3 Introduction George Barker & Co, the commercial refrigeration company, was set up in Leeds in Since then it has expanded and is now an established market leader in Great Britain for designing, manufacturing, installing and servicing custom refrigerated display cabinets for major supermarkets. The company employs over 360 members of staff who are either based in the company s head office and factory in Bradford, or work from home. The Challenge George Barker & Co s previous payroll and time and attendance systems were server based and as a result failed to run smoothly. Therefore, it required modern solutions that would provide regular up-to-date information and efficient reporting functionality. Not all of George Barker & Co s employees are based in the head office; the company also has field-based and factorybased employees. In order to ensure accuracy of data, it was therefore essential that the time and attendance and payroll system could be accessed by all, regardless of where they are based. The Field based engineers submit electronic time sheets via a hand help PDA which uploads directly into SAP and now, with the assistance of ADP a link between SAP and ADP has been established. As George Barker & Co has a strong commitment towards the environment in all of its working practices, this means that all the functions of the business, including payroll, have to adhere to an ecopolicy Previously these were paper based timesheets which were faxed, posted or hand delivered, manually checked and signed off and then input manually into the payroll system. Again this saves many hours of both management and HR administration time. In addition, George Barker & Co s employees work on a myriad of different shift patterns, which means both time and attendance and payroll are extremely complex. In order to deal with this, the company needed a solution that was flexible for each shift pattern.

4 The Implementation The evolution to ADP freedom and ezlabormanager was a straightforward decision for George Barker & Co, as Christine adds, The transition to web-based solutions was a natural progression for us in order to align the time and attendance and payroll functions with our ecopolicy. Christine says, Our ADP account team is extremely supportive and understanding. They are really knowledgeable about the products and as a result we have developed a great working relationship with them. After undertaking a thorough tender process and assessing the market for the best solution, ADP freedom was chosen as the payroll solution and ADP ezlabormanager for time and attendance. 5 The Outcome The first significant benefit to George Barker & Co of using ADP freedom and ezlabormanager has been the implementation of a payroll solution that is always upto-date and fits in with the complex shift patterns and varied overtime payments of its employees. Christine comments, Having a variety of shift patterns and overtime rates can prove extremely complicated, and on top of that we operate a banked hours scheme which the system copes with admirably. Using ADP freedom and ezlabormanager together has meant that the Line Managers and the HR team are spending far less time on administration. The web-based nature of the solutions has also proved to be beneficial for recording staffing changes within the company, as Christine adds, Moving to a web-based system was a top priority for us. ADP freedom and ezlabormanager allow us to record staffing changes with ease without disrupting the time and attendance and payroll functions of the business.
