2 General information about the M&E data collection Delta Cultura Cabo Verde (DCCV) gathers and generates the data shown in the following graphs in the online M&E software Infocus. DCCV is able to use this software since 2012, thanks to a cooperation with streetfootballworld and Acumen Social Technologies. As the software had to be developed and adapted to DCCV needs over the last years not all the desired data is being analyzed yet. What is mainly missing is the data about attendance. All the programs have attendance lists but the input into the software did not yet work well during the school year 2013/2014. From 2014/2015 on, it is working and will produce useful data. All the M&E tools working well and producing useful data are shown in the graphs below. DCCV will continue develop M&E tools as soon as the existing ones get into routine and work as desired. Data about participants Age and gender of the participants The figures relate to the participants registered for the school year 2014/2015. A total of 267 children and youths are registered (150 male / 117 female). The unsatisfactory difference between male and female participants has different reasons: o football attracts more boys than girls o girls still have to help more at home as boys, so are more often not allowed to participate in daily programs Delta Cultura is working towards gender equality, gets closer every year and hopes to reach there in the next registration period (August/September 2015). 2

The school year in Cape Verde is divided in Trimesters. Each trimester has 2 tests in each discipline. Progress of primary school children (1st until 6th grade) during 2013/2014 4

So for example decline from 20 (the best) to 19,5 is also registered as decline. That explains the high numbers of decline. Positive / negative test grades 2013 / 2014 In the school year 2013/2014 only 15 children out of the 219 registered at the Center (6,8%) had to repeat the school year. Taking in consideration that DCCV works mainly with children with learning disabilities this figure is a strong proof of success. 6 Data about internal observation General explanations Using school grades as a parameter is useful but also not 100% exact as very often the children copy from each other at the test or they obviously get help from the teacher. That is why DCCV started an internal observation system, run by the educators of the Centre. The observation is done with children from 2nd until 4th grade. The observation was done with 60 children in the beginning of the school year and with the same children by the end of the school year. Disciplines observed: reading, understanding (of Portuguese language), and calculating. 7 Average observation grade comparison Grades from 1 to 5 Data about events 2014 Number of events in 2014 DCCV was able to organize a total of 41 events in 2014 There were no events in August as it is the month the staff is on holyday and the Center is closed. 7

8 Type of events in 2014 Number of participants at events in 2014 In total 3954 children and youths participated at the events in This number can mislead in the respect that it does not mean that there were 3954 different children participating. For example at the monthly football games for U7, U9 and U11 there are more or less always the same boys and girls involved. 8

9 Resume The most significant numbers of this report 22% increase of participants from 2013/2014 to 2014/2015 (from 219 to 267 participants). Total of Educational programmes conducted: Total of IT classes conducted: Total of Football trainings conducted: 685 Only 15 out of 219 children (6,8%) had to repeat the school year in 2013/2014. Out of these were 15 years or older. 84% of all school tests of the 219 participants were positive. The average grades from the 3 annual IT tests improved from 10,2 to 11,5 to 15,2 (grades from 1 to 20) In addition to the daily programmes DCCV organized and conducted 41 cultural, sportive and educational events. A total of 3954 children and youths participated in these events. Lessons learned The school support programmes worked well but have to be improved especially for the older children (8th grade upwards). The problem the educators face with nearly all age groups but mostly with the older ones from 8th grade upwards is the lack of interest for school matters. This disinterest is also due to poor Portuguese skills (school language but not mother tongue). DCCV is developing educational games that focus on improvement of their language skills. Monitoring and evaluating the Portuguese skills of the participants will be part of the 2015 tools. Indicators like self esteem, critical thinking, communication ability that DCCV defined to evaluate the success of the programmes are hard to measure. The tools DCCV used in the past years (focus groups, surveys) did not proof useful. DCCV will continue to test tools to evaluate these important indicators. The IT classes improved significantly in the past year due to a 6 months train the trainer course. What is obvious though is, that the children improve very fast in their capability to serve the internet but much slower in handling programs like Word and Excel. Of course this is also a matter of interest. DCCV is now focusing more on these Office programs in order to teach an overall computer knowledge. 9
