6 "~XVIII. Erllca minima e rtlbro [,{ca. The T;Jlonn eating the Sugar Canes. )i This is Dot over one third of an Inch long, and not fa thick as a t'-lens Qui11, reddiih brown of Colour. It is convey'd in at firft by a round Hole made in the green Sugar Cane, and thence makes a two or three Inches long, rounel, red Cavity the length of the Cane whence when per feet: it comes out. It is in Probability a Sort of a Buttedly, Moth, Beetle or WeevilI, which ihrufl:s in the Egg, tben 'tis hatch'd and feeds on this Cane till it be 'ready to be turn'd to an Aurelia, whence it comes out and leaves a greyilli Skin which I have often found in the Canes fo fpoil'd. The Canes fa eaten are not fit to make Sugar, and therefore are ground to make Rum, or given to the Hogs to feed on. Sometimes Arm eat into the Canes, and ha ve their Young in them. 7 This work is dedicated in gratitude to DR. F. X. WILLIAMS Entomologist of the Experimental Station of the Hawaiian Sugar Planters' Association and Author of the incomparable HANDBOOK OF THE INSECTS AND OTHER INVERTEBRATES OF HAWAIIAN SUGAR CANE FIELDS who, just thirty years ago, when staying at Plantation Blairmont, Berbice, British Guiana, inspired a very young entomologist to take a serious interest in the Insects associated with the Sugar-cane. 9 INTIWDUCTION THIS List has been prepared with the object of bringing together in a convenient form all avaihlble records of sug Ll'-Cane insects, their parasites [lud insect predators, and also that it may serve as a working index to the names used in the litemture of sugar-cane entolilology_ Special attentioll has therefore been given to the varions altcrnative generic and triviallhlmes (not necessarily :>Yllonyms), including en'oneollk names, under which each insect Ims been recordecl. The name ultiumtely selected for a species is intended to conform fls far as possible with the most recent tltxonomic works, aud to further thir end the opinions have frequently been sought of recognised authoritic8, who lmve most obligingly checked fmc! revised the nomenclature ill their l'erpecti\~c grolll's, The greatest. mtl'c has heon taken to a.void final reference to [l speciei': by IllOl'C thrm one llmne, nihl t.he Ol'oss-J.'derencoR shonld olutble any Rpeeies readily to be traceclulldor any of t.ho nn.mer which have been applied t.o it as 11 imgarcalle insdct, flo that furt.her infol'nmtion concerning it may be obtrtined from the appropriatc sonrce,,' in the litcrn.tuj.'e. 10 a:-;xocintion with it that, they may be disregarded. Indeed, some mo(lc!'ll checklists of sugar-cane insects have included a considerable nnmber of specim; with no olaim whatever for inclusion other than that specimens were collected perching on the foliage or happened to have been observed in a field of sugar-cane. Nevertheless, due consideration has been given to each sel)arate case before a recorded sugar-cane insect has been finally rejected from the prehent List, and in the majoril;y of cases the rejection has been made after consultation with the local entomologists best able to decide. Part I of the List presents the sugar-cane int';ects of the world and Part II their parasites and insect predators. The sequence of orders and families in both pa,rts follows in the nmill that adopted ill. the latp:-;t. volulllc:'; of the Zoological Record, part Insecta. Genera are arranged in a.1phabctieal order, dthin each family awl the trivial Hallles ill alplmbetical order wit.hill each genus. The ThYHH.lloptel'a, IsopterH and the smaller orders are not classified into families. SVllOllYIl1S, erroneous name8. and names not ill currcnt w;e, are given in braeket".. 0 Particular care has been given to the names of countries; with fr."w exceptions these are in accordance with The O:tford Atlas (Oxford University Press, Hl51), and are arranged in the following geographiclll order: Africa, Asia., AU8tralasia.. Oceania, America, genemlly from west to ea"t in the Old 'World and from north to south in the New World. The Index to Countries provides a ready mealls for the compilation of loca'! lists for indidduaj and neighbonrillg territories. Records llot published to the uate of i88110 of this List (1,1'(1 indica.ted by the sign: t. \Vhere no ot,her person i~ indicated, the present writei' i~ responsible for the record in the count.ry named. While, as stated above, every effort has been matle to make this List Rccnrate and complete, it is hoped to publish witahle supplellelltll from time to time, as ncw records or changes in nomenclature may require.

11 ACKNOWLEDGEMEN'!'S This work would not have been possible without the aid of those who have given generously of their time to collaborate in its prepal'l1tioll., lwd the compiler is under a very deep obligation to the distinguihhed entomologists named below for their unfailing response in checking and revising either systematic lists concel'lling special groups or r,_jgional lists of sugar-cane insects which were sent to them, as well as for other help,. Van Zwaluweuburg, Entomologist of the Experiment Station of the Hawaiian Sugar Planters' Association, deserves very special mention for giving unsparingly of his time to answer innumerable enquiries, aside from his personal contributions to this List. It is also through his efforts, and those of Mr. R. Urata, of the Staff of tho same Experiment Station, that a translation was made available to tho writer of the indispensable eatalogue of the sugar-cane insects of, by Shuzo Takano and Masayuki Yanagihara, published (in Japanese) in 1939, which colltains nearly 250 separate records. It would be ungrl'tteful not to place on record the help that the writer has derived from a study of the magnificent work, recently published in two volumes, Die Plagen van den Cultunryewassen in indonesie., by Professor L. G. E. Kalshoven of Amsterdam, which because of its up-to-date nomenclature and the care given in citing references, has been of the utmost aid to an understanding of the sugar-cane insects of Java and adjacent territories. 3

12 At the Imperial College of Tropical Agriculture, Trinidad, Mr. R. G. Fennah has been particularly helpful in checking the large number of records (more than 200) of Fulgoroidea and Cercopidae, many of which were previously unidentified; he has also contributed several other records that would otherwise have escaped notice. Miss M. E. M. Price, Chief Librarian at the College, and her Stafl', have rendered much assistance in the search for literature. Neither must be forgotten the invaluable help given by Dr. 'V. J. Hall, C.M.G., Director, and Dr. T. H. C. Taylor, Assistant Director, of the Commonwealth Institute of Entomology, in dealing with the very considerable correspondence relating to this List, and by the Editorial and Library Staffs of the Institute, in particular Miss R. M. Davenport, for the care given to its production. To all of the above the writer acknowledges his indebtedness for their kind assistance and takes this opportunity to express his most sincere thanks. 4

The second column names the countries where the insect has beon recorded or o bserved on sugar-cane, but does not lleeesl-iarij:1l indicate the full geographioal distribution of the species. The third column records the para~ites fmel prechttol's by genera, 0111.'/.
