16 FDC Judge A More Expansive Role Traditional judicial training teaches us to be distant emotionally and intellectually Approach cases and people analytically and with skepticism Control and power As an FDC judge, there is freedom to inhabit a more expansive role 31 Judicial Officers as Servant Leaders The servant-leader is servant first... The difference manifests itself in the care taken... to make sure that other people s highest priority needs are being served. The best test, and difficult to administer, is: Do those served grow as persons? Do they, while being served, become healthier, wiser, freer, more autonomous, more likely themselves to become servants? 32 16

17 FDC Judge A More Expansive Role Opportunity to change lives People in recovery cannot be forced, they must be motivated, they must be inspired Help to believe that they can achieve what seems impossible See the potential for success before the client sees it We have to be reality-based while also being hopeful and inspiring. This requires the judicial officer to be present and authentic. Sometimes you will be disappointed, but other times you will be amazed. 33 Never Underestimate the Survival Skills Trauma and loss 34 17

22 Key Considerations for Planning 43 Succession Planning: Foresight Succession planning is any effort to ensure the continued effective performance of an organization by making provision for the development, replacement, and strategic application of key people over time. (Rothwell, 2005) This does not typically happen by accident; rather it requires foresight and planning by leadership

23 Key Considerations for Planning Recruit and groom; invite bench officers to observe FDC in action Share judicial satisfaction Formulate judicial tasks list; list out critical relationships and roles Judicial redundancy who covers the bench in the absence of the FDC judge? Working with Presiding Juvenile Court Judge Outreach to stakeholders to prepare for transition 45 Change has a considerable psychological impact on the human mind. To the fearful it is threatening because it means that things may get worse. To the hopeful it is encouraging because things may get better.
