1 Summer MBA Sustainability Consortium Catalog of Courses June-August 2013 MAHARISHI UNIVERSITY OF MANAGEMENT
2 Welcome to the Summer MBA Sustainability Consortium. In the pages of this catalog, you will find descriptions of courses being offered at member institutions during the Summer 2013 session. As an MBA student at an institution that participates in this consortium, you may take any of these courses and transfer the credit into your current MBA program. Questions and Answers Am I eligible to take a course offered through the Consortium? Any student who is already in the MBA program at a member institution may take a course offered through the Consortium, subject to availability. Are any Consortium courses available online? Some are and some are not. See the description of each course. Do I need to go through an admissions process with the school that hosts a course? No. As an MBA student at a Consortium member school, you are automatically eligible to take any of the courses listed in this Consortium Catalog. How do I register for a Consortium course? The course description in this catalog lists a Contact person who will handle your registration and assist you in the procedure for paying tuition and fees. What will be my status as a student at the institution that hosts a course? As a visitor to the host school, you will be a non-matriculated graduate student. How much will it cost to take a course? Each Consortium member sets their own fees for the courses they offer in this catalog. The fee is indicated in the course description. Can I use my financial aid to take a course through the Consortium? Yes. When you indicate your intent to register for a course at a host institution, the Contact person at the host institution will fill out a Consortium Agreement Form and send that to the Financial Aid Office at your (home) school. This will permit you to draw against your federal financial aid eligibility to pay the expenses of a Consortium course. When the host institution confirms that you have started the Consortium course, your home institution will issue the financial aid funds directly to you, and then you must use those to pay the expenses of your course. How will I pay the host institution to take a course? Host institutions will likely prefer that you pay by credit card when you register. If a course is offered only in residence, can I get help finding housing at the host institution? Yes. The Contact person for the course will help you find housing and food during your stay. How do I get credit for the course in my home MBA program? When you have completed the course, the professor will issue a grade. Then the host institution will send a transcript to the Registrar at your home institution who will accept the credits and grade as graduate transfer credit. 2
3 Registration and Financial Aid 3 1. Ask the Contact person, listed in the course description, for a copy of the course syllabus, so you can see what you will be learning. 2. Consult with your MBA advisor to determine that the course is appropriate to your degree plan. 3. the Contact person to request registration in the course. The Contact person will then send a Consortium Agreement Form to your home institution s Financial Aid Office, so you may use your eligible federal financial aid to pay the fees for this course. 4. Pay the tuition fee as instructed by the Contact person. If you will take the course in residence, ask the Contact for advice about local housing and food options. 4 Marylhurst University Strategic Leadership (June 24 July 28) This course allows learners to analyze fundamental theoretical constructs associated with leadership and strategic management from traditional and evolutionary sustainable business management perspectives. The course also invites students to research, discover, compare and contrast global cultural perspectives and strategic approaches to sustainable business management. Strong emphasis is also placed upon the discovery of emerging technological, economic and socio-cultural trends and the analysis of the impact that such trends can have upon the strategic definition and implementation of sustainable and financially viable business strategies. The ethical implications of strategic management and corporate governance are also highlighted. (4 quarter-hour credits) Prerequisites: none. SUS 505, Marylhurst University (Marylhurst, OR) Instructor: Dr. Darrell Burrell. Resource Economics (June 24 - July 28) In this course, learners will be exposed to fundamental theoretical constructs associated with Natural Resource Economics, an evolving transdisciplinary field within the science of economics that focuses upon the interdependence between human societies, their economies and the natural ecosystems supporting them. As a school of thought, Resource Economics encompasses multiple disciplines related to natural and social sciences, with particular focus upon traditional sustainability models (e.g. minerals extraction, forestry) and the economic dimensions of natural resources (e.g. air, water) whose pollution and depletion have important global and societal impacts. Students will reflect upon processes and strategies leading to successful economic growth within the ecological constraints of the earth's natural resources. The policy-making, legal, ethical and managerial aspects of resource economic will also be addresses. (4 quarter-hour credits) Prerequisites: none. SUS 510, Marylhurst University (Marylhurst, OR) Instructor: Dr. Pamela Kaval. Cost with academic credit: $2,740. Cost without academic credit: $1,284. Managerial and Environmental Accounting (June 24 - July 28) A primary purpose of this course is to provide learners with a strong understanding of the notion of cost. Traditional accounting defines the construct in multiple ways (e.g.: hard, soft or hidden costs) within an organizational framework. However, managerial accounting of sustainable business necessitates an understanding of additional dimensions such as environmental costs, and proper identification and measurement of such costs, and ultimately, their effective integration into relevant analytical and financial models. In addition, students will also reflect upon the strategies and processes supporting effective transition from traditional accounting principles to effective triple-bottom-line accounting. Building proficiencies with quantitative and modeling tools will also represent a critical course learning outcome. (4 quarter-hour credits) Prerequisites: none. 4
