8 معلومات حول الجمھورية اللبنانية COUNTRY DESCRIPTION : LEBANESE REPUBLIC General Overview Country name: Lebanon Capital name: Beirut Population: about 4 million people Surface: Km2 Location: Lebanon is situated on the Mediterranean Sea. It has a north-eastern border with the Syrian Arab Republic and southern border with occupied Palestine and a coastline on the Mediterranean Sea in the west. Main Cities Beirut, Sour, Saida, Jounieh, Jbeil, Tripoli, Zahlé, Baalbeck. Climate 4 seasons: summer, autumn, winter, and spring. The temperature varies from -4 C to 34 C: snowy in winter, hot in summer.

9 Households Households of wealthy families are big houses or villas. They often hire more than one Migrant Domestic Worker. Households of middle class families are smaller (flats, houses in village). They only hire one Migrant Domestic Worker. Most of the families have two houses, one in the city and one in the village. Houses in Lebanon are built from stone and marble and are composed of several rooms (entrance, living room, kitchen, bathroom, bedrooms, laundry, balconies and rooftop). Some have a garage and a garden. Religion Religion is important in Lebanon where there is respect of freedom of religion. There are 18 sects present in Lebanon. In Christian families, you will go to the church to participate at the mass with the family. Sunday is the day for prayer. In Muslim families, Friday is the day for prayer at the mosque. You may be asked to wear a veil, as other women outside the house. Usually, men don t shake hands. If a Migrant Domestic Worker wants to participate in her/his community prayers, she/he can coordinate with her/his employer because there are special places for each community listed in the directorate at the end of this booklet.

10 Family Men are the workers on whom the family depends. They don t participate in the household work. Women are responsible for the household and children, in addition to their job outside the home. Children stay with their parents till they get married. The grandparents could take care of their grandchildren while their parents are at work. All family members are close and there are always gatherings on different occasions and non-formal exchanging visits and without any appointment. Working conditions Babysitting; Cooking; Ironing; Wiping dust; Mopping the floor; Cleaning carpets,floors, windows Cleaning the fridge, the stove; Arranging the kitchen tools; Washing clothes; Hanging clothes on the balcony; Taking care of elderly; Taking care of sick people; Opening the door to guests; Answering the phone; Wear proper shoes to avoid slipping Do not stay in wet clothes too long. Try to change into something dry to avoid getting sick; Be careful while cleaning windows inside & outside, if you do not pay attention, you could fall; Be careful while you are on rooftops from falling, don t approach the edge; Sleeping in your own room is not always possible, but you have a place reserved for you.

11 Communication with the family By using the telephone at home; Mobile phone; Sending letters by post; Through the Internet; Going to Central for international calls; Phone booths, you can buy a card for about LBP=10USD. 12 Business Hours Shops and businesses are open Monday through Saturday, 9:00-18:00. Banking hours are, Monday through Saturday, 8:30-12:30. Working hours for government offices and post offices are 8:00-14:00. Although all banks, government offices and schools are closed on Sunday and on holidays. Lebanese Pound (lira) Lebanese Currency: 1500 LBP =1 USD Lebanese pounds (Lira) are found in denominations of , 50000, 20000, 10000, 5000, 1000 and Coins are found in denominations of 500 and 250. You can also get your salary in US dollars LBP =100 USD Sending money back home via It is trustworthy, follows the instructions, and delivers to your family: Western Union, Money Gram (The cost for money transfer depends on the destination country, in general, it will cost about 10 USD for each 100 USD). Bank transfers. Local Transportation Personal vehicle (with the employer) Service: 2000 LBP in one city. Every Service or Taxi should have a red plate number, with a Taxi sign. Bus: 1000 LBP in Beirut, Others 1500 or 2000 LBP. Private Taxi: depending on the distance.

13 Tips for Transportation Familiarize yourself with the area where you live.know the names of the area close to the house (it could be a shop, a museum, a building, the ministry of, a cinema, etc.). Carry the address and phone number of your employer in Arabic and English, in case of asking for directions is needed. Cultural Practices In Lebanon, people may sometimes speak with a loud voice but this does not always mean that they are angry with you or don t like you. They just communicate in a different way from what you may be used to. People may also speak at the same time. And you may receive many different instructions from different members of the family. When this happens, ask your employer to kindly tell you what should be done first. They use most of the time signs to express their feelings and using hands.some words are used commonly like habibi, habibti, it is used in a normal conversation not for sexual harassment, it is only words. They often say NO by raising their eyebrows, shaking their head from one side to the other or raising it high. It is quite common for people in Lebanon to entertain a large number of guests till late hours of the night in their homes. Your employer may ask you to work in the evening or on weekends.

14 Social manners and conduct Clothing: you could be asked to wear a veil in a Muslim family. It is common for Domestic Workers to wear a uniform that is given by the employer. Going out: it is not secure for women to go out at night without a male companion When you talk to men, there may be misunderstanding because of cultural differences. You should be careful about how men talk to women in Lebanon so that you will not be misunderstood. Marriage and Celebrations Arranged marriages are rare, although they still exist. Polygamy is legal among Muslims even though it is rarely practiced. Lebanese weddings can last for up to three consecutive days. Death Generally the funerals are extended. Women wear black for one year to express their grief. All religions focus on life after death, which they often counsel to have a just and fair life in order to be able to merit the afterlife.

Il a une frontière nord-est avec la République arabe syrienne et la frontière sud avec la Palestine occupée et un littoral sur la Mer Méditerranée à l'ouest. Villes principales : Beyrouth, Sour, Saida, Jounieh, Jbeil, Tripoli, Zahlé, Baalbeck Climat : 4 saisons: été, automne, hiver et printemps. La température varie de -4 C à 34 C: neigeux en hiver, chaud en été. Les maisons libanaises : Les maisons de familles riches sont des grands appartements ou des villas. Ils embauchent souvent plus d une travailleuse domestique migrante. Les maisons de familles du classe moyenne sont plus petits (appartements, maisons dans le village). Ils n embauchent qu une travailleuse domestique migrante. La plupart des familles ont deux maisons, une dans la ville et un dans le village. Les maisons au Liban sont construites en pierre et en marbre et sont composées de plusieurs pièces (entrée, salle de séjour, cuisine, salle de bains, chambres à coucher, buanderie, balcons et le toit de la maison). Certaines ont un garage et un jardin.

17 Religion La religion est importante au Liban où il ya le respect de la liberté de religion. Il ya 18 sectes présentes au Liban. Dans les familles chrétiennes, vous irez à l'église pour participer à la messe avec la famille de l employeur. Le dimanche est le jour pour la prière. Dans les familles musulmanes, le vendredi est le jour pour la prière à la mosquée. Vous pouvez être invité à porter un voile, comme les autres femmes de cette famille en dehors de la maison. Habituellement, les hommes ne serrent pas la main. Si un travailleuse domestique migrante souhaite participer avec sa communauté, elle peut arranger avec son employeur parce qu'il ya des endroits spéciaux pour chaque communauté énumérés dans le repertoire des services à la fin de ce bouquin. Famille La société est patriarcale. Les hommes sont les chefs de famille et fournisseurs de l argent. Ils ne participent pas aux travaux ménagers. Les femmes sont responsables pour le ménage de la maison et les enfants, en plus de leur travail hors du foyer. Les enfants restent avec leurs parents jusqu'à ce qu'ils se marient. Les grands-parents pouvaient prendre soin de leurs petits-enfants pendant que leurs parents sont au travail.

18 Les tâches de travail et les conditions pour sauvegarder votre état de santé : Cuisiner; repassage des habits; Essuyage de la poussière; nettoyer les surfaces; Nettoyage des tapis, fenêtres... Laver la vaisselle Nettoyage du réfrigérateur, la cuisinière; Organiser les ustensiles de cuisine; Laver les vêtements dans la machine à laver; accrocher le linge sur le balcon; Prendre soins des enfants (babysitting); Prendre soin des personnes âgées; Prendre soin des personnes malades; Ouvrir la porte aux invités; Répondre au téléphone; Porter des chaussures appropriées pour éviter de glisser et de tomber; Ne pas rester dans des vêtements mouillés trop longtemps. Les changer par des habits secs pour éviter de tomber malade; Soyez prudent lors du nettoyage intérieur et extérieur des fenêtres, si vous ne faites pas attention, vous risquez de tomber; Soyez prudent lorsque vous êtes sur les toits, ne vous approchez pas du bord pour ne pas tomber; Dormir dans votre propre chambre n'est pas toujours possible, mais vous avez une place réservée pour vous.

21 Heures de travail de ces lieux cités ci-dessous : Les magasins et les marchés sont ouverts du lundi au samedi, 09:00-18:00 Les banques sont ouvertes du lundi au samedi, 08:30-12:30 Les heures de travail pour les bureaux du gouvernement et les bureaux de poste sont ouvertes du Lundi au Samedi 08:00-14:00 Bien que tous les bureaux des banques publiques et les écoles ferment leurs portes les dimanches et les jours fériés. Livres libanaises (lira): Devises libanais: 1500 LBP = 1 USD Livres libanaises (Lira) se trouvent des billets de , 50000, 20000, 10000, 5000, 1000 et les pièces de 500 et 250. Vous pouvez également obtenir votre salaire en dollars américains LBP = 100 $ US. Transfert de l'argent à votre pays via une personne digne de confiance et qui suit les instructions pour les livrer à votre famille directement. Le Western Union, Money Gram (Le coût de transfert d'argent dépend du pays de destination, en général, il vous en coûtera environ 10 USD pour chaque 100 USD). Bus: 1000 LBP à Beyrouth, d'autres 1500 ou 2000 LBP. Taxi privé: selon la distance. Conseils pour les transports Familiarisez-vous avec la région où vous habitez. Connaître les noms de la zone proche de la maison (ca pourrait être une boutique, un musée, un bâtiment, le ministère de..., un cinéma, etc.) Memoriser l'adresse et le numéro de téléphone de votre employeur, en arabe et en anglais, en cas vous demander des directions pour y retourner.

24 Pratiques culturelles Au Liban, les gens peuvent parfois parler à haute voix, mais cela ne signifie pas toujours qu'ils sont en colère contre vous ou ne vous aiment pas. Ils ont juste une manière différente de communication que chez vous. Les gens peuvent aussi parler en même temps. Et vous pouvez recevoir plusieurs demandes de différents membres de la famille. Lorsque cela arrive, demandez à votre employeur de bien vouloir vous dire ce qui devrait être fait en premier. Les libanais utilisent la plupart du temps des signes pour exprimer leurs sentiments et les gestes des mains. Certains mots sont utilisés couramment comme "habibi", "Habibti", il est utilisé dans une conversation normale n'est pas pour vous harceler, ils sont seulements des mots. Ils disent souvent «non» en levant les sourcils, en secouant la tête d'un côté à l'autre ou élever bien haut. Il est assez commun pour les personnes au Liban d inviter dans leurs maisons un grand nombre de gens et les avoir jusqu'au tard la nuit. Votre employeur peut vous demander de travailler le soir ou le week-end.

25 Coutumes sociales et attitudes Vêtements: on pourrait vous demander de porter le voile dans une famille musulmane. Il est commun pour les travailleuses domestiques migrantes de porter un uniforme qui est donné par l'employeur. Sortir: il n'est pas sécure pour les femmes de sortir la nuit sans un compagnon masculin Quand vous parlez aux hommes, il peut y avoir confusion à cause des différences culturelles. Vous devriez faire attention sur la façon dont les hommes parlent aux femmes au Liban, pour prévenir entre vous les malentendus. Le mariage et célébrations Les mariages arrangés sont rares, bien qu'elles existent toujours. La polygamie est légale chez les musulmans, même si elle est rarement pratiquée. La célébration des mariages libanais peut durer jusqu'à trois jours consécutifs. Décès et Deuil En général, les funérailles sont étendues. Les femmes portent le noir pendant un an pour exprimer leur chagrin. Toutes les religions parlent de la vie après la mort, ce qui est souvent une raison pour avoir une vie juste et équitable afin d'être en mesure de mériter l'audelà.
