4 COURSE STRUCTURE You are required to complete 9 units of study for the Diploma of Retail Management (SIR50107) BSBMGT502B Manage people performance BSBMGT516C Facilitate continuous improvement BSBRSK501A Manage risk BSBLED502A Manage programs that promote personal effectiveness BSBMGT515A Manage operational plan BSBADM506B Manage business document design and development SIRXMGT005A Set strategic plans SIRXFIN005A Manage operations to budget BSBHRM506A Manage Recruitment, Selection and Induction Processes This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to manage the performance of staff who report to them directly. Development of key result areas and key performance indicators and standards, coupled with regular and timely coaching and feedback, provide the basis for performance management. This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to lead and manage continuous improvement systems and processes. Particular emphasis is on the development of systems and the analysis of information to monitor and adjust performance strategies, and to manage opportunities for further improvements This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to manage risks in a range of contexts across the organisation or for a specific business unit or area. The unit has been designed to be consistent with AS/NZS 4360:2004 Risk management. This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to manage programs within a health and wellbeing focus. The unit addresses the management of the range of programs that would typically be associated with health and wellbeing such as stress management, smoking cessation, exercise, Employee Assistance Programs (EAPs). This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to develop and monitor implementation of the operational plan to provide efficient and effective workplace practices within the organisation s productivity and profitability plans. Management at a strategic level requires systems and procedures to be developed and implemented to facilitate the organisation s operational plan. This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to establish standards for the design and production of organisational documents and to manage document design and production processes to ensure agreed standards are met. No licensing, legislative, regulatory or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of endorsement. This unit involves setting objectives and targets both long-term and short-term, and developing action plans consistent with the store s overall aims and objectives. Senior management staff are responsible for this function. This unit requires those with managerial responsibility to estimate expenditure, prepare budgets and monitor performance against those budgets within an appropriate business accounting system. This unit requires some supervision of other staff. This unit applies to human resources managers or human resources personnel who take responsibility for managing all aspects of selecting new staff and orientating those staff to their new positions. It is not assumed that the manager will be directly involved in the selection processes themselves, although this may well be the case. In small organisations this role may belong to someone who is not a dedicated human resources professional; the unit however will still be applicable. To enrol call or visit 4

5 ASSESSMENTS AOT uses competency based assessment methods to ensure students have demonstrated their performance to a required standard. Competency based assessment is the focus of accredited vocational courses on what the student can actually do and the standard at which they are able to perform. Performance is measured in terms of whether students meet the prescribed levels of competency, not how well they carry out tasks relative to each other or the length of time taken to attain the skills. AOT s assessment process may consist of the following tasks, dependant on the unit/chapter requirements: Portfolios/case studies Holistic Assessments Multiple choice and/or Short answer questionnaires ENTRY REQUIREMENTS There are two alternative pathways for entry into the Diploma of Retail Management. 1. Be recognised as competent, through a recognised training program or recognition process, against the following units of competency: SIRXCOM001A Communicate in the workplace SIRXIND001A Work effectively in a retail environment Plus one of the following: SIRXCCS003A Coordinate interaction with customers; or SIRXSLS004A Build relationships with customers 2. Have sufficient relevant wholesale or retail employment experience. A current or previous job role that involves or has involved the application of the above competencies would be a satisfactory indicator for entry. A determination need not involve a formal process of measuring, evaluating or recording performance against the units of competency. Examples of evidence to support a determination could include: Job descriptions and references from current or past employers An entry interview to determine what competencies have been applied in the wholesale or retail environment in a paid or voluntary capacity.
