1 Trauma, Emergency & Critical Care What matters most to you?
2 The patience and compassion of others Emily Pearson, patient As a recognized leader in trauma, critical care and disaster preparedness, Sunnybrook s expertise is in high demand. Meeting this responsibility is becoming increasingly difficult. Our Emergency Department has nearly double the patient admission rate of any other hospital in the province. Over 80 hospitals refer their patients to Sunnybrook every day. Addressing the needs of patients today, while making the scientific breakthroughs that will maximize the chances of survival for patients tomorrow, requires we double our capacity in trauma and critical care.
3 The officer on the scene said that he had never seen anything like it. The force of the impact knocked me out of my shoes and socks. In February 2008, while out running errands, university student Emily Pearson was struck by a car travelling at 80 km/h. She flew over 100 feet. I remember getting a phone call from the hospital in North Bay letting me know my daughter was in critical condition. Her doctor said he was sending her to the only hospital he knew could save her life, Sunnybrook, said Larry Pearson. After arriving at Sunnybrook, her parents, Larry and Sharon, learned that Emily had major head trauma, a severe knee injury, a lacerated spleen, a dislocated pelvis and a fractured neck. She was in critical care and the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at Sunnybrook for over two months and to this day, does not remember the accident or the time she spent in the hospital. The Sunnybrook team of professionals, the amazing facilities and the constant support of the staff saved Emily s life. I pray that anyone who is in the same critical condition is lucky enough to be brought to Sunnybrook. They saved my daughter s life. Emily Pearson, patient After taking a tour of Sunnybrook, we were compelled to invest in Sunnybrook s Trauma, Emergency and Critical Care Program. We are proud to help Sunnybrook expand its capacity and offer faster and safer treatment options. Ultimately, these changes will help save people s lives. Through creativity and determination, Sunnybrook s world-class trauma and emergency care specialists save the lives of the most seriously injured and ill people in the province. By supporting them, we are making a difference. We certainly encourage other organizations to do the same. Peter Sharpe, Cadillac Fairview, donor A trauma team works to save the life of a patient rushed to Sunnybrook s Tory Regional Trauma Centre with serious head injuries. Sunnybrook is Ontario s critical care central. We have the highest concentration of critical care resources in addition to Canada s largest trauma program and the nation s biggest burn centre. Our approach to care is being replicated in centres around the world and is heralded internationally as the gold standard. To meet the rapidly growing needs of the province, we are investing in state-of-the-art fully equipped facilities that will double the size of our emergency and critical care areas as well as our trauma capacity. Simply put, this investment will allow us to save more lives today and tomorrow.
4 Nursing staff closely monitor the vital signs of a burn victim shortly after his arrival by air ambulance to Sunnybrook. Over 1,200 trauma patients are treated at Sunnybrook s Tory Regional Trauma Centre each year. Despite increases in violent crimes and other trauma-related incidents, Sunnybrook has maintained a remarkable 90 per cent survival rate. We re testing the affects of temperature and the use of liquid salt to stop massive bleeding in trauma victims. Investment Highlights $22m Renovated and expanded trauma, Sunnybrook is here for you when it matters most. By investing in our Trauma, Emergency & Critical Care Program, you can be there for our most critical patients. Resident surgeon Dr. Jennifer Chu administers urgently needed care to a victim of a motor vehicle collision. emergency and critical care facilities Patients with complex and urgent needs are referred to Sunnybrook from over 80 hospitals every day. In all too many cases we are their best hope for survival. We are Canada s leading experts in stopping massive bleeding, managing wounds, performing emergency surgery and controlling acute infections and shock. Our patients lives depend on the expertise and determination of our highly skilled teams. We will invest in a new worldclass facility with state-of-the-art diagnostic equipment, leading-edge infection control measures and specially designed features to ensure patient safety. This new space will enable us to provide first-rate care to an ever increasing number of patients. $3m Brain and electrical injury research Our trauma, emergency and critical care teams are at the forefront of research and education. We develop the newest resuscitation methods and the most effective ways to stabilize patients so that they survive emergency surgery. We research new ways to ensure that skin grafts for burn patients take and we are a world leader in electrical burn management. We change models of care throughout Ontario, apply our expertise overseas in countries that need it most and transfer knowledge to the next generation of specialists. With your investment, Sunnybrook physicians, surgeons and critical care nurses will continue to develop innovative approaches to care that will save countless lives in the years to come.
