFF AND PUT AWAY while in class, unless permitted by the instructor. They interrupt the class and distract the others. 2. NO food or snacks. If you need to bring a beverage into the classroom, the container will need to be secured with a lid or other means to prevent spilling. Together, it is our responsibility to maintain a physical environment that is pleasant. 3. Blackboard and s will be used as the primary modes of communication for class. You are expected to maintain your LaGuardia account. Class announcements and relevant materials will be posted on the course Blackboard site at 4. You are expected to be prompt and prepared to stay until the instructor dismisses the class. Any deviations (i.e., being late or leaving early) without the consent of the instructor may be considered as an absence. Both PUNCTUALITY and ATTENDANCE are critical to maximize your performance in this course. 5. LISTEN AND PARTICIPATE. However, side conversations or other distractions to the speaker or fellow students are inappropriate and will not be tolerated. 6. All foreign materials not related to the class should be put away (i.e., newspapers, magazines, and materials related to other classes). 7. When guest lecturers/speakers are scheduled, professional or business casual attire as well as timeliness are required of all so as to deliver and maintain a PROFESSIONAL ATTITUDE. Business casual means collar shirt and slacks or blouse and skirt. No baseball caps, sweats, jeans, and shorts, please. Note: The instructor reserves the right to change any or all of the above-noted items at his discretion. However, students will be informed and involved prior to any such changes. 6
