The visin is t establish architecting and design capability as the enabling factr fr delivering high quality IT slutins that meet business and IT Services needs in a cst effective and efficient manner. Ideally yu will have a technical backgrund in enterprise level applicatin design and develpment, cupled with slid business facing skills fr business/systems analysis ideally in a business prcess reengineering cntext. Reprting directly t the Chief Architect this is a high visibility rle that will give yu pprtunity t influence internally and externally and t put IT services at cre f delivering value t ur university clleagues. Yu will wrk clsely with ur Business Partnering team t understand emerging needs acrss the University and t design high-quality technical slutins that are aligned t ur agreed strategy. Yu will wrk clsely with technical experts acrss IT Services and the key suppliers t maintain a cmplete understanding f the current applicatin and integratin architecture and its interdependencies, and cntribute t the planning f its evlutin. Yu will lead and cllabrate with technical clleagues t devise creative slutins as required. Yu will then explain and champin the prpsed slutin in the language f service risk and benefit which is understandable t stakehlders. The University There s never been a mre exciting time t jin us. IT Services The purpse f IT Services is t create a digital campus in which students and staff can be as creative and prductive as pssible as they learn, teach, undertake research and run the rganisatin. Many f ur services are typical f the crprate wrld and ffer similar challenges: the ERP business applicatins underpinning finance, HR/ payrll, marketing, facilities management and a range f ther cmmercial enterprises applicatins; managed desktps and laptps; strage; data and vice netwrking ; printing; web cntent management and multimedia design and prductin. Other services are specific t the University and create an interesting range f challenges fr the IT functin. Here the creatin, sharing, analysis and disseminatin f infrmatin are defining activities. Bth students and researchers tend t be demanding, innvative users f technlgy and we aim t prvide them an infrmatin envirnment in which they can be as creative and prductive as pssible. We prvide them with a Virtual Learning Envirnment, High Perfrmance Cmputing services and a huge range f specialist sftware. Our researchers prduce vast amunts f data and need tls t manage, mine and generate infrmatin frm it. Many f them cllabrate with thers acrss disciplinary and rganisatinal bundaries. Our students have grwn up with internet technlgies and expect t be cnstantly cnnected using their mbile devices. A technlgy rich experience is what they expect frm University life. We prvide equipment in teaching rms, PC areas, wireless everywhere, and internet services in the halls f residence. 3 Backgrund IT Services was established in January 2007 by merging a range f previusly fragmented rganisatins. The initial fcus ver the last few years was n custmer services imprvement and infrastructure mdernisatin prgramme. With thse prgramme nw substantially cmplete IT Services is nw ready t mve t the next stage in its develpment. The gal nw is t be perceived by all as the institutin s trusted IT partner. We aim t help researchers d mre effective research and students derive mre value frm their University experience. We aim t play a leadership rle in business prcess transfrmatin. In these varius ways, we will create value fr the University rather than simply serve it. IT Services Architecture Functin The Chief Architect heads this functin and reprts t the Deputy Directr, Systems Design and Develpment. The IT Services Architecture wrks clsely with the Business Partnering & ther IT Services functins t ensure that slutins are architected and designed with gd understanding f business needs and are aligned with the University strategies, business prcesses, infrmatin flws & IT landscape. The IT Services Architecture functin is supprted by a virtual team f technical experts in the department in the frm f Slutin Design Authrity grup. This grup sets and applies the principles necessary t ensure that all slutins fit well within a cherent, flexible, maintainable, scalable, secure and cst effective IT architecture & slutin landscape, whilst meeting the specified business requirements in the ptimum manner. Slutin Architect Rle Slutins architecture & design has been identified as a key capability required fr the delivery f the University s IT strategy. As part f the IT services architecture team yu will reprt t the Chief Architect and will als frm part f the virtual Slutin Design Authrity team. Yu will wrk clsely with the Systems Design and Develpment team and ur Business Partnering functin t understand evlving service requirements and t translate these int slutin designs. As a technical expert acrss applicatins, integratin and infrmatin services yu will use yur crss-dmain knwledge f technlgy, understanding f business needs; requirements and prcesses t design and dcument high level technical slutins ensuring this is in line with the University s strategy and gvernance requirements. Yu will leverage the investment in the capability f the existing systems and where apprpriate use the COTS prducts t deliver the slutin. Yu will be part f the team that sets ut and enfrces the architectural principles n which decisins will be made cncerning applicatin develpment and cnfiguratin, system interfaces, surcing and technlgy chices. Yu will wrk with clleagues frm acrss IT Services t develp the radmap fr ptimising the University s applicatin prtfli. Yu will als undertake impact analysis with clleagues when significant changes t existing systems are prpsed with a view t manage risk and deliver the relevant utcme. Yu will wrk as part f the team t build and maintain excellent relatinships with key stakehlders acrss the University and help them t identify pprtunities fr expliting IT slutins t generate value in all areas f learning, teaching, research and peratinal activities. 4 Principal Accuntabilities Develp Slutin Design and Architecture T design system slutins that meet the business, functinal and nn-functinal needs f the rganisatin. This includes acting as lead designer n majr infrmatin systems prjects and leading reviews f changes t existing legacy systems. T liaise with business stakehlders where necessary t understand their dmain and requirements; gather infrmatin fr nn-functinal requirements and als t explain t them technlgy capabilities, cnstraints and peratinal cnsideratins. T cntribute and where applicable lead the activity t cnstruct and dcument the cmprehensive view f as-is slutins architecture including cntextual, lgical and physical views, high-level infrmatin flws and external and internal system interfaces. T ensure the that nn-functinal requirements are effectively specified and cnsidered in slutin designs T generate High Level Slutin Design dcuments that can easily be understd by technical staff and custmers. In due curse with supprt and mentring where apprpriate yu are expected t: Prvide validatin that the slutins develped cmplies with apprved slutin design and agreed design standards. Supprt the Chief Architect and cntribute twards the creatin f the Architecture artefacts especially in the applicatin and integratin dmain. T maintain and develp specialist skills in line with the needs f the service. Develp detailed understanding f shared systems and enabling technlgies, such as identity management, business analytics/reprting, enterprise applicatin integratin and web cntent management. Wrk clsely with the Develpment & Integratin Manager n the specificatin and implementatin f develpments in these areas. Maintain brad knwledge f emerging thinking and best practice in slutins architecture, systems integratin and sftware develpment and share it with the wider IT Services team. Prvide advice, guidance and recmmendatins t stakehlders fr system slutins. Wrk with Prject Managers and Business Analysts t ensure that IT prjects have clearly defined technical deliverables and the ptential slutin will meet nn-functinal requirements, is fit-fr-purpse and is cnsistent with the University s slutins architecture. Assess and reprt n the suitability f prpsed 3rd party applicatins frm a technical, architectural and integratin perspective. Ensure any such system meets the University s technical standards, have suitable interface/integratin capabilities and d nt unnecessarily duplicate already available functinality. Individually and as part f the Slutin Design Authrity, review significant changes fr prpsed prjects and ensure any such changes are cnsistent with the slutins architecture, IT Strategy and the verall aims f the University. Cmmunicatin Articulate, present and champin the slutin design t a wide range f stakehlders (with varying degrees f technical expertise) within and beynd IT Services, ensuring it is bth widely understd and fully supprted. 5 Utilise frequent, infrmal engagement with technical teams and individuals in rder t identify issues and pprtunities, and t create cnsensus and understanding f planned systems changes. Qualificatins, Knwledge and Experience Required Essential Desirable Educated t degree level in a scientific r technical discipline r significant level f IT experience within similar cntext. Experience in Higher Educatin sectr is nt essential but culd be beneficial. Significant experience fr delivering slutin designs r in a similar rle with shared respnsibility fr architecting, designing and planning IT slutins. Prven experience f designing and delivering IT slutins acrss a number f system areas including COTS based slutins; n-tiered web architecture; web services; applicatins and data integratin. Slid understanding f system & data integratin principles and ptins Slid understanding f data mdelling and its use and impact in slutin design (business mdel; lgical mdel; entity mdel and physical mdels) Sme expsure and appreciatin f ptential slutins fr perfrmance ptimisatin; security cntrls (particularly authenticatin & authrisatin & Web security); scaling (ut/up); availability and redundancy ptins and its impact these aspects n slutin design/apprach. Experience f wrking within a cmplex rganisatin with demnstrable expsure in business/systems analysis r prject management area. Demnstrable experience f wrking with stakehlders t prvide slutins fr successful business prcess change Brad knwledge and expsure t all layers f the mdern IT technlgy stack, including hardware, perating systems, netwrk, applicatin framewrks, database systems, vendr slutins and industry trends. Experience and gd understanding f SQL ideally in MS SQL Server envirnment Brad appreciatin f Architectural framewrks and sftware and integratin patterns Demnstrable experience f dcumenting and presenting cmplex system & slutin cncepts using presentatins, diagrams and mdels. Experience f supplier relatinship management bth pre- and pst-cntract stages.
