8 INTRODUCTION Volume 1: Academic Programs, Enrollment, and Graduates summarizes information gathered by the American Dental Association's (ADA) annual Survey of Dental Education for The purpose of this report is to present information from dental schools regarding academic programs, admissions, enrollment, attrition, graduates, educational expenses and financial assistance, patient care, advanced dental education and faculty positions. Requests to complete the Survey of Dental Education were sent to all 58 United States dental schools and ten Canadian dental schools in August Responses to Group I, Group II, Group III, and the Critical Sheet portions of the survey were provided electronically. All U.S. schools were required to complete the survey in order to maintain accreditation by the Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA). The survey instrument used in this project consists of four sections 1, with each section focused on a particular aspect of the dental school. Group I queries general information, including facilities, admissions, faculty and patient care. Group II pertains to student information, including enrollment by academic year and by race/ethnicity, citizenship, the number of graduates by race/ethnicity, tuition and financial aid. Group III solicits detailed information about revenue by source and expenditures by functional categories. Group IV, conducted in alternate years, asks for details on clock hours and curriculum offered. Data gathered in Groups I and II are used in this volume. In addition to the data obtained by the Survey of Dental Education, Volume 1 also contains some information gathered by other surveys. The American Dental Education Association (ADEA) supplied additional faculty data compiled from their annual Survey of Dental Educators and other information. Details about advanced education programs are taken from the ADA's annual Survey of Advanced Dental Education. For more information about the latter report, please contact the Survey Center. Survey Center reports are available for purchase from the ADA Catalog Service by calling or visiting online at (reports listed under Survey and Economic Research on Dentistry). The latest copies of each dental education report are available at Together, the four sections of the survey are presented in a five-volume series of reports available from the ADA Survey Center individually or as a set. Volume 2 covers tuition, admissions policies and attrition. Volume 3 provides information on dental school faculty and support staff 2. Volume 4, produced in alternate years, reports clock hours of classroom instruction and laboratory experience by major teaching area and type of instruction. Volume 5 provides financial information, including detailed information on revenue and expenditures at U.S. dental schools by category. Because each report serves as a summary, not all the data compiled from the survey are included in the reports. CODA utilizes the data during the annual accreditation process. The information collected is also useful to dental school administrators, the ADA Board of Trustees and Council on Dental Education and Licensure, and potential dental school applicants. 1 Note that the Group IV-Curriculum section of the survey is conducted in alternate years. The survey did not include the Group IV- Curriculum section. 2 This report is on hiatus for the report year, due to lack of faculty data from the American Dental Education Association.

12 ACADEMIC PROGRAMS Of the 58 dental schools operating in the United States in , 24 awarded a D.M.D. (Doctor of Dental Medicine) and 34 granted a D.D.S. (Doctor of Dental Surgery) degree. The source of financial support for each school is described according to one of the three following classifications: 1 public, private or private-state related. Thirty-seven dental schools in the United States (63.8%) were classified as public, 17 as private (29.3%) and four as private-state related (6.9%). (See Figure 1.) All Canadian dental schools were classified as public except for one, which was classified as private-province related. The number of schools and their classification has not changed significantly in the past decade. During the school year, there were 55 dental schools in the United States, of which 36 (65.5%) were classified as public, 14 (25.5%) as private and five (9.1%) as private-state related. Figure 1: Classification of United States Dental Schools, Private-State Related Schools 6.9% Private Schools 29.3% Public Schools 63.8% Source: American Dental Association, Survey Center, Survey of Dental Education. (Group I, Question 9). Table 2 on the next page provides a description of the academic programs of the dental schools in the United States and Canada. Data in the table present information on the type and length of the term, the minimum and maximum length of the academic year and the total length of the program expressed in numbers of weeks required. A description of the type of academic program (whether or not the academic year is equal to the calendar year) at each dental school is also included. During the academic year there were 57 dental schools in the United States that had a four academic year-four calendar year (4-4) program. The University of the Pacific had a four academic year-three calendar year (4-3). All responding Canadian dental schools had four academic year-four calendar year programs, except for Universite de Montreal, which had a five academic year-five calendar year program. 1 Refer to Glossary for definitions. 5

14 COMPARISON OF EXAMINED APPLICATIONS 1, APPLICANTS, AND FIRST-YEAR ENROLLMENT By utilizing applicant data from the American Dental Education Association (ADEA), it is possible to compare examined applications, applicants, and enrollment in dental schools. Table 3 presents, for the past ten academic years, the total number of applications examined by dental schools, the number of individual applicants, the ratio of examined applications to applicants, the total first-year enrollment, and the ratio of applicants to first-year enrollment. Between the and school years, the number of applicants to United States dental schools decreased from 7,770 to 7,412, but then increased each year to 13,742 by , before leveling off to 12,202 in Between and , first-year enrollment increased by 17.6% from 4,327 to 5,089. In addition, the average number of examined applications per applicant decreased from 6.74 for the academic year to a low of 3.25 in , then increased each year after, reaching 4.72 in The ratio of applicants to first-year enrollment decreased from 1.80 in to 1.68 in , then increased each year to a high of 2.88 by , before dropping to 2.40 in The sharp drop in number of applications between and , as well as the ratio of examined applications to applicants, should be viewed with caution, as it reflects a change in the way the question was asked starting in the survey. This figure represents the total number of applications examined by all dental schools, and counts applicants more than once if they applied to multiple programs. 2 There was a change in the way this information was collected starting with the school year. Until , a single question was asked, How many applicants (defined as an individual whose credentials were complete and examined by an admissions committee) applied for admission to the current first year class? Please report only the applicants whose credentials were complete and examined by an admissions committee. The question was divided in two parts in ; the numbers presented are from Question 7b of the Group II section of the survey. Please refer to Appendix B to see the modified question. 7

15 ADMISSIONS 1 As illustrated in Figure 2 and detailed in Tables 4 and 5 (pages 9 and 10), the number of dental school examined applications has varied considerably in the past ten academic years. The number of examined applications decreased from 52,354 in to 28,782 by , increased in the following years to 57,634 in (The sharp drop between and should be viewed with caution, however, as it reflects a change in the way the question was asked starting in the survey.) The highest percentage of applications (48.2%) came from white applicants, followed by Asian (33.0%), Hispanic (5.0%) and Black (4.1%). Less than one percent of applicants were American Indian in ethnicity (0.4%), and race/ethnicity was not specified for 9.4% of applicants. 1 For more information on admissions and incoming students at United States and Canadian dental schools, please see the Survey of Dental Education Volume 2: Tuition, Admission, and Attrition report, available for purchase from the ADA. In Canadian dental schools, a somewhat different picture of first-year students is evident, as shown in Table 7. About forty-five percent (45.5%) of first-year students entered Canadian dental schools with a Bachelor s degree as their highest award, and about a third (32.9%) had two or three years of predental education. 14
