September 07, 2012 was a red-letterday for the De La Salle University Library because it was the day when it formally received the Clodualdo del Mundo, a collection of books, original screenplay manuscripts of films, theatrical and comics posters, and memorabilia. Witnesses to the ceremony were treated to a dramatic reading/radio acting, presenting one of the scenes in Prinsipe Amante, the most remarkable work of Mr. Del Mundo. The Turn-over ceremony was graced by the heirs, Amante Del Mundo, Angela Del Mundo-Mendoza, and DLSU Fellow Dr. Clodualdo Del Mundo, Jr., who was very instrumental in the Library s acquisition of the said collection. The three heirs, together with DLSU Associate Vice Chancellor for Academic Services, Mr. Edwin Santiago, representing the donors and the donees, signed the Memorandum of Agreement (MOA). Dr. Doy, as he is fondly called, gave the Remarks of Circumstance while Dr. Alvin Culaba, Executive Vice President for External Relations and Internationalization and a University Fellow, delivered the University s response. To give the audience a glimpse of the collection, an exhibit was opened right after the program. The said exhibit showcased samples of Del Mundo s works in the form of books, scripts, sketches and posters, and memorabilia, like his old pictures, photographs, medals, and even his typewriter and FAMAS trophy. Several important people in the field of literature and film were Clodualdo Del Mundo...see Page 3

4 ette B a l i t a n g A k l a t a n Vol. XLIII - Nos September - October 2012 Karen joins ADMU Rizal Library s 5th International Conference Karen Cecille Natividad took time to pause from work and increase her knowledge to further improve her domain, the University Archives. After a two-day break from work, here is what she has reported: Libraries, archives and museums are institutions tasked to collect and preserve a country s tangible and intangible heritage. Together, they aim to make precious knowledge about our past available for the future generation. However, these knowledge are at risk to be permanently forgotten due to the challenges faced by these institutions. Rizal Library s 5th International conference with the theme Libraries, Archives and Museums: Common Challenges, Unique Approaches, which was held on October 25-26, 2012, aimed to bring together practitioners around the world and address challenges faced by these institutions in terms of marketing and promotion, preservation and conservation, disaster planning and management, research, digitization and cultural preservation. The first day focused on marketing and promotion and preservation and conservation. It dealt with tried and tested approaches in identifying products and services, reaching target markets, branding, fund raising to improve market position and sustainability. In terms of preservation and conservation, i t s o u g h t to provide librarians, archivists and curators with strategies on sustainable preservation and conservation program which includes careful selection of tools and media, developing workflow, environment control and balance preservation. The second day was as busy as the first day. Four topics were discussed namely disaster planning and management, libraries and research, digitization and cultural heritage preservation. After concluding with the practices and procedures in salvaging collections from disasters, the second day started in presenting efforts of libraries, archives and museums in disaster preparedness and prevention, disaster mitigation and risk assessment and collection valuation and insurance. It also dealt with the roles of libraries and librarians in research, addressed issues and trends in standards, metadata, and preservation of digital information and knowledge and presented traditional as well as innovative techniques in the preservation and conservation of cultural heritage materials. The conference has put together numerous research papers in various fields which challenged librarians, archivist and museum curators today. However, due to the number of papers and limited time to take those all up, there was barely any time for questions and clarifications from the audience. In addition, some sessions seems overlapping. But in general, the conference has successfully presented the common challenges in libraries, archives and museums in this age of globalization. It has also been a wakeup call to preserve and conserve our culture and heritage for them to continuously live despite years.

To jumpstart these series of events, a lecture entitled, The Road To 270, was interactively discussed by Mr. Al James Untalan, Faculty, International Studies Department on October 25, The talk clearly explained how voters elect a body called an electoral college, which would then elect the President. This system of government, practiced by America, embraces the idea of indirect democracy. Also, from October 29 31, 2012, a U.S. Mock Election Campaign was carried out to engage the community in the U.S electoral process. This was accomplished by visiting 50 classes to represent the 50 U.S States. International Studies Major in American Studies students actively joins the mock campaigns for the two competing political parties the Democrats and the Republicans. Upcoming events that would take place in November are the U.S Elections Exhibit highlighting the mock election results here in DLSU and a post U.S-election symposium about the implications of the new President in the areas of international affairs, domestic politics and economics. 5
6 ette B a l i t a n g A k l a t a n Vol. XLIII - Nos September - October 2012 American Corner-Manila celebrates International Literacy Day In the words of UNESCO Director General Irina Bokova, Education brings sustainability to all the development goals, and literacy is the foundation of all learning. It provides individuals with the skills to understand the world and shape it, to participate in democratic processes and have a voice, and also to strengthen their cultural identity. Literacy, indeed, is the foundation of all learning. It equips us with the essential skills needed for life. With an army of educated people, our society can definitely meet the demands of these generations pressing needs for development. As we continue to affirm our commitment to contribute and support the educational needs of our community, American Corner-Manila in partnership with the Center for Social Concern and Action organized an outreach activity on the 10th of September Joining us in celebrating the day were the parents and children from Brgy. 704, Zone 77 of Malate, Manila. Dr. Susana Estanislao, DLSU s Director of the Office of Counseling and Career Services, led a session for the parents entitled, Pagsuporta at Paghikayat sa Pag-aaral ng Ating Mga Anak. The session covered a number of practical guides and techniques to support and motivate their child s literacy learning. She further gave them a brief activity that led them to recognize their child s need and identify ways on how they can support them. Meanwhile, the kids greatly enjoyed a fun-filled interactive storytelling session, as they playfully participate in answering every question. Also, they were able to explore some cool educational apps using ipads which further motivated their interest in the session. We are also much honored for a timely visit by Ms. Eileen Deegan, the Global American Corner Coordinator and Ms. Reysa Alenzuela, Director of the Thomas Jefferson Information Center, as they were able to see how the Corner carried out its activities. The day ended up with thankful parents and children anticipating for more activities like this. Even though we haven t gathered a good number of people to represent the large group of our fellow Filipinos who, up until this day, experiences barriers to literacy, this clearly signifies that we can help each other in many ways. Good intentions, no matter how small, can always make a difference.
B a l i t a n g A k l a t a n LE UNIV LI B R A RY SI T Y ER N e w s e t t e Vol. XLIII - Nos September - October 2012 AL DE L A S MY 2012 SLA EXPERIENCE By Joseph M. Yap It was March 22, 2012 when I eagerly applied for the 2012 SLA Asian Early Career Award. Upon knowing that there is such a travel grant, I grabbed that opportunity to become an SLA member and submitted my essay to the Awards Committee. After more than a month, Ms. Kyoko Sato, chair of the Awards Committee, sent me an confirming my selection as the winner of 2012 SLA Asian Early Career Award. The SLA 2012 Annual Conference & Info-Expo gave me a taste of how conferences for American librarians are being organized and managed. As a firsttimer, choosing which session to attend to is somehow overwhelming. From the vast number of interesting topics to the spotlight sessions, I was really fortunate to have been a part of this successful professional event in Chicago. Participants will absolutely get a chance to network with the top exhibitors at the Info-Expo. More than 150 exhibitors participated in this grand event. It is a place where librarians could relax, interact with colleagues and suppliers, dine with friends, win prizes and receive terrific novelty items from each of the generous library vendors. My lucky day was on Sunday when I won 12 bottles of wine. Unfortunately, I can t bring that home in the Philippines. I was hoping that my number was called for a Kindle or an ipad. Nevertheless, I am happy to share that prize to my generous room-mate, Mr. James Arshem, a retired librarian from USPTO. Expect to bring home a wide-array of new knowledge from the scheduled sessions and programs just for every special librarian. The conference provides what is needed to be discussed to advance the career of the information professionals. Hearing Guy Kawasaki during the general session and awards presentation is an entertaining way to empower librarians in every positive way they can. I extend my congratulations to the fellow librarians who received their prestigious awards this year. Joining the DBF open house during the 27th Annual Bibliography is also a way of showcasing the achievements of the divisions authors. I was indeed lucky to MY 2012 SLA EXPERIENCE...see Page 8 have been a part of it. My sincerest and special thanks to Ms. Lucrea Dayrit for including me on the list of distinguished authors for my paper I presented during the Congress of Southeast Asian Librarians (CONSAL) last May in Indonesia. This open house also exposed me to the world of marketing. I, together with Ms. Kyoko Sato, took time to spend a minute or two to invite speakers and sponsors for the upcoming 3rd International Conference of Asian Special Libraries (ICoASL III) to be held in the Philippines on April 10-12, I was able to touch-base with the best authors and members of the SLA during this open house and got the chance to meet the Chair of B&F, Mr. Christopher Hoeppner. It was also an exciting networking affair when I attended the Pharmaceutical & Health Technology Division. With the encouragement of Ms. Sato, I was 7
8 ette B a l i t a n g A k l a t a n Vol. XLIII - Nos September - October 2012 MY 2012 SLA EXPERIENCE...from Page 7 able to meet the representative of the Sub-Saharan Africa chapter, Ms. Nerisa Kamar. Afterwhich, I was also able to bump into Ms. Affra Al Shamsi of the Arabian Gulf chapter. SLA is truly global and international. My interest with the competitive intelligence as a discipline grew when I learned that there were Filipino librarians working for a local CI company. In able for me to learn more about this area, I listened to the competitive speakers during the session on collaborative insights. It was an interactive one. My interest grew deeper and will consider joining their division next year. As part of my attendance to SLA, I received my award during the supposedto-be Asian Chapter Board Meeting and Presentation of Awards. However, since there is a just a few of us present, we just pushed through with presentation of awards and introduction of the ICoASL to the small audience. SLA President Brent Mai was there to witness the ceremony. I shared the stage with Ms. Lata Suresh as the winner of the SLA Asian Professional Award. After the Asian Chapter Board Meeting, we headed to the Business & Finance Division Awards Presentation and Reception. A convenient shuttle bus is needed which is a complimentary of SLA for those who are checked-in at their partner hotels. The next stop is at Hilton Chicago where the reception is happening. It was a larger crowd with award recipients coming from Argentina, Philippines, India, United States and United Kingdom. It was really a gettogether for some of the attendees and a way of honoring the innovative and competent librarians from all over the world. Other sessions I attended were, Building a Greener Library by Ginnie Cooper sponsored by Military Libraries Division and Museums, Arts and Humanities Division; and Marketing for the Rest of Us: a Guide for Introverts by Mary Ellen Bates. My six-day trip to Chicago is incomparable. Nothing beats the 37, 000 feet altitude combined with a lot of turbulent moments while crossing the Pacific Ocean, Alaska and Canada. Receiving an award is a prestige, participating in a conference is a plus, meeting people is extraordinary and visiting Chicago is a glory. Again, all my gratitude goes to the SLA B&F, to Asian Chapter, to all the people who believed in me and supported me in this superb dream to be in America. God bless you all. J. Yap attends PLAI CaVRLC Annual Conference With Mr. David Cabonero (PLAI CaVRLC President) and Prof. Thelma Kim (PLAI National President) In his continuous search for lifelong learning, J o s e p h Ya p, MEC Librarian, a t t e n d e d t h e annual conference o f P h i l i p p i n e Librarians Association, Inc. Cagayan Valley Region Librarians Council (PLAI- CaVRLC) last September 24-26, 2012 at Saint Louis University, Tuguegarao, Cagayan. The said annual conference entitled, Advancing the Future of Libraries presented eight (8) topics to the eager participants. The eighth topic was about PLAI and its commitment as a professional association. The conference had four objectives: 1) To inform librarians and those people working in the library about the latest trends in the managing libraries; 2) To understand accreditation as an important aspect in the development of libraries; 3) To improve the services of the library using advance technologies; and 4) To PLAI CaVRLC Annual Conference...see Page 9
ette Vol. XLIII - Nos September - October 2012 B a l i t a n g A k l a t a n 9 PLAI CaVRLC Annual Conference...from Page 8 plan ahead for the future of libraries by understanding the different techniques in planning. Dr. Arnel Melad, the first speaker, talked about the library s roadmap. He referred to this roadmap as a planning concept where the library can envision its detailed direction for the future. The roadmap can also be seen as identifying the library s strength and overcoming its failures. He stressed that librarians should be competitive and committed to do relevant and responsive programs and keeping abreast of continuing professional education, open for changes and expecting to become an agent of change. Meanwhile, it was stresses in the 2nd topic that it is important to develop the human resources because they are the most important asset of the organization. According to Susan Heathfield, Human Resource Development (HRD) is a framework for helping employees develop their personal and organizational skills, knowledge and abilities. It involves training, development, job experience and interpersonal relationships. Quoting Mr. Michael Pinto, the 2nd speaker, no one can make you feel inferior without your permission is one of the bottom lines of his presentation. This message clearly states that everyone in the organization can do his/her own task and whenever failure happens, there is always a way to renew yourself and don t let anyone bug you down because of such failure. Prove to them your worth and do not be afraid of these bullies. Dr. Enrique Cayaban asked the participants, Do libraries contribute to the quality of education? Indeed. Library is one of the indicators for a school to have quality of education. Libraries support the academic institution in providing research and reading resources for its community. Dr. Cayaban emphasized that during accreditation, the librarians must possess competencies in providing better library services. They should have prepared all the necessary documents required during accreditation and that they should be able to defend the library to the accreditors. Dr. Bonifacio Ramos, later on, presented researchable areas in the field of librarianship that could be developed by the conference participants. He presented three types of researches based on purpose and approach: basic, applied and action research. He likewise presented stages of the research process. His comprehensive presentation is suited for 3-hour classroom learning. He was teaching the participants how to conceptualize ideas for research, building conceptual framework, research design, sampling, data collection and interpretation of data. The next topic, which was presented by Mr. David Cabonegro was the impact of open access resources to collection management. Open access is the practice of providing unrestricted access via the internet to peer-reviewed scholarly journal articles (Suber, 2011). He said that open access journals set advantages to students and teachers by putting an equal footing on key resources and eliminating the need for payments or permissions to reproduce and distribute content. Open access increases reader reach and retrieval power. The 2nd to the last topic was Creative Library Services through ICT, delivered by Ms. Elvira Lapuz. ICT in libraries is almost common. Ms. Lapuz set the De La Salle University Library as one of its examples. At De La Salle University (DLSU), the University Library has its own webpage where it posts all information pertinent to the services, programs and other potential queries to the library which includes reference services such as Ask LORA, Txt LORA, Chat with LORA, Tweet LORA and Skype with LORA. This website is the communication platform for the DLSU community to inform them about what is happening with the library and what their current activities are. With the use of ICT, the librarians bridge the gap in communicating with their users because they are present where their users are. They know the latest trends and they are not left behind. The last topic was Planning for Future of Libraries and Information Centers by Prof. Thelma Kim. On her presentation, Prof. Kim stressed that planning requires critical theory application. Librarians should also apply imagination as a way of creating new concepts for the delivery of library services. If activities are planned carefully, the future of libraries will yield to a dramatic change. There will be a positive change for the betterment of the libraries where ideal projects will prosper and users will feel empowered because of the right decisions.
