4 USING THE COURSE DESCRIPTION BOOK The Program Planning Guide contains all of the essential information needed for a student to plan his/her four year educational program. This guide should be read carefully by both students and parents to assist with making course selections. The philosophy of the Cleveland Heights University Heights City School District is to encourage students to pursue the highest level of instruction matching their motivation, interests, and previous learning. Placement in each program of study is based on four aspects of a student s background: standardized tests of achievement and ability; history of grades earned; teacher recommendations; and input from student and parent. The courses selected each spring will determine the student s schedule of classes for the next school year. 7 COURSE LEVELS Course levels are designed to prepare students for high school graduation and post high school options. Core Courses will increase the emphasis on concepts and critical thinking skills. Honors Courses contain more challenging content and demand a higher standard of student achievement. Advanced Placement Courses are college level courses that prepare students to take Advanced Placement Exams and possibly earn college credit. Students enrolled in Advanced Placement Courses will be required to take the corresponding AP Exams. COURSE OFFERINGS In most instances, courses at Cleveland Heights High School will not be offered when there are fewer than 15 students registered. The administration will recommend exceptions to the Assistant Superintendent when the elimination of a course would (1) interrupt a sequential course (e.g. second year of a language sequence) (2) affect specific courses which are a vital part of an academic high school program, (3) affect courses for seniors which are an integrated part of career present or post secondary educational plans; or other good cause. CREDIT FLEXIBILITY Credit Flexibility is a program that allows students to earn high school credits in nontraditional ways. Students may pursue educational options such as online courses, independent study, internships, service learning, research-based projects, dual credit college-high school programs, distance learning, and educational travel in addition to testing out or demonstrating mastery learning in specific course content. Students choosing to earn high school credit through a credit flexibility option should first discuss this option with their teacher and small school counselor prior to completing an application. There are deadlines associated with Credit Flexibility. Information about Credit Flexibility can be found on the District s website the Ohio Department of Education s website and from the small school counselor. CREDIT REQUIRED FOR GRADE PLACEMENT ASSIGNED GRADE REQUIREMENTS 9 th Promotion from 8 th grade 10 th 5 credits 11 th 10 credits 12 th 15 credits Students are placed in their grade level at the beginning of each school year. Grade level changes are done only for eligible seniors at the end of the first semester. CREDIT SYSTEM Although most courses are year-long, students will earn final grades and credits each semester. These semester grades and credits will appear on the transcript. DUAL CREDIT Dual enrollment options enable a student to earn both high school and college credit during high school as a result of participating in a college course offered at the high school, at a college or university, or via distance learning. Examples of dual enrollment options are: PSEO, other dual enrollment agreements, Early College High School, and some College Tech Prep programs. 4

8 EDUCATIONAL OPTIONS FOR SUCCESS (EOS) Educational Options for Success (EOS) is a 50 minute period for any student who may benefit from additional academic assistance or academic enrichment. Any student with at least one grade below a C in any class, based on the previous semester s grades, may be assigned an EOS period. GRADE POINT AVERAGE AND CLASS RANK A student s high school grade point average (GPA) and class rank begins with grades earned for ninth grade credit and includes all subsequent work taken in high school. All grades are used to compute GPA unless a class is being repeated. Grades earned in Honors are enhanced one (1) grade point. AP classes are enhanced one (1) point if students take the AP exam. All others are not weighted. 9 INTERSCHOLASTIC ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS One of the primary goals of the Cleveland Heights-University Heights City School District is to assist in the total development of the individual. To achieve this end, the CH-UH school system offers not only a rigorous academic program to develop young minds, but also a varied and comprehensive array of extra-curricular activities to develop a well-rounded individual. To assure that the appropriate time and effort be spent in these areas, the Board Of Education has adopted a policy to determine a student s eligibility to participate in interscholastic extra-curricular activities. The activities governed by this eligibility policy are any extra-curricular, school-sponsored programs in which students participate in or assist with the management of such activities. Please check for the most current listing at the beginning of the school year. Specific academic criteria will determine a student s FULL ELIGIBILITY STATUS to join an interscholastic extra-curricular activity. Those failing to achieve Full Eligibility Status may participate on CONDITIONAL ELIGIBILITY STATUS by meeting a combination of academic and conduct expectations on a weekly basis. Requirements for FULL ELIGIBILITY STATUS A student must maintain a 2.0 Grade Point Average (G.P.A.). A student cannot receive more than one (1) F at the conclusion of a grading period, regardless of GPA. Also, an incomplete (I) will be treated as a failing grade until the work has been completed. Summer School grades earned may not be used to substitute for failing grades from the last grading period of the regular school year. A student must have been enrolled in school the immediately preceding grading period and passed subjects that earn a minimum of 5.0 credits (2.5 credits per semester) towards graduation. A student enrolled in the first grading period after advancement from the eighth grade must meet Full Eligibility Status as established for Middle Schools. An exemption from the GPA may be made for students receiving special education services if the student s individualized education program (IEP) indicates an exemption is advisable. Requirements for CONDITIONAL ELIGIBILITY STATUS Students below a 2.0 GPA are ineligible; however, they may apply for and receive Conditional Eligibility Status during the following quarter if they meet all other standards for Full Eligibility Status. Conditional Eligibility must be sought jointly by the parent/guardian and student. Both will attend an evening meeting with the appropriate school administrator or advisor/coach before the start of the activity. Both the parent/guardian and the student must sign the joint Conditional Eligibility Contract before eligibility is established. Conditional Eligibility includes a weekly check of eligibility by the advisor/coach. An Academic Progress Report must be signed by each classroom teacher every Friday indicating the student s academic standing for the week. Any student failing to turn in their Academic Progress Report properly signed will automatically be ineligible for the next week. A student receiving one (1) or more F s at anytime during the weekly grading period will automatically be ineligible for the next week. Students not adhering to the Conditional Eligibility Status requirements automatically forfeit eligibility. 6

10 NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY The purpose of the National Honor Society (NHS) is to acknowledge the accomplishments of high school juniors and seniors who excel in the areas of scholarship, leadership, service, and character. The scholastic requirement for all students in NHS is a Grade Point Average of at least 3.5. Each winter, students who meet the GPA requirement are invited to an organizational meeting in which they receive criteria for admission. A program is held each Spring to induct new members. Please see the National Honor Society advisor for additional information. NATIONAL TECHNICAL HONOR SOCIETY The National Technical Honor Society (NTHS) was founded in 1984 to reward excellence in career and technical education. The organization seeks students who exhibit qualities of skilled workmanship, honesty, scholastic achievement, leadership, citizenship, and responsibility. Students considered for this honor must have a 3.5 GPA in their technical class with an overall GPA of 3.0. Each spring, students who qualify for admission to NTHS are invited to an organizational meeting where they receive criteria for admission. Induction ceremonies are held annually during the second semester. For further information, contact the NTHS advisor. NCAA INITIAL ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS Many college athletic programs are regulated by the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), an organization founded in 1906 that has established rules on eligibility, recruiting and financial aid. Students who wish to participate in Division I or II athletics, must be certified by the NCAA Eligibility Center (formerly known as The Clearinghouse). NCAA rules stipulate that only college preparatory, honors and Advanced Placement courses will count toward initial eligibility for college athletes. A 2.0 grade point average in core courses is required. Contact the Athletic Director or School Counselor for Eligibility Center certification questions. 11 OHIO GRADUATION TEST Every student must pass all sections of the Ohio Graduation Test (OGT). The OGT contains subtests in Writing, Reading, Mathematics, Citizenship, and Science and contains multiple choice, short answer, and extended response questions. OPPORTUNITY LABS & ONLINE LEARNING The District established Opportunity Labs for online coursework at the high school. The labs offer opportunities for credit recovery, credit flexibility and placement for students with special circumstances. Students are referred to the Opportunity Labs by the school counselors. Students choosing to earn high school credit through an opportunity lab should first discuss this option with small school counselor and complete an application. Students must have a laptop in order to participate in an Opportunity Lab. POST HIGH SCHOOL PLANNING CAREER RESOURCE CENTER The Career Resource Center is open to all students. The materials available include college applications, catalogs and brochures, trade and technical school information, occupation and career files, career resources materials, and armed services information. Students may also gather extensive information from the Ohio Career Information System (OCIS). COLLEGE CONFERENCES Students have the opportunity to meet with college admissions personnel during the school day. This should be done during lunchtime. If lunchtime cannot be used, students must pick up a permission slip from the Career Resource Center to receive permission from the class teacher to attend. The class teacher may or may not excuse students. Upcoming college conferences are announced daily via announcements and are posted on the bulletin board outside the Career Resource Center. COLLEGE ENTRANCE TESTS Students need to consult with their counselor each year about college entrance tests they need to take. Most colleges require either the SAT or ACT. Please note that: 1. Cleveland Heights High School is a National Test center for ADVANCED PLACEMENT EXAMS, ACT, PSAT, SAT REASONING TEST, and SAT SUBJECT TESTS. 2. Fees are charged by the testing agencies for all tests. 3. Test center dates are posted in the Career Resource Center and are announced via daily via daily announcements. Tests requirements vary among colleges/universities. Students should consult their school counselors with regards to the appropriate test(s) to take. Test registration materials are located in the Career Resource Center. ACT - We encourage 11 th graders to take the ACT in the spring (June) and, if necessary, repeat it again in the fall of the 12 th grade (October or December). Students should take the optional writing section. ADVANCED PLACEMENT EXAMS - These exams are offered each May. Students enrolled in AP courses are required to take the exam in the corresponding courses. PSAT - All 10 th and 11 th graders take the PSAT in October. Besides being a good practice session for the SAT, the results may qualify 11 th grade students for National Merit Scholarship, National Achievement Scholarship, and/or National Hispanic Scholar Award recognition. SAT: REASONING TEST -We encourage 11 th graders to take the SAT in the spring (May or June) and, if necessary, repeat it again in the fall of the 12 th grade (October or November). SAT: SUBJECT TESTS - Many highly selective schools require three SAT Subject Tests, either for selection criteria and/or academic placement. It is advisable to take SAT Subject Test for subjects that have been completed. 8

12 POST-SECONDARY ENROLLMENT OPTION (PSEO) The Post-Secondary Enrollment Option (PSEO) enables students in grades 9-12 to enroll part-time at a college, university, or post-secondary institution. Some of the area schools that participate in this program include Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland State University, and Cuyahoga Community College. All schools have their own individual admissions criteria. For more information, please contact your school counselor. The deadline for students to notify the school district of their intent to participate in the PSEO program for any portion of the school year is Thursday, March 28, REPEATING COURSES FOR IMPROVEMENT OF GRADES A student who wishes to repeat a course for the purpose of strengthening skills or improving a grade may do so if they under the following conditions: 1. Both grades will appear on the student's transcript; however, only the higher grade will be utilized in the computation of the student's grade point average (GPA). 2. The credit toward graduation will be counted only once. 3. All grades earned by a student will become a part of the student's permanent transcript record. 4. Students who receive a grade of Incomplete have six (6) school weeks to complete the work and 5. to submit it for a grade. Students who have not completed the work at the end of the six (6) weeks will receive a mark of F. **This replacement policy does not apply to PSEO courses. REPORT CARDS AND PROGRESS REPORTS Grades are issued at the end of every grading period. Teachers will send progress reports to parents of students who are earning "F's" at the mid-point of each grading period. Grades can be accessed online through Infinite Campus. Contact your guidance counselor for additional information. Credit is issued at the end of each semester regardless of whether the course is for a year or for a semester. The semester grade is final and will be recorded on the student's transcript. SCHEDULE CHANGES Schedule changes will be limited to corrections for: 1) data entry error; 2) missing prerequisites; 3) missing graduation requirements for seniors; 4) unbalanced schedule (i.e. both P.E. classes in the same semester); 5) failure in a required course, and 6) enrollment in a Post Secondary Enrollment Option. Schedules will be updated for students who earn additional credits in Summer School. These types of changes are to be completed within the first three (3) weeks of the school year. WAIVER If parents do not agree with a teacher s course or level recommendation, they should request a meeting with counseling and administrative staff. If the student meets the established prerequisites for the desired course or level, parents may sign a waiver form indicating their intent to have their child placed in a specific course or level. This may apply to courses in the following departments: English, Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, and World Languages. 9

22 Renaissance Cleveland Heights High School The goal of the Renaissance School is that every student who graduates possesses the knowledge, skills, and habits of mind necessary to succeed and contribute in the 21st Century global environment. Our mission is excellence and equity. The following is a profile of the attributes we strive to develop in each Renaissance high school graduate as they become globally competent students. Global competence starts by being aware, curious, and interested in learning about the world and how it works. Globally competent students ask and explore critical questions and researchable problems problems for which there may not be one right answer. Students will weigh perspectives and recognize that they have a particular viewpoint, that others may not share. They compare their perspective with others and construct a new point of view backed by local and international research. Renaissance students will communicate ideas and understand that audiences differ on the basis of culture, geography, faith, wealth, and other factors. They will effectively communicate, verbally and non-verbally, with diverse audiences. The Renaissance School of Humanities & International Studies will take action to make sure that our students go from learning about the world to making a difference in the world. Students will apply disciplinary and interdisciplinary expertise, making our students competent and lifelong learners. Students will be able to adapt and contribute knowledge and understanding to a world that is rapidly evolving, and to think like historians, scientist, and artists by using the tools and methods of inquiry of the various disciplines. 19
