2 Dental School Admissions Overview: DMD-Doctor of Dental Medicine and DDS- Doctor of Dental Surgery Admission Enrollment rate : 12,100 applied, 4,794 were enrolled: 39% of applicants matriculated Whole application review; DAT, GPA, LORs, Interviews Most schools require at least two to three years of UG courses, but most applicants have completed BA degree PREPARING: Requirements Vary by School- reference ADEA Official Guide to Dental Schools One Year Biology GChem OChem Inorganic Chem Physics College Year 1 Fall Semester- Meet with Pre Health Advisor, choose courses Spring Semester- Volunteer or employment opportunities for the summer (shadowing or clinic work) Summer- internship or volunteer program OR some summer school for pre-requisites College Year 2 Fall Semester- Meet with Pre Health Advisor, attend Pre Health Activities (Pre-Dental Society?), choose courses, and begin to find a community service opportunity that you will continue throughout rest of UG Spring Semester-paid or volunteer dental related research opportunities, complete courses and register for fall Summer-Summer Research or Volunteer dental related program OR some summer school for pre-requisites, begin DAT preparation!!!

3 College Year 3 Fall Semester-Meet with Pre Health Advisor to check course completion progress, Discuss Dental Schools (look at individual school pre-requisites), visit ADEA website at to familiarize with application process, Research Schools, purchase ADEA Official Guide to Dental Schools. Spring Semester-Review requirements, Identify LOR letter writers, take the DAT late spring or early summer (recommended), Prepare to submit application ~May 15 becomes available, register for fall courses, Schedule voluntary or paid dental related activity Summer-Take DAT if not done so already, prepare for Interviews, attend summer school if needed, prepare financially for interviewing and monitoring application, continue to participate in volunteer or paid opportunities. College Year 4 Fall Semester-Meet with Pre Health Advisor and complete coursework, attend Interviews, notifications of acceptances begins December 1 Spring Semester-Apply for federal financial aid Summer-Prepare for Dental School, moving, etc. DAT Take DAT (or CDAT- for Canadian Schools), Take at least one year before matriculating, maximum of three times!!! Half day, multiple choice exam, given by Prometric Testing Centers almost any day of the year, four hours and 15 minutes long. $205, List of testing centers is located online at htm, candidate has 12 months to register and take the exam. Candidates should have completed prerequisite courses in Biology, G Chem, O Chem.

4 APPLICATION: Submission beginning ~May 15th Submit an application to AADSAS, all but three dental schools participate in this service, deadlines vary- the complete application is due by the deadline, rolling admissions submitting early is recommended. Biographical Information Colleges/Universities attended Coursework completed and planned prior to enrollment in dental school DAT scores if available Personal Statement (4500 characters) Experiences related to dental profession, extracurriculars, volunteer, and community service, honors, awards, scholarships, work and research. Designate which Dental Schools to submit to Official Transcripts- also need to submit transcripts from each college/university you have attended to the AADSAS Verification Department. Also you need Official transcripts send directly from the Registrar of each school, provide the Transcript Matching form for each LORs-AADSAS accepts and distributes LORs. Recommend Letters are uploaded After Submitting the Application: Check with each school to familiarize with their process, may be asked to pay additional fees etc. Log onto ADEA AADSAS account to monitor the status of application while it is being process and beyond Update any changes of address/contact information Most schools fill their class by December of the year prior to matriculation

Services include prevention education, a food bank, professional dental care, housing assistance, mental health counseling, women s services and case management. APLA is a leader in the provision of bilingual HIV treatment information, in print and on the Internet, and advocates for effective AIDS-related policies and legislation on the local, state and federal level. Director, USC Mobile Clinic Norris Dental Science Center University Park, Los Angeles CA The USC Mobile Clinic program is an important resource in addressing the oral health needs of children from urban and rural low-income families in California, as well as a valuable educational resource for dental and dental hygiene students from UCLA and students from all of the dental hygiene and dental assistant programs in Southern California. A variety of volunteers, including family members, pre-dental students, and dental assisting students join USC students and assist them with patient flow, record keeping and sterilization of instruments. SUMMER OR AFTER GRADUATION The Berkeley Free Clinic (510) or (800) 6-CLINIC 2339 Durant Ave. Berkeley, CA info@berkeleyfreeclinic.org Almost all services at the Berkeley Free Clinic are provided by volunteers who have been trained at the clinic or by volunteer professionals. Each year, an estimated 180 people donate approximately 31,000 volunteer hours doing direct client service administration, fundraising, building maintenance, conducting trainings, and more. No previous medical experience is necessary to volunteer and become a member of the Clinic. Requirements do include a commitment to the struggle for free, accessible healthcare and health education, to community empowerment and unification, and to eliminating racism, sexism, classism, and homophobia. In most cases, volunteers are asked to make a minimum one-year commitment following training.

7 University of Connecticut: College Summer Fellowship Program (860) Summer Fellowship Program UConn School of Medicine Student Services Center Room AG Farmington Avenue Farmington, CT Contact: Robin Walsh The purpose of the program is to provide a research enrichment experience and some exposure to clinical medicine or dental medicine. The faculty develop and make available suitable project descriptions from which students may select a research opportunity. The student will meet with the faculty sponsor and develop a research protocol in June. The student will commit approximately 30+ hours per week for the project and will work with the faculty sponsor or his/her designates. Approximately 8-10 hours per week have been set aside for clinical experientials and other enrichments. A $2,500-3,000 salary is provided. Assistance in locating housing is also provided.
