Reality is whatever he dreams of, manifesting instantly before him. Without integrity, reality is also whatever you think or feel or say, but there is an apparent time lag for its manifestation. From a higher dimensional level of existence every thought is instantly manifested into reality, and polarity is just an illusion. You have to see everything as a whole - complete and perfect and know that there is nothing wrong no matter how bad or how good it may seem. Unity is your very nature and you are the very reason for everything that happens. Everything you think, feel and do is creating your whole world up to the most distant stars... Architecture is the science that permits man to reveal his own integrity in built form, and an architect s highest responsibility is first to become whole as an individual in order to best carry out this mission, and then be of service to the world that he has created around himself. 3 Paolo Riani I try to teach my students first of all, a path of inner reflection that translates into understanding oneself and one s personal choices: the development of this educational process begins in these years, and since architecture is an art form, the process should continue for a lifetime. This is therefore a particularly critical and delicate phase for those who dedicate themselves to architecture, whether it be intended directly in the sense of designing, or in the broader sense of understanding all of the cultural and practical activities that are more or less involved in architecture and that constitute on different levels the various aspects of working as an architect, beginning with classical studies. The benefit of learning an appropriate language, a correct method of observing architecture is evident, which ever way one develops one s own personality, whatever may be the contribution the teaching offers and whatever experience may be acquired in any professional practice. For this reason it is necessary to determine a precise mental position, to ensure the formation of a general belief that corresponds to the activity of architecture and its final objectives. Each student will have his own path, his own particular way to be and to work according to his own capabilities, and each student, along a personal path will bring with lesser or greater degree the capacity of his own instinct and the strength of his own sense of ethics, which must belong to the practice of architecture, as much as to any human action in general. 4 COURSE PRESENTATION Paolo Riani Architect and Urban Planner Mr. Riani has lived all over the world leaving traces of his work. He has built projects in Tokyo, New York, Boston, Los Angeles, Moscow, Arabia Saudita and Italy. Associate professor at Columbia University, School of Architecture (1970/1974), Senator of the Italian Republic (1994/1997), Director of the Italian Cultural Institute in New York City (2000/2003), and professor in DESTEC at University of Pisa since 2004, Mr. Riani is also writer, photographer and author of various books on architecture and travel. Architecture is a complex art. It is a profession that balances between art and science, invention and memory, between the courage of modernity and the presence of tradition. Architecture encompasses science, geography, mathematics, anthropology, aesthetics as well as politics and the ethics of finance and business. Architecture is the most wonderful profession in the world because it is one of man s great adventures that is still possible. To make architecture is to create. To create we must look inside ourselves, look into the invisible, proceed into the uncharted territories that lead us to our future. The quality of that future depends on the ethics of our personal choices that are based on how much of the present we have absorbed within ourselves, according to our values and our morality. Paolo Riani, Architect You may have acquired some excellent abilities so far in design and planning, but do your ideas reflect you and say something about the environment you live in, about yourself? Many years ago, Thomas Jefferson, founder of one of the most prestigious universities in the United States, travelled to Italy not only to benefit from the architectural wonders of the Renaissance, but to live and breathe in the culture that created them. He was the forerunner of a trend that would carry on. He dreamed of a harmonious world and sought it externally, literally to the ends of the earth. The ESE Summer program is designed to give international students the opportunity to meet in a stimulating environment to learn and exchange new ideas. Both undergraduate and postgraduate students, as well as professionals in architecture can benefit from ESE s carefully guided instruction, and at the same time, from our prestigious location, excursions and guest speakers. This program was conceived by Kristin Sharpe inspired by the ideas of Elio D Anna and designed with the ESE Academic Team.

5 PROGRAM STRUCTURE MODULES OFFERED*: Concepts and Ethics: Architectural Practice in its Social Context Management and Professional Practice in Architecture Materials, Structures and Products *Course modules may be subject to change PROGRAM DURATION: 5 weeks TOTAL COURSE HOURS: 72 hours 5 workshops (Prominent contemporary architects will be invited as part of our Distinguished Speaker Series). Each module will meet for a total of 24 hours class and studio combined. which will assume the form of discussion groups. LANGUAGE OF INSTRUCTION: English ARCHITECTURAL EXCURSIONS Classroom learning will be supplemented by an intensive itinerary of excursions and on-site visits, in accordance with the School s philosophy to approach the subject matter from every aspect. These excursions will enable participants to use their time in Italy to the fullest extent. Students will have the opportunity to learn about the rich and varied native materials and products used in architecture, their characteristics and unique qualities. Visits will focus on local industries of excellence and the materials of major interest. Excursions will also allow architecture students to see influential works of historic and contemporary Italian architecture under the guidance of specialized tutors. Excursions trips will include * Visit to a Medieval town in Tuscany to study the relation between the medieval town and its territory. Visit to the Martinelli Luce Factory of lamps and lighting systems in Lucca. Martinelli Luce represents more than fifty years of history devoted to manufacturing of lamps and of lighting systems. Trip to the historic Galileo Chini (now Pecchioli) ceramic factory of Borgo San Lorenzo, known world-wide for its precious glazed ceramic tiles, and Vetri al Mare, known for its Maiolica. The marble quarries of Carrara and the surrounding exporters, cutters and artisans. The famous marble of Carrara has been quarried since Roman times and has long been a favorite of sculptors, including Michelangelo. *Excursions are subject to change MODE OF DELIVERY: Each module entails one 6-hour session per week for a total of 18 weekly hours (classes and studios combined) plus a workshop with prominent contemporary architect each week. Classes and workshops will be held regularly over a four-week period with final project presentations and testing sessions scheduled in the fifth week. Over the last week, interested students will be also presented with a series of lectures from ESE s own Integrity Seminars,

6 PROGRAM STRUCTURE Optional excursion: Trip to Selinunte (Sicily) in occasione of the annual International Architecture Summit Architects meet in Selinunte, organized by AIAC Italian Association of Architecture and Critique. Trip to Venice during the 2014 Architecture Biennale entitled Fundamentals directed by Rem Koolhaas, Dutch architect, architectural theorist, and Professor at Harvard University. An opportunity to be in contact with the best of contemporary architecture in the world within the frame of Italy s most enchanting city: Venice. ARCHITECTS MEET IN SELINUNTE In the second weekend of the Summer Program, students will have the option to visit the ancient temples of Selinunte, Sicily, as part of the annual International Architecture Summit Architects meet in Selinunte, organized by AIAC Italian Association of Architecture and Critique. Professor Luigi Prestinenza Puglisi, President of AIAC will dedicate a special section of the event to The Economics of Architecture Summer Program students. (more details will be available soon)

7 PROFESSORS AND GUEST SPEAKERS ESE is proud to have the participation of an excellent group of professors and guest speakers: Adolfo Natalini - Architect After his experience as a painter, he graduated in architecture at Florence University in 1966 and founded Superstudio, which gave birth to the so called radical architecture, one of the most important avant-garde movements of the sixties and seventies. From 1979 onwards Natalini started working on his own and concentrating on his designs for historical towns in Italy and other countries in Europe, looking for the traces left by time on objects and places and proposing a reconciliation between collective and personal memory. He is a full professor at the faculty of architecture of Florence University and an honorary member of the BDA, (Bund Deutscher Architekten), of the Accademia delle Arti del Disegno in Florence and of the Accademia di San Luca. Michel Boucquillon Architect and Designer Belgian Architect and Designer, Michel Boucquillon began at an early age what would be a long list of awards for architecture, furniture and product design in Belgium, Germany and Italy such as Compasso d Oro (Roma 2011) mensione d onore, Good Design (Chicago 2008), Design Plus (Frankfurt 2005), Prix van Hove (Bruxelles) Mr. Boucquillon s portfolio includes the Chamber of the European Parliament in Brussels, among many others clients such as Artemide, Antoniolupi, Tecno, Serralunga, VCR, Valli arredobagno, Auerhahn, Salvatore Ferragamo. Ira Kenneth Glasser Creative Development & Management Consultant Based in California, Mr. Glasser provides consultancy for people, businesses and organizations aimed at the realization of their fullest potential. Primarily focused on real estate financing and development, Mr. Glasser has also worked with human services and arts organizations in many capacities, particularly program development and strategic planning. As a Real Estate Broker his current clients include major international financial entities such as investment banks and insurance companies, and as a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and Psychotherapist his interests are focused on success coaching and the principles of eco-nutritarianism. Mr. Glasser brings passion, attention to detail and creativity to all of his work.

8 PROFESSORS AND GUEST SPEAKERS Emiliana Martinelli Architect, Industrial Designer, President of Martinelli Luce, Lucca, Italy Architect and Industrial Designer Emiliana Martinelli directs the company that her father Elio established in the 50s and she is responsible for the design, the production of lighting fixtures, as well as for managerial issue. She takes care of Martinelli Luce graphics catalogues, brochures, newspapers and the advertising on sector magazines, but in particular she devotes herself to lighting fixtures design, both for home and for public and commercial areas. Nature, geometrical forms and simplicity are her sources of inspiration for design together with new technologies, new materials and the constant evolution of light sources, constantly keeping energy efficient in mind. Gianni Pettena Architect, Critic and Theorist Mr. Pettena is a prominent Italian theorist whose roots trace back to the Radical Movement. Mr. Pettena has written numerous manifestoes on his theories of design and architecture. Professor at the University of Florence, visiting professor, critic and lecturer in many USA and UK universities, he has been involved since the 60s in the study and practice of experimental architectural activity through exhibitions, lectures, articles and books. His works are in the permanent collections of public galleries such as the Pompidou Center in Paris and the Frac Centre in Orléans as well as in the Venice Biennale Historical Archives. Pierluigi Sacco Economist Professor of Cultural Economics, IULM University, Milan where he is Dean of the Faculty of Arts, Markets, and Heritage, also teaches Creative Industries at the University of Italian Switzerland (USI), Lugano. He has also taught in numerous other universities, including IUAV and the John Hopkins Bologna Center. Prof. Sacco writes for Il Sole 24 Ore, Saturno and Flash Art, has been a keynote speaker and invited lecturer worldwide, and has provided extensive consultancy and advisory work for governments, local administrations and cultural institutions in the European Community.

The 3 days trip to Selinunte (Sicily) and the 1 day trip to Venice are not included but throug the School you can have special prices regarding flights and accommodation in Sicily (a special workshop in Selinunte is offered to the students of this programme completely free of charge). *While the European School of Economics is a city campus and does not have its own student housing, there are a number of structures at our service to make sure that you find comfortable accommodations with good rates and they are well taken care of for the duration of your course.
