2 COURSE OUTLINE Visual language shapes our environment. We interact with communication design constantly in our everyday lives. This nationally accredited Diploma of Graphic Design provides students with an understanding of fundamental design practices including concept development, typography, layout design and creative thinking. Students gain practical skills across the industry s leading creative software packages along with a sound knowledge of professional practice and design theory. This project-based program closely assimilates industry processes whilst allowing individual creativity to flourish. Students gain exposure to contemporary design trends and explore the dynamics of print and digital design including packaging, publication and web site development. Participants develop a folio of creative work spanning branding and identity through to digital and print layout design. PATHWAYS AND CREDIT Other university degree programs recognise and give credit for study completed at Latrobe College of Art & Design. WHO CAN APPLY Both established and inexperienced applicants are encouraged to apply. Applications are open to both Year 12 and mature applicants. All prospective students must meet with school staff and present examples of original work and/or details of experience. We are a nationally registered independent college and offer the nationally accredited Diploma of Visual Arts (CUV50111) and Diploma of Graphic Design (CUV50311). INTERNSHIPS & WORK EXPERIENCE Latrobe College has fostered relationships with renowned local design studios who offer internship and work experience opportunities to passionate students. NEW YORK & VENICE BIENNALE TOURS Each year Latrobe College students have the opportunity to attend art tours in either New York or the Venice Biennale. For two weeks students become fully immersed in art culture and undertake drawing and studio workshops, producing an art journal. These overseas art tours are credited with a unit of study within the Diploma of Graphic Design. Students visit leading art galleries, museums, bookstores, art shops and significant sites within each city. Upon return to Melbourne, participants are invited to show work in an exhibition of travel journals at the Latrobe College Gallery. Credit will be given towards a unit of study within the Diploma of Graphic Gesign. LATROBE COLLEGE GALLERY The Latrobe College Gallery provides students with opportunities to exhibit work throughout their study. Several spaces allow for a variety of pieces to be exhibited including painting, installation, design, photography and video works. 2

4 SUBJECTS COMMUNICATION DESIGN This comprehensive subject in design fundamentals introduces students to design principles including colour, hierarchy, balance and alignment. Emphasis is placed on using symbolic language and archetypes to build effective communication through strong visual narratives. Tutorials, projects and in-class exercises facilitate a thorough understanding of communication design basics. CONCEPT & IDENTITY Our Concept & Identity subject pivots around a fourstage process designed to aid creative output and achieve outstanding outcomes in visual communication. Students explore creative thinking techniques and apply knowledge to create effective branding through a series of tailored design briefs. Branding and identity design are core disciplines in creative industry. In this subject students learn what it takes to create a successful brand that aligns with the goals of a business and also effectively communicates with a target audience. Creative projects range from identity application and collateral design through to exploring the delicate balance required for re-branding a business. Typography is a language unique to communication design and in this subject, students gain pragmatic typesetting skills along with a passion for the rich history and technical artistry of type. Students are encouraged to foster a love for type through research and observation, with a view to building a sound tool kit for effective use of type as a fundamental aspect of design. MULTIMEDIA IMAGING & GRAPHICS This subject provides a comprehensive introduction to Adobe s Creative suite. Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop and InDesign are the leading creative software packages across the design, art, photography and publishing industries. Through a series of tutorials and creative projects, students build a solid tool kit for use in designing outcomes of a professional standard and polished finish. Areas covered include digital imaging of photographs and artworks, effective file management for print and web, along with logo design, type and publication layout. In this subject students are given the opportunity produce a body of creative works to contemporary design standards. 3 DRAWING & MIXED MEDIA In this subject students explore both fundamental methods and alternative approaches in drawing. This subject is centred on developing skills and increasing a vocabulary of drawing techniques. Teachers guide participants in harnessing individual drawing tendencies through working with life models and elements in indoor and outdoor environments. Experiments are conducted in wet and dry media including biro, charcoal, graphite, chalk pastel, ink, collage, paint and photography. WEB DESIGN The last five years have seen exciting changes in web design. It is now essential that communication designers have an understanding of how design translates to a web environment. In this subject students gain a basic understanding of HTML, CSS and responsive web design along with CMS and SEO principles. A rich variety of case studies are investigated with a view to identifying what works well and what makes life difficult for the user in the ever-growing arena of web. Through exposure to the latest web trends and with step-by-step guidance, students have the opportunity to design and build sites to a professional standard.

5 STUDIO ART This is a practical and theoretical subject for beginners and intermediate level students of contemporary art practice. This subject encourages students to explore a wide range of methods and ideas whilst receiving advice and support to identify and foster their own interests. There is an emphasis on developing an individual practice in conjunction with projects and exhibitions. Studio Art is invaluable for students working to develop a folio as well as those seeking the opportunity to become involved in exhibition projects. PACKAGING & PUBLICATION This subject explores the print-based disciplines of design industry. Students gain skills in publication design through utilising grid layouts and typesetting along with design principles to create dynamic compositions. Contemporary case studies are drawn on for inspiration and to inform unique project outcomes ranging from magazine layout to collateral design. The fundamental aspects of packaging design are explored through creative project work and backed up with tutorials centered on contemporary printing methods. Students gain knowledge in how to translate creative concepts into professional 3D packaging outcomes. DESIGN THEORY This subject gives students the opportunity to engage with the dynamic scope of contemporary design theory and an array of historical design movements. Knowledge gained in this subject provides students with a strong foundation on which to build their own unique visual language and make informed decisions in a creative environment. With a strong focus on professional practice, students gain exposure to briefing and consultation processes, along with insights into creative studio management. Case studies and trends are explored through looking at current local and international design studios and campaigns. This is the subject where students learn to live and breathe design. PHOTOGRAPHY A This fundamental exploration of photography provides students with knowledge in camera usage, image capture and digital manipulation (using Adobe Photoshop). Conceptual approaches to photography are explored and students are encouraged to develop unique responses to a variety of photographic projects. PHOTOGRAPHY B In this subject a range of DSLR finishing techniques are explored using Adobe Photoshop and Final Cut Pro. Critical appraisal of trends in contemporary photographic art is undertaken through a series of lectures, workshops and attendance at exhibitions. Students also examine sound, video, installation and interactive art. Participants create photographic and/ or video works and investigate installation or interactive online projects. Photography A is a recommended prerequisite of this class. 4

Prospective students are asked to present a folio with examples of any of their own design work. Both experienced and inexperienced students encouraged to apply. The course coordinator will reply to applications and send an Information Kit about the course and living in Melbourne. Students require a 5.5 IELTS score for English or equivalent if English is a second language. The IELTS test can be undertaken after completing an application or before commencement of study. On acceptance into the course, the Latrobe College sends a Letter of Offer. A Confirmation of Enrolment (COE) is issued once Latrobe College receives an Acceptance Agreement Form and payment of fees or a deposit is made. 5

The quality and diversity of work produced by students and the pace with which many develop has long been acknowledged. Many students have achieved success in their chosen discipline in Australia and overseas. All of these accomplishments are a testament to the high level of teaching and industry partnerships that the college has attracted over the years. Some of our current teachers include: LEON CALERO Communication Design, Concept & Identity Communication Design BA, RMIT, 2005; Post Graduate Business Management, Swinburne, Leon Calero is the Head of Design at Latrobe College. He has lectured in design at various institutions including RMIT. He is co-founder and creative director of Melbourne-based design studio, Le Sphinx. Leon s work spans multiple disciplines from brand identity to web design, print collateral and sound design. He has been invited to speak at events including Melbourne s State of Design Festival, the Museum of Victoria s Top Design series and the Australian Graphic Design Association s First 5 Out lecture series. GREG PENN Photography Photography and Film BA with Honours, University of Wales, UK; MFA (Research), VCA, Greg Penn is the Head of Photography at Latrobe College. He has been the recipient of the Linden Postcard Award, Friends of VCA Award, and the Most Innovative and Best Interpreted Awards from MUDfest. He has exhibited work throughout Australia, New York and the UK and his work is represented in private collections internationally. His work Quick Art is part of the Melbourne Now exhibition at the NGV. KITTY SINCLAIR Design History, Theory & Professional Practice, Packaging & Publication Communication Design BA, RMIT, 2005; Post Graduate Business Management, Swinburne, 2008; MA Creative Writing, Publishing & Editing, Melbourne University. Kitty Sinclair is co-founder and creative director of Melbourne-based design studio, Le Sphinx. Her work spans multiple disciplines from brand identity to print collateral and professional writing. She has been invited to speak at events including Melbourne s State of Design Festival, the Museum of Victoria s Top Design series and the Australian Graphic Design Association s First 5 Out lecture series. Kitty has lectured in design, creative thinking and professional practice at various institutions including RMIT. HONOR BRADBEER Drawing Studied at L Accademia Italiana, Florence; SangMyung University, Seoul, 2001; Fine Art BA, RMIT, 2003; MFA, RMIT, Honor Bradbeer has exhibited in Melbourne, Sydney and Hong Kong. Her work is featured in The National Gallery of Australia s printmaking collection and also in private collections throughout Australia, Europe the UK and the USA. JANE COCKS Studio Art Practice BA (Fine Art) Prahran College, 1979; Post Graduate VCA, 1983; MFA (Research) RMIT, Jane Cocks is the Head of Art at Latrobe College. For over twenty-five years she has tutored and lectured at various institutions including VCA, RMIT, Monash, CSU (NSW) and ANU (Canberra). She has acted as Head of Drawing at VCA and has worked as an outside assessor for MA students at Monash Uni and VCA. Jane s work is included in private and public collections throughout Europe, Argentina and Australia, including the NGV. She has been a recipient of the Dame Elizabeth Murdoch Travelling Fellowship and Australia Council Awards including residencies in Paris and New York City. 6
