1 KIN 147 Lab 03: Projectile Throwing Video Data Collection READ this entire lab before coming to your lab section. Your lab grade DEPENDS on you following the instructions EXACTLY as written. GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS You WILL work in groups of three. o Each of you will have an accelerometer data collection partner and a video data collection partner Your acceleration data collection partner will ALWAYS collect your acceleration data. Your video data collection partner will ALWAYS collect your video data. o Since you will analyze your own movements, the quality of the data your partners collect will have an impact on your grade. The best way to achieve a high lab score is to work with your lab partners. Make sure your partners collect good data for you. o Each three-person group will share one accelerometer and one video camera. o Each person in your group must be assigned to one of the following IDs: Student A Student B Student C o Accelerometer Data Collection Partners Student A will collect Student B s accelerometer data Student B will collect Student C s accelerometer data Student C will collect Student A s accelerometer data o Video Data Collection Partners Student A will collect Student C s video data Student B will collect Student A s video data Student C will collect Student B s video data o There are three roles that the members of your group will take on during data collection activities in this lab: the participant, the accelerometer data collector and the video data collector. The participant performs the movement activity The accelerometer data collector is in charge of operating the accelerometer The video data collector is in charge of operating the video camera o Each member of your group will perform these roles as outline in the following table: o Each member of your group will perform the specific data collection activities in the exact order prescribed before the next member of your group performs the data collection activities. 2 LAB SPECIFIC INSTRUCTIONS For this lab, there is no accelerometer data collection Read the instructions for each testing condition COMPLETELY before starting data collection. Be sure you understand each step for the testing condition before starting data collection. You will be performing four (4) throws for maximum projectile speed. In the instructions, I give very specific instructions for performing each throw for this lab. Part of your grade will be based on how well you follow the instructions for performing the required throws. Each member of your group will collect video data as described below: o Pre-Movement Activities You will be performing your movement activities outdoors. Go to the mezzanine level at the Event Center When you get there, each group needs to find a location with a blank wall for the background of your video. You will also need 20 feet to the right of the filming area, as viewed from the video camera. Recording Data Collection Trial Information In your data collection journal, your group must record the following each time one of you performs a throw: o The name of person performing the throw o Which throw is being performed? o The time the throw is performed o Whether or not the throw was a good data collection trial or one that needed to be redone Tripod Setup Rotate the tripod handle so that it does not interfere with spreading the tripod legs Release the top extension clamp of each leg and fully extend this section of the leg. o Re-secure the extension clamp Fully raise the center extension to elevate the camera mount as high as possible. Spread the tripod legs and place the tripod on ground approximately 20 feet away from the spot where the performer will be performing the activity. DO NOT ATTACH THE CAMERA. o Data Collection Activities Video Camera Setup Turn on the video camera. Look at the digital viewfinder and perform the following: o Put the camera into the Shutter Speed AE mode For the black Casio EZ-ZR100 (see bottom for model #) There is a circular dial on the top of the video camera Rotate this dial until a capital letter S appears in the middle top of the display. 2

3 For the silver Casio EZ-ZR400 (see bottom for model #) There is a circular dial on the top of the video camera Rotate this dial until a capital letter S appears in the middle top of the display. o Set the camera shutter speed Shutter speeds for each throw Throw number #1: 1/1000 of a second Throw number #2: 1/1000 of a second Throw number #3: 1/60 of a second Throw number #4: 1/60 of a second For the black Casio EZ-ZR100 (see bottom for model #) There is a circular ring around the set button Push the bottom edge of the ring. This will bring up menu on the right hand side of the display Push the top edge of the ring to move the selection to the label S Push the right edge of the ring to change the shutter speed to the shutter speed required for each throw Push the set button The shutter speed should be displayed along the left edge of the display. For the silver Casio EZ-ZR400 (see bottom for model #) There is a circular ring around the set button Push the bottom edge of the ring. This will bring up menu on the left hand side of the display Push the top edge of the ring to move the selection to the label S Push the right edge of the ring to change the shutter speed to the shutter speed required for each throw Push the set button The shutter speed should be seen along the left edge of the display. o Set the camera frame rate Frame rates for each throw Throw number #1: 30 fps Throw number #2: HS240 Throw number #3: 30 fps Throw number #4: HS240 For the black Casio EZ-ZR100 (see bottom for model #) Press the menu button Three tab menus will appear Push the left or right edge of the ring surrounding the set button to select the Quality tab. to select the 2 nd Quality item. to bring up a list of camera speeds (i.e., frame rates). 3

4 Push the top or bottom edge of the ring surrounding the set to select HS240. The letters and numbers HS240 should be along the right edge of the display if you do this correctly. For the silver Casio EZ-ZR400 (see bottom for model #) Two tab menus will appear at the left edge of the display Make sure the tab with the little camera is selected o If it is not, push the left edge of the ring to select the current tab o Push the top edge of the ring surrounding the set button to select the tab with a little camera on it. o Push the right edge of the ring surrounding the set button to select the menu for this tab button to select Movie Quality to bring up a list of camera speeds (i.e., frame rates). Push the top or bottom edge of the ring surrounding the set to select HS240. The letters and numbers HS240 should in the top right corner of the display if you do this correctly. o Set the camera focus to infinity For the black Casio EZ-ZR100 (see bottom for model #) Press the menu button Three tab menus will appear at the top edge of the displace Push the left or right edge of the ring surrounding the set button to select the REC tab. button to select Focus button to bring up a list of focusing options button to select the symbol The symbol should be seen along the left edge of the display if you do this correctly. 5 o If it is not, push the left edge of the ring to select the current tab o Push the top edge of the ring surrounding the set button to select the tab with a little camera on it. o Push the right edge of the ring surrounding the set button to select the menu for this tab button to select Focus button to bring up a list of focusing options button to select the symbol. The symbol should be seen along the left edge of the display if you do this correctly. Attach the video camera to the tripod Adjust the video camera and tripod for the participant Make sure the video camera is horizontally level (left-to-right AND front-toback) o Use the bubble level on the tripod and center the bubble in the middle of the circle Adjust the video camera and tripod height o Have the participant stand next to the video camera and tripod o Lower the center column of the tripod until the camera is at the participant s waist height If the participant waist height is above the camera, Release the lower extension clamp of each leg and fully extend this section of the leg and re-secure the extension clamp and then adjust the center column Adjust the video camera and tripod so that they are perpendicular to the wall o Find a line of the ground that is perpendicular to the wall The ground on the mezzanine level of the Event Center is made of brick. There are lines on the ground because of the brick-laying pattern that are perpendicular to each wall o Look at the camera viewfinder. Move the video camera and tripod (left or right; not forward or back) until the line on the ground that you chose is straight up-and-down AND in the exact center (left-to-right) of the field of view. Adjust the video camera zoom o Have the participant stand three (3) from the wall facing to the right o Have the participant perform several practice throws while you watch them on the camera viewfinder o Using the video camera s zoom feature, zoom the display so that the participant s hand is just below the top of the display when the projectile is released. 5

6 NOTE: each member of your group should know how to setup the video camera. This may be a part of the lab practical exam. The Throws The participant will perform four throws for maximum projectile speed. The accelerometer data collector will catch the projectile The video data collector will perform the following tasks o Change the shutter speed and the frame rate before each throw (see the instructions above for the correct shutter speeds and frames rates for each throw). o Push the button with the solid red circle on it to start the recording. o Tell the participant to throw the projectile for maximum projectile speed o Push the button with the solid red circle on it to stop the recording. Once you have collected the video data for each member of your group, return to the classroom and perform the following: Give your video camera to Dr. Kao Put all of your equipment away. KEEP THE FOLLOWING IN MIND: 1) Your lab grade is dependent on good data collected by your lab partners. a) If you don t believe good data were collected for any reason, redo the jump 2) There will be NO changes to lab grades because poor data were collected. 6
