1 Spring 2015 News Letter Key Dates Term 3 ends 18th Sept School Holidays 19th Sept- 4th Oct Social Skills Holiday Program: 22nd-24th September 29th- 1st October Term 4 starts: 5th Oct The Zones of Regulation Welcome to our Spring Newsletter for 2015! As the weather is warming up it is a great time to get out and about and exploring all that Melbourne has to offer! We have put together ideas for School Holiday activities, information about upcoming events and some new resources at the clinic. Don t forget our Holiday Programs! The kids and therapists always have great fun with lots of Social Learning happening. The Zones of Regulation is a curriculum geared towards helping students gain skills in consciously regulating their actions, which in turn leads to increased control and problem solving. Using a cognitive behavior approach, the curriculum s learning activities are designed to help students recognize when they are in different states called zones, with each of four zones represented by a different color. In the activities, students also learn how to use strategies or tools to stay in a zone or move from one to another. The curriculum also includes worksheets, other handouts, and visuals to display and share. These can be photocopied from this book or printed from the accompanying CD. In addition, The Zones of Regulation posters can be purchased to support these concepts in the classroom. Workshops include Robotics, Minecraft, Girlcraft, Coding, App and Web Design and Looming for 5-18 years. Various locations include Brighton Grammar, Kingswood College and Tintern Grammar. New movie :Blinky Bill - The Movie Take the kids this school holidays to a fun and exciting movie about an Australian children s Icon! An adventurous young koala embarks on a journey across the wild and dangerous Australian outback in the hope of finding his missing father, but he soon discovers that there is more to being a hero than meets the eye.

3 Wash Your Kids in Orange Juice Loud Mouth presents Legendary children s singer/songwriter Peter Combe together with some fantastic kids from Theatre Bugs comes to the Darebin Arts & Entertainment Centre with a set of infectious singable songs for kids and families in the September School Holidays. Big and little kids will sing their hearts out to Mr Clicketty Cane, Newspaper Mama, Juicy Juicy Green Grass, Spaghetti Bolognaise, Quirky Berserky the Turkey from Turkey and many more. There s even hip hop included for the kids to bop along too. Perfect for kids aged 3-10 and their families. LEGO CHALLENGE IS BACK!!! e2 Young Engineers offer Lego Challenge for children between the ages of 6-12 years. We build educational models like amusement park rides, aircraft, transportation vehicles, cranes etc using Lego bricks and Lego technic while developing creativity, concentration and social skills to name a few. See school-holiday-activities.html for more School Holiday ideas WRAP UP FROM The MICHELLE GARCIA WINNER Melbourne & Sydney Tour In August/September Spectrum Speech Pathology was proud to host Michelle Garcia Winner, founder of Social Thinking. Michelle presented Masterclasses in both Sydney and Melbourne with delegates flying in from New Zealand, Beijing & interstate to attend. We were delighted to have Dr Pam Crooke, Director of Research, and Clinical Services at Social Thinking join us on Friday afternoon in Melbourne. Michelle and Pam educated, challenged and inspired us all! Michelle referenced her work on the Social Radar in relation to the DSM 5 and also the relation- -ship to the AusVELS (Australian Curriculum). She gave us lots of practical strategies and ideas for working with children who have social challenges, including the many children we see on the Autism Spectrum! PLUS! Michelle has promised the release of a new set of books in The Incredible Flexible You series, due out in early Watch this space for updates!
