Hull began as a fishing and trading post, later becoming a resort for the rich and famous in the early 1890 s. Hull s popular beaches attract tens of thousands of visitors each summer. Hull has a year round population of approximately 10,000 which swells in the summer to 20,000. It s primary source of revenue is property tax and the median household income is $65,932. The isolated location fosters a great sense of pride among its residents. Hull High School, built on the tip of a peninsula, opened in Few schools can match our scenic setting with a 21 st century wind turbine at the edge of our football field, and the Boston skyline in the distance. The school has 329 students, grades 9 to 12, and is accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges. We were named a 2012 National Blue Ribbon School of Excellence. 80% of the students from the class of 2015 went on to study at a 4 or 2 year college. 2 Graduation Requirements In order to receive a Hull High School diploma, students must successfully meet all course credit requirements and pass the Massachusetts Comprehensive Assessment System (MCAS) tests with competency determinations as identified by the Massachusetts Department of Education. Requirements Level A Diploma Level B Diploma Minimum Credits** English 24 Credits 24 Credits Math 18 Credits, including Algebra I Algebra I Geometry Geometry Algebra II Algebra II Science 18 Credits, including Introduction to Physics Introduction to Physics Biology Biology Chemistry Social Studies World History II US History I US History I US History II US History II Government & Economics Government & Economics Wellness 12 Credits 12 Credits Additional Foreign Language (6 credits) Fine Arts (6 credits) Industrial Arts (6 credits) Internship (6 credits) **a year long course is the equivalent of 6 credits; a semester course 3 Curriculum Information Course levels include Advanced Placement (AP), Honors (H), and College Preparatory (CP). AP courses are offered in Biology, Calculus, English Language and Composition, English Literature and Composition, Environmental Science, and United States History. Additional Advanced Placement courses are available through the school s Virtual High School program. Honors level courses are available in all major academic areas including English, Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, and World Languages. Elective courses are available in Art, English, Music, Social Studies, Science, Technology, and World Languages. Please feel free to contact the Guidance Department or consult the Program of Studies located on the town s webpage ( Hull High School is a member of Virtual High School (VHS), which gives students the opportunity to take courses not otherwise offered at the high school. This is noted as Virtual High School on the student s official transcript. French classes are taught through Connections Academy in conjunction with Virtual High School. Grading System Hull High School operates on a two semester calendar year that includes four grading terms, plus mid-year and final exams. Senior grade reports are mailed to colleges after the first grading term in mid-november and again, after the first semester during the first weeks of February. The minimum passing grade is 60. The letter grades on transcripts and report cards are based on the numerical equivalents in the accompanying tables: A A B B B C C C D F Below 60 AF 59
3 Grade Point Averages GPA is based on weighted 4.0 system and includes all subjects except Academic Support, Strategies for Learning, and Internships. Summer school classes and courses taken outside of Hull High School are not factored into the weighted GPA. Rank is based on GPA. GPA Weighting Differential Grade CP H AP A A B B B C C C D F AF Attendance Policy and Credit Recovery Until 9/2014, students who were denied credit due to attendance had the opportunity to complete community service to regain credit. This is noted as Credit Recovery on the student s official transcript. Starting 9/2014,students who accrue more than four unexcused absences in a class for a term will receive a grade of AF ( Attendance Failure) for that term. Attendance Failures will be calculated as a 59 for purposes of averaging final grades for semester and full year courses. Students in a full year course, who receive an Attendance Failure for a single term, but meet the attendance requirements for the other three terms in the same school year, will have the Attendance Failure removed from their record. The original grade they earned in the course will be restored and used for averaging their final grade. Hull High School offers the following co-curricular activities: Art Club, Band, Chorus, Physics and Stuff, Drama, TALK (Diversity Awareness), Mock Trial, National Honors Society, Project Humanitarian Initiative, Class Officers, Student Council, SADD, and Yearbook.
