Avid speaking with the media. 7. Refrain frm cntacting the student s/faculty s emergency cntacts until yu have spken with a staff frm CC. Tgether yu will decide n the best way frward. 8. If the situatin is between a CC student and an utside party, actins will depend upn the laws f the hst cuntry and desires f the victim. CC n-campus staff will cntact CC general cunsel fr advice. 9. If the situatin is between tw CC students, Cllege plicy will apply and the Dean f Students will have primary respnsibility fr actins. If a student displays vilent r suicidal behavir 1. Determine if yu need t seek medical assistance immediately. 2. Make sure the student is under safe supervisin. 3. Make sure the rest f the grup is prvided fr. 4. 3 Student r faculty leader becmes a victim f assault, rape, r harassment 1. The victim has the right t decide whether r nt t infrm/cntact the lcal authrities. 2. Ensure that thse rights are nt vilated. 3. Determine apprpriate strategies fr separating the victim and perpetratr (i.e., husing, class, etc.) and assure their safety fr the rest f the trip, at minimum. 4. Ensure that smene is with the victim, preferably smene f the victim s chice. 5. Ensure the rest f the grup is prvided fr while yu are attending t the incident. 6. As required by federal law, reprt any incident t CC s Title IX Crdinatr, Gail Murphy-Geiss Office: , immediately upn ntice f such an incident if pssible, via . If such ntice is nt pssible frm a certain place r at a certain time, such ntice must be made as sn as the faculty member returns t the Cllege. Prtectin f victims identities will be hnred t the extent pssible, but it cannt be assured. 7. Guide the victim t the apprpriate resurces the Sexual Assault Respnse Crdinatr (available 24/7 via phne), lcal health care persnnel (as recmmended via CC travel/health insurance prtcls - SOS), and/r law enfrcement whatever is apprpriate. 8. SOS can assist with referral services fr English speaking medical prfessinals. Call SOS if necessary. 9. Cntact Heather Hrtn, CC s Sexual Assault Respnse Crdinatr. If yu are cntacted t answer questins, refer the media t the CC Cmmunicatins Office, Media relatins specialists in the Cmmunicatins Office will handle all cntact with the media. 13. Unless there is a medical emergency, refrain frm cntacting the student s/faculty s emergency cntacts. The victim shuld have the pprtunity t make decisins abut infrming thers. CC staff like the Sexual Assault Respnse Crdinatr can assist the victim in making decisins if desired. Tgether with Gail Murphy-Geiss and Heather Hrtn decide what the next steps are. As fr preventin f recurrence and lnger term effects n victims, Title IX Crdinatr will wrk with the Assciate Dean f Glbal, Cmmunity and Summer Prgrams t prvide nging cunseling r ther apprpriate assistance fr victims. They will als wrk with the apprpriate faculty members t evaluate their curses s as t minimize future risk. Sexual Assault Respnse Infrmatin fr faculty and staff The respnse fr students experiencing sexual assault abrad shuld mirrr the respnse fr students experiencing sexual assault n campus. 3

4 (1) The physical health f the victim is a primary cncern. Urge the student t get medical assistance (i.e., medical evaluatin and treatment fr physical trauma and sexually transmitted infectin; emergency cntraceptin). If frensic evidence cllectin is desired and available, it is best nt t shwer, brush teeth, r change clthes. Cntact with the plice may be required if frensic evidence is t be cllected; asking hspital staff abut the prcesses in place will be helpful. Victims are typically able t seek medical attentin withut being frced t talk t the plice r cperate with criminal prsecutin. Medical exams can be quite stressful. Therefre it is crucial fr a staff/faculty member t serve as a calm, supprtive and nn-judgmental supprt wh will accmpany the victim t the hspital and remain available thrughut the exam. Because sexual assault ften leaves victims/survivrs feeling pwerless, it is very imprtant fr her/him t feel that she/he is in cntrl f the decisins that affect her/his life. The decisins t seek medical attentin, file a frmal cmplaint t the cllege r t reprt t the plice are decisins that nly the victim/survivr shuld make. Obviusly, if there are injuries in which a victim is nt able t make decisins, yu will need t assist. (2) An additinal factr t cnsider early in the respnse is safety. Sexual assaults ften ccur in the victim/survivr s rm/hme and are mst ften perpetrated by smene the victim/survivr knws. It is therefre imprtant t assess hw safe they feel in their rm/hme and t pursue ther husing ptins as they may be available. Try t arrange their envirnment s that they will nt be likely t cme int cntact with their attacker again. A student r faculty leader is accused f cmmitting a crime 1. Call SOS. 3. Determine if the persn shuld nt be left alne until actin can be taken. 4. Ensure the rest f the grup is prvided fr while yu are attending t the incident. 5. Cntact Clrad Cllege, using the prvided list f cntacts. If it s after wrk hurs, yu have yur cntact infrmatin ready. 6. CC will cntact the CC cunselr n call. 7. Keep a recrd f as many details as pssible pertaining t the incident. 8. Faculty and students shuld refrain frm making statements t the media. If it s after wrk hurs, cntact CC Campus Security wh will make cntact with the persn n call. Make sure yu have cntact infrmatin ready. 5. Faculty and students shuld refrain frm making statements t the media. If yu are cntacted t answer questins, refer the media t the CC Cmmunicatins Office, Media relatins specialists in the Cmmunicatins Office will handle all cntact with the media. If a student decides t leave the prgram unexpectedly 1. Cntact Clrad Cllege, using the prvided list f cntacts. If it s after wrk hurs, yu have cntact infrmatin ready. 2. The apprpriate Deans ffices will wrk with the student cncerning financial and academic issues. 3. Ensure that the rest f the grup is infrmed abut the student s departure. 4. If the student was staying in a hmestay, cntact the family t infrm them abut the student s decisin. A student ges missing 1. Determine if yu shuld immediately cntact the lcal authrities in the hst cuntry. This culd be the plice, medical prfessinal, U.S. Embassy fficials, etc. 2. Check the student s accmmdatin. Find ut if anyne in the grup knws where the missing student was intending t g. 3. Ensure that n ne in the grup cntacts friends/family t tell them wh is missing. Smene frm CC will cntact the missing student s emergency cntact. 4. Keep a recrd f as many details as pssible pertaining t the incident. 5. Cntact Clrad Cllege, using the prvided list f cntacts. If it s after wrk hurs, yu have cntact infrmatin ready. 6. Faculty and students shuld refrain frm making statements t the media. Prevent ther students frm cntacting friends/family until victim s family has been ntified. Dismissing a student Always cnsult with the Dean f Students (r the Dean s designate) AND the Dean f Glbal, Cmmunity, and Summer Prgrams befre dismissing any student frm the prgram. Cancelling a prgram A decisin t cancel r suspend a prgram shuld invlve cnversatins with the Dean f Glbal, Cmmunity, and Summer Prgrams and the Dean f the Cllege. If the decisin is made, the Cllege will assist with arrangements fr yur return. Debriefing an emergency When yu return t campus yu shuld debrief any emergency r incident (big r small) with the Dean f Glbal, Cmmunity, and Summer Prgrams and ther relevant campus adminitratin. Debriefing is an pprtunity t learn and imprve ur risk management practices. 7

Internatinal SOS prvides all students, faculty, and staff traveling utside the U.S. with internatinal medical, security and travel assistance. These services are meant t supplement the plicies, prcedures and supprt that Clrad Cllege already has in place. Internatinal SOS is NOT health insurance. What benefits are prvided? Internatinal SOS prvides a range f services, including emergency evacuatin, medically-supervised repatriatin, medical mnitring, emergency and rutine medical advice, lst dcument assistance, emergency persnal cash advances and mre. SOS will als wrk with yu t identify English-speaking medical prfessinals in-cuntry. Can I cntact SOS prir t my departure? Yes! Faculty members traveling abrad with students are encuraged t cntact SOS prir t departure. (Call frm the U.S.) SOS can help yu identify the best medical facilities in yur lcatin, prvide referrals t lcal mental health cunselrs, prvide infrmatin abut the nearest U.S. cnsulate/embassy, etc. Will Internatinal SOS pay my medical bills? Althugh Internatinal SOS will prvide medical assistance, the patient will need t pay directly fr any services received. Only the csts f emergency evacuatin and medically-supervised repatriatin will be cvered by Clrad Cllege as part f ur cntract with SOS. What if I need a dctr? The Internatinal SOS wrldwide alarm centers are listed n the back f yur card. Call the Internatinal SOS alarm center that is nearest t yu fr a referral t a dctr. What if I need prescriptin medicatin? If yu require a prescriptin that a lcal physician cannt btain, r yu need t replace lst, stlen r depleted medicatin, Internatinal SOS will, when permissible by lcal law, send the needed medicatin t yu. What if I am hspitalized? Call the nearest Internatinal SOS wrldwide alarm center if yu are hspitalized. Internatinal SOS will immediately take steps t evaluate the care yu are receiving and determine what actins must be taken t ensure yur safe and speedy recvery. What if lcal medical facilities are nt adequate? If yu are hspitalized in an area where adequate medical facilities are nt available, Internatinal SOS will btain apprval frm Clrad Cllege t evacuate yu t a medical facility capable f prviding the required care. A physician supervises evacuatins, and when necessary, a medical specialist r nurse will accmpany yu during the evacuatin. An air ambulance will be used when required. What is security evacuatin assistance and crdinatin? SOS will assist in the event f threatening situatins such as civil and/r plitical unrest, insurrectins, revlutin r similar situatins by prviding infrmatin, guidance and resurces in the event persnal safety and security can n lnger be assured. 10
