3 FACTS OUR NATIONAL PROFILE UMGCC is a National Cancer Institute (NCI)-Designated Cancer Center, a distinction shared by only 68 centers across the U.S. UMGCC is ranked among the top cancer programs in the country, according to U.S. News & World Report s Best Hospitals list. Cancer research funding at UMGCC has grown dramatically since 2002 from $19.4 to $57.5 million continues to drive scientific discovery by our cancer experts, all of whom are on the faculty of the University of Maryland School of Medicine. UMGCC is a leader in addressing cancer disparities, with research focused on improving access to care and treatment outcomes for minorities, who represent 30 percent of the patients in our clinical trials, compared to 2 percent nationally. The Maryland Proton Treatment Center, opening in 2015 in the University of Maryland Biopark, is a next-generation radiation treatment facility expected to treat 2,000 cancer patients per year when fully operational. A compound discovered by Dr. Angela Brodie and Dr. Vincent Njar is showing promise in clinical trials for treatment of the most advanced state of prostate cancer. The drug, called galeterone, was fast tracked by the FDA to expedite its development and review to help bring it to market as quickly as possible. Dr. Stuart Martin discovered that microtentacles on breast cancer cells play a key role in how cancers spread in the body. Dr. Angela Brodie discovered aromatase inhibitors for the treatment of breast cancer. Recent trials also showed that these drugs can prevent two thirds of cancers in women at high risk for developing the disease. Dr. Kevin Cullen s research demonstrated for the first time that racial survival disparities in head and neck cancer are largely explained by previously unknown differences between racial and ethnic groups in the rate of human papillomavirus (HPV) infection. UMGCC researchers are pioneering stem cell and HIV/AIDS related cancer studies in partnership with the University of Maryland Center for Stem Cell Biology and Regenerative Medicine and the Institute of Human Virology. Dr. Stuart Martin s discovery of microtentacles (pictured left) on circulating tumor cells may help scientists develop ways to prevent metastasis. Here, two breast cancer cells attach to each other. 4 THE Benefitting The University Of Maryland Marlene And Stewart Greenebaum Cancer Center MAY TM EVENT SUMMARY Scheduled for Saturday, May 9, 2015 the Maryland Half Marathon (MHM) and 5K will return to the Howard County community of Maple Lawn in Fulton, MD. Now in its seventh year, MHM attracts 2,000+ runners who choose to support the University of Maryland Marlene and Stewart Greenebaum Cancer Center (UMGCC). Runners come from around Maryland, Washington DC and neighboring communities in Virginia, Pennsylvania and Delaware to participate in this annual event which has grown significantly in regional and national attention since Thanks to the strong support of runners and sponsors, the Maryland Half Marathon has raised $2,000,000 for the Greenebaum Cancer Center in its first six years! IMPACT OF THE RACE: The Maryland Half Marathon and 5K is the University of Maryland Marlene and Stewart Greenebaum Cancer Center s largest fundraising event. Recently our scientists and clinicians have been studying their effects in treating prostate cancer too with strong, initial success.
