1 Montgomery College Workforce Development & Continuing Education Youth Programs A Special One-day Program at Montgomery College for Students in Grades Asistencia en Español Disponible Saturday October 19, 2013 Futuremakers programs consist of experiential learning activities where you take on the roles, personalities, expectations, and experiences of engineers, designers, and fabricators. Discover the challenges of invention! Turn problems and mistakes into creative challenges, and learn the skills to work through them with practice, collaboration, and serious play. Instructors are from the Montgomery College faculty and staff, Montgomery County Public Schools, and the Montgomery County community. Builders of the Future accepts students on a first-come, first-served basis. The cost for this one-day program is $85. Although students are escorted between classes, staff members are available to assist students in locating their assigned classrooms. Parents are cordially invited to accompany their children to Futuremakers at no additional charge. While students are sharing this exciting educational experience, a special optional workshop for parents will be held from 9:15 11:15 a.m. (see page 3). Separate registration is required for parent workshop. 2 DESCRIPTIONS OF SESSIONS Course #: YOU445 CRN #: Saturday, October 19, 2013 Rockville Campus 8:30 a.m. 3:30 p.m. For Students in Grades 4 6 Students will select from the below choices one (1) course for the morning session and one (1) course for the afternoon session. However, due to limited classroom size, it will be best if students choose a 2 nd and 3 rd choice for both morning and afternoon. See registration form for instructions. 1. Fabricating Flight Machine-Sewn Parachutes Design, assemble, and launch custom-made parachutes from five stories high! Master fundamental hand and machine sewing and assembly techniques. Launch and test your creation! Use technical fabrics to produce an original take-home project. No experience necessary. Sewing machines rock! 2. NEW! Game Controller Construction Lab Using the MaKey MaKey microcontroller, fabricate amazing real-world objects that react to conductivity, and control games and software! Build an instrument, action controller, or completely new way to use a keyboard. No programming experience necessary, basic programming introduced. Participants will have the option to purchase their own microcontroller to take home. 3. NEW! Hypnotica Motorized Light Workshop Work with experienced engineers and artists. Make-and-take a functional, hypnotic electromechanical gizmo using LEDs, electric micro-motors, batteries, and professional grade materials and hand tools. No experience needed perfect for emerging engineers, sculptors, and tinkerers. 4. Beyond the Blocks Lego Hacks and Mods Drill, cut, electrify, and modify custom parts for unique Lego take-home projects. Work with piles of plastic bricks, hand tools, adhesives, and electronic components to drill, carve, cut, and connect plastic blocks into totally crazy configurations that incorporate light and moving parts. This original design course for novice and experienced builders encourages experimentation with materials, tool use, hand skills, and creativity. 5. NEW! Pro Grade Box Workshop Master woodworking basics by creating a sturdy, awesome box. Follow plans, measure, mark, cut, drill, shape, and finish softwoods using real, commercial-grade hand tools. Everybody takes their project home, along with safety gloves and glasses. For the emerging woodworker, tool geek, and tinkerer. 2
3 DESCRIPTIONS OF SESSIONS 6. NEW! Engineering Microbots and Spinners Create amazing creatures that wiggle and spin using micromotors, plastics, foams, and light metals! Learn basic electronics and mechanical engineering to activate motors and fabricate pressure-sensitive switches. This introduction to the mechanics of vibratory motion and electronics is perfect for young engineers, biology nuts, and creature creators. 7. Digital Vinyl Graphics Studio Use laptops and awesome vector graphics software to design and robotically custom cut professional quality stickers on our industrial vinyl plotters! No artsy-craftsy stuff here we break out the big tools! For the budding graphic artist, industrial designer, or entrepreneur. 4 GENERAL INFORMATION COST: Tuition: $ Fee: $25.00 = $ Non-Maryland residents add $25. Course total to be paid at time of registration. Tax-deductible contributions to the Youth Scholarship Fund may be added to this total. REGISTRATION PROCEDURES: Complete registration form. Be sure to include student s Montgomery College Identification Number. If you don t have one yet, one will be created when you register. This is a permanent MC ID Number and should be kept in a safe place. Application forms cannot be processed without applicable signatures. Mail completed registration form directly to: Office of Continuing Education, Montgomery College, Youth Program, 51 Mannakee Street, Rockville, MD Payment may be made using VISA, MasterCard, or Discover or by making a check for $80.00 payable to Montgomery College. You may choose to FAX completed registration form indicating VISA, MasterCard, or Discover payment to or you can REGISTER ONLINE using your credit card (VISA, MasterCard, or Discover) at youth. This program fills quickly, so be sure to register as soon as possible. Walk-in registrations must be brought to Campus Center, Room 220, on the Rockville Campus. Session assignments will be made in the order that registrations are received. Students will receive confirmation of registration. If confirmation is not received at least three days prior to the day of the program, please contact our Customer Services Office at Session assignments and locations will be available at checkin the morning of the program. Please report directly to room 136 in the Technical Center Building, Montgomery College, Rockville Campus. A campus directory is located at the main walkway entrance to the campus. REFUNDS: 1. One hundred percent refund of tuition and fees is granted if a course is administratively canceled. 2. Withdrawal/drop request: If a student requests to drop or withdraw from a class, the request must be received at least 6 days prior to the start of the class to avoid a withdrawal/drop fee. Requests to withdraw from a class received within 6 days of the start of the class will be subject to a fee of $ Request a refund IN WRITING and mail to: Office of Continuing Education, Montgomery College, MC Adventures, 51 Mannakee Street, Rockville, MD There is NO refund after the program begins. A stop payment on checks does not constitute withdrawal from a class. There is a $25 invalid check fee charged each time a check is returned by a bank. For refund or withdrawal questions call or Allow up to five weeks for a refund to reach you. The College reserves the right to cancel a course due to insufficient enrollment. The College reserves the right to refuse registration due to insufficient payment. MC does not provide medical assistants or care attendants. Parents are not permitted to attend camp with their child. The exception to this is for those attending an Intergenerational Program specifically designed for Youth accompanied by Adult(s). LUNCH: Students must bring lunch. Cold drinks will be available for sale at campus vending machines. The cafeteria does NOT operate on Saturdays. TRANSPORTATION: Students and their parents or guardians are responsible for all transportation arrangements. Please pick children up promptly at 3:30 p.m. There are no provisions for supervision of students after the end of the program. Students not picked up by 4:00 p.m. will be taken to the Security Office located in the Counseling and Advising Bldg. Ample parking is available. Public transportation is available; please call Montgomery County Transit Information at RIDE. HEALTH SERVICES: Should a medical emergency occur, trained personnel from the Campus Security Office will be available to render aid.
