Our government is the potent, the omnipresent teacher. For good or for ill, it teaches whole people by its example. Crime is contagious. If the Government becomes a lawbreaker, it breeds contemp for law: it invites every man to become a law unto himself; it invites anarchy. To declare that in the administration of the criminal law the end justifies the means- to declare that the Government may commit crimes in order to secure the conviction of a private criminal - would bring terrible retribution. Against that pernicious doctrine this Court should resolutely set its face. Justice Louis Brandis in Olmstead v. 14 14 NATIONAL LEGAL PROFESSIONAL ASSOCIATES 2013 What is an Expert? An expert is a person with a high degree of skill and knowledge of a certain subject. It is someone who demonstrates great skill, dexterity, or knowledge as the result of training or experience. An attorney is a person who acts for another in legal matters. Although he or she may be an expert and knowledgeable in law, he or she may not necessarily be an expert in specific subject matter such as drug analysis, DNA, or other forensic matters. Why utilize an expert? Your attorney may be an expert in law. However, your attorney is not a trained criminalist, psychologist or investigator. If your case requires these types of services, then it would be appropriate to consider speaking to your attorney about hiring an expert as part of the defense team. About NLPA NLPA is a technical consulting firm, owned and staffed by attorneys, and dedicated to the professional mission of providing counsel, research, and related work product to members of the Bar. Our ownership structure includes attorneys licensed to practice before many local, state, and federal courts; however, NLPA is not a law firm and provides no front line legal services. On the other hand, we are much more than your typical paralegal service as our work is prepared by attorneys. Our sole purpose is to provide research and consulting assistance by lawyers, for lawyers... and their clients. With cutting-edge computer research capabilities, an experienced and top quality staff, and more than sixteen years experience, NLPA is well-positioned to provide the types of assistance members of the Bar need. You are important to us and we hope we can commence and maintain a long-term relationship with you. Please know that we are here to assist in all your needs. If you would like to know more about the services we offer, please contact us at: National Legal Professional Associates Margaret A. THIS NEWSLETTER IS DESIGNED TO INTRODUCE YOU TO NLPA. AS NLPA IS NOT A LAW FIRM, PROFESSIONAL SERVICES ARE ONLY PROVIDED TO LICENSED COUNSEL IN ALL AREAS THAT INVOLVE THE PRACTICE OF LAW. NLPA HAS CREATED THIS PUBLICATION TO PROVIDE YOU WITH AUTHORITATIVE AND ACCURATE INFORMATION CONCERNING THE SUBJECT MATTER COVERED. HOWEVER, THIS PUBLICATION WAS NOT NECESSARILY PREPARED BY PERSONS LICENSED TO PRACTICE LAW IN A PARTICULAR JURISDICTION.
