3 WHAT DO YOU WANT TO BUILD? Clarson House, London Borough of Southwark This residential development creates 103 mixed-tenure flats and family homes on a triangular brownfield site in Southwark. Since 1997, we ve delivered projects of almost every kind, across the UK and across sectors and sizes, always with a consistent philosophy. 4 WHAT KIND OF PRACTICE ARE YOU LOOKING FOR? We believe that good architecture comes from people whose creativity and ingenuity is appreciated. We work as a team. Whoever they re from, the best ideas always win. At our purpose-built, open-plan studio in King s Cross, London, and now in our Leeds and Manchester studios, we ve created environments where a diverse workforce and an open, fair, friendly culture can flourish. We ve held an Investors In People Silver accreditation since 2010, which is almost unique in our profession. We demand much of ourselves and put a lot into the development and training of our staff, which means we re able to bring trusted, experienced staff to every client meeting. In feedback, clients often rate those people as exceptional. Most importantly, the men and women that make the practice seem to like it here. Many of them have been with us for more than ten years. 5 Doncaster Civic Office Doncaster Council s new Civic Office assists the Council to rationalise its estate, bringing several departments together under one roof in a purpose built, low energy building. This RIBA award winning, BREEAM Excellent workplace provides accommodation for up to 1,600 staff at a cost of just 1,171/m 2 including Category A and B fit out work. The 1,718 m 2 five-storey building includes; flexible office space, a state ofthe-art Council Chamber, and a one-stop-shop for frontline council services. A spend to save development, it is set to reduce the Council s operational costs by an estimated 650,000 per annum. 9/24
6 WHAT MAKES A SUCCESSFUL BUILDING? Golden Lane Estate Leisure Centre, City of London This Grade II listed leisure centre was sensitively refurbished to modernise the facilities while maintaining the character of the original building. The only public swimming pool in the City of London, this project won the Architects Journal National Retrofit Award for best public building refurbishment. Bourbon Lane Won in an international design competition to develop best practice in affordable housing, this project provided 27 houses and 51 flats for rent or shared ownership, and went on to win a coveted Housing Design Award, and multiple awards from the RIBA and Civic Trust. We ve designed many eye-catching, award-winning buildings. But architecture, to us, is more than skin-deep. Its main purpose is to meet human needs for shelter, work, education, entertainment, comfort, pride, a sense of place and belonging, a safer, cleaner planet. And it must reach to the core of every building: what it s made of, to the way it s put together, how it works, the way it s illuminated, ventilated and powered. We believe buildings are only beautiful when they perform beautifully, whichever way you look at them; when they resolve all of the complex demands on them with the elegance and economy of an iphone or a Swiss Army knife. That s something that demands expertise, innovation and a shared vision from many quarters. So we work as equals, as a team, with engineers, cost consultants, manufacturers, contractors and subcontractors to design buildings that are highly integrated, in which the architecture, structure and services come together seamlessly on-site and work as one, as a perfectly balanced, beautifully efficient, high-value machine. But above all, architecture should improve the lives of the people that use or inhabit it. 10/24 11/24

8 WHAT KIND OF ARCHITECTURE IS RELEVANT FOR TODAY? Brunel University Faculty for Engineering and Design Building, West London One of Brunel s most successful and innovative faculties wanted a design that matched its track record. Our competition winning entry took the principle of a monocoque structure which the university has applied in aerospace, automotive and marine industries, and uses it to wrap around, transform and add magnificent new accommodation to a 1960s building. Lambeth Civic Centre This competition winning development in the heart of Brixton comprises 6 buildings across 2 sites, and will provide 14,000sqm of BREEAM Excellent, highly flexible workspace and 194 new homes. The development includes complete refurbishment of the Grade II listed Lambeth Town Hall building and the provision of a new 6 storey Civic Office building, connected via extensive new public realm. Mobilising the ingenuity and craft of the entire construction team and supply chain in the cause of design makes for better buildings. It stands to reason. Only by pooling our knowledge from the very outset of projects can we develop new, lean, cost-effective designs for components, construction systems and processes, and add value to the finished building. We won t apologise for repeatedly designing buildings that win planning permission at the first time of asking, and get completed on time and on budget. Or for the fact that those buildings win awards, despite their vanity-free design and ease of construction. to achieve remarkable outcomes for everyone our buildings serve and for the environments they inhabit. To make sure we re doing that, we go back and measure the performance of buildings when they re complete and occupied. In fact, we have become an authority in building performance evaluation. Intelligence and data about our own buildings performance adds to our knowledge and helps us to continuously improve what we do. To our minds, wasteful, self-indulgent architecture has no place in a world learning to live on more modest means. We bring a deep interest in the process of construction, as well as a wealth of relationships, trust and knowledge built up with the value chain over three decades, 14/24 15/24
9 SHOULD ARCHITECTS BE PROPHETS? Passivhaus development, West London (top left) Providing 30 new homes in Shepherd s Bush, at the time of completion Sulgrave Gardens was the largest certified Passivhaus project in London. Murray Grove As the UK s first modular housing scheme, Murray Grove broke new ground and paved the way for the adoption of modular construction techniques across the residential sector. Shortlisted for the Stirling Prize in 2000, this building is the only affordable housing scheme in Britain to be awarded Millennium Product status by the Design Council, and went on to win numerous major awards from the RIBA, Civic Trust, as well as a coveted Housing Design Award. We think so. We think it s vital not just to have a sense of what s coming, but also a vision. Creating buildings that are ten or 20 years ahead of their time and perform better than their contemporaries is a way of getting our clients ahead of the curve. But it s also about having a positive influence and shaping the wider market, responsibly. We are constantly looking at least ten years ahead to understand how emerging technologies and innovative processes can create opportunities for better buildings. It s something we ve been doing for a while. As long ago as the early 1990s, James Pickard worked on the UK s first speculative office building with fully mixedmode ventilation the kind of low-energy, natural/mechanical system that s now part of the BCO s standard specification. A few years later, our very first project as Cartwright Pickard launched our expertise in offsite construction. Murray Grove, a scheme of 30 key-worker apartments in Hackney, London, used innovative, steelframed modules, custome-built in the UK, to improve quality and reduce the time on site to just six months. Murray Grove won awards from the RIBA, the Design Council, the Civic Trust and the Royal Fine Art Commission, and paved the way for modular construction techniques across the residential sector. We re unashamed early adopters of innovation, but we re not slaves to novelty. We believe in evolution rather than revolution. We work from a position of knowledge and insight that comes from sustaining a continuous programme of our own research. The expertise we ve accumulated in areas such as workplace design, offsite manufacture, and innovative housing design has led us to develop products with major manufacturers, provide advice to foreign governments and steering boards for new towns, and contribute to a number of globally respected best practice guides. Today, our portfolio includes projects such as The XYZ Building in Spinningfields, which is giving a whole new meaning to flexible office space, London s largest ultralow-energy Passivhaus development and the multi-award-winning Bourbon Lane scheme, which has set new international standards in affordable housing design. 16/24 17/24
10 Wakefield One Civic Office Won in competition, this 14,800sqm BREEAM Excellent Civic Office combines a diverse programme of uses into a new model for valuefocussed civic architecture. The building features a mix of facilities including museum, café, library, Wakefield Metropolitan District Council One-Stop-Shop and civic offices, arranged around a public atrium. Colour plays an important part internally and externally. The deep reveals to the windows are clad in richly coloured glazed terracotta tiles. These colours were inspired by those used in the stained glass windows at County Hall, providing a subtle reference to the historic neighbour. 18/24 19/24
11 Chatham Place, Reading Our masterplan for this 250m mixed use development unlocks the potential of a large brownfield site on the fringe of central Reading by creating links to the existing centre and building over the inner relief road which previously formed a physical and psychological barrier between the site and the town centre. Chatham Place, Reading Sellers Wheel This mixed-use scheme sits within a conservation area at the heart of the Cultural Industries Quarter in Sheffield. Cartwright Pickard s design re-purposes a Grade-II listed industrial courtyard complex, to provide a restaurant and café on the ground floor, two storeys of office space above and an adjacent newly designed six-storey student accommodation block. This project was featured by English Heritage in its annual report as an exemplar project and was awarded Best Building in the Sheffield Design Awards. 20/24 21/24
12 MAY WE MAKE A SUGGESTION...? XYZ Spinningfields, Manchester This 30m commercial office building will provide 22,600m 2 of floorspace over ten-storeys. Specifically aimed at the fast expanding TMT (technology, media and telecommunications) sector, the building will change commercial office design in a radical way, allowing tenants to completely customise their space, from lighting and heating elements to partition walls and furniture. The scheme is currently on site and due for completion in We re looking for the best outcome for our client. That s our ultimate focus with everything we do our passion for the process, our collaboration with the value chain, our refusal to accept the status quo and our pursuit of new and better solutions. It starts with gaining a deep understanding of the client s aims, position and motivations, both written and unwritten. There s always much more we can work with than is contained in the client s brief. So we invest time in getting to know them. We ask questions, probe ambiguities, flesh out deficiencies, make suggestions and recommendations, and build a brief that s robust and illuminating, and that offers a vision for ourselves and the construction team to work towards. We ll go on working closely with our client throughout the project, involving them in the design process, focusing on their priorities. And we ll do it by providing a highly professional service, assigning two senior architects and a director to every project we take on. We pride ourselves on the talented people in our ranks, and on the training and responsibility they receive here.
