In additin t the hundreds f athletes we attract fr summer camps, the athletic department has wrked with special grups and rganizatins n campus t prmte athletic events as part f their campus visit and experience. Recently, 80 students frm Prpel High Schl in Pittsburgh attended a men s basketball game. Athletics als wrks with utside grups as we lk t fundraise athletic schlarship dllars in camps, clinics and ther athletic events thrughut the entire year rather than limiting surces t the summer. In December, the wmen s vlleyball team will run a ne day camp which will attract several hundred girls and parents t campus. Sftball and baseball hld clinics as well t attract yung players and their parents t ur facilities. Hme cllegiate events play hst t student-athletes n fficial visits t the campus as they arrive with their parents t tur the campus and meet with caches. Each year, athletics recruits several hundred students thrugh multiple means. In additin, caches g ut int the reginal cmmunities t the high schls t speak with administratrs and athletes abut the academic prgrams and services ffered at the university. Fundraising has been a key cncern f athletic administratin and generating surces f revenue t fund athletic schlarships bth nw and in the future and cntinues t be a pririty. While athletics has instituted new initiatives such as the Vulcan Athletic Club and Blaze s Kids Club, we cntinue t review thse prgrams thrughut the year and seek new avenues fr fundraising as we plan fr the athletic seasn. Leadership: This fall, staff member Travis Eisentrut and students Givanni Mrales and Jesse Burrell were selected t g t an NCAA Leadership Academy in Prvidence, Rhde Island. They wrked with ther student athletes and administratrs frm Divisin I, II, and III as they frmulated actin plans t bring back t their fellw peers. Members f the Student-Athlete Advisry Cmmittee will hld a canned fd drive during the mnth f Nvember. In additin, the grup cntinues t raise funds fr the Natinal Make a Wish rganizatin. Success: The wmen s sccer team captured the PSAC cnference champinship and advanced t the NCAA turnament. The wmen s vlleyball team cntinues its run fr a PSAC Champinship and is currently ranked secnd in the regin. Aarn Dinze and Alexandra Zanella each qualified fr the crss cuntry natinal champinships and cmpeted in Spkane, Washingtn the weekend f Nvember 23 rd (results nt knwn at time f writing). Caching Changes: Daniel Caulfield was appinted the head track and field/crss cuntry cach in Octber Emedin Sabic was appinted head men s sccer cach after the retirement f Dennis Laskey. Brady Sanders was appinted the assistant men s sccer cach. Glenn Francis was named the assistant wmen s sccer cach. Katie Tetzlaw was hired as the assistant wmen s basketball cach. Sprts Baseball Frmer All-American Kyle Petty (Stewartsville, N.J.) finished his first seasn in prfessinal baseball with the Class A shrt-seasn affiliate fr the Seattle Mariners. Men s Basketball The Vulcans were picked t finish in furth place in the preseasn PSAC West pll in Octber. Cal U played exhibitins at Rbert Mrris and VCU befre pening the year n Nv. 9. Wmen s Basketball Cal U tied fr third place in the preseasn PSAC West pll this fall. The Vulcans played exhibitins at Ntre Dame and Pitt befre pening the year n Nv. 9. Men s Crss Cuntry The Vulcans tied their best-ever finish by placing furth at the PSAC Champinships and als psted their highest-ever perfrmance by finishing sixth at the NCAA Reginal Champinships. 7 Dinze (Sidney, Ohi) placed secnd verall at bth the league and reginal champinships, while als qualifying fr the NCAA Natinal Champinships fr the secnd time in his career. Junir Mrgan Huegel (Cranberry, Pa.) was the recipient f the PSAC Champin Schlar Award fr hlding the tp GPA f all male student-athletes at the league champinship. Wmen s Crss Cuntry Cal U recrded ur best-ever perfrmance by finishing sixth at the NCAA Reginal Champinships and psted its best finish in a decade by placing eighth at the PSAC Champinships. Junir Alex Zanella (Everett, Pa.) became the first wmen s crss cuntry runner in schl histry t qualify fr the NCAA Natinal Champinships. The Vulcans were ranked N. 20 in the USTFCCCA Caches Pll in September, marking the first time the prgram was ever natinally ranked. Ftball The Vulcans finished the seasn with a 7-4 verall recrd and tied fr third in the PSAC West standings. Cal U is ne f tw schls in the PSAC t have psted at least seven wins every year since The Vulcans featured 10 All-PSAC West selectins this seasn, including fur first-team hnrees. Junir Jack Abercrmbie (Hrsham, Pa.) was selected t the Capital One Academic All-District Team and is eligible fr Academic All- America hnrs. Cal U featured as many as five players n active NFL rsters this fall. Men s Glf Cal U finished secnd at the PSAC Champinships fr the secnd-straight year and the third time in five seasns. The Vulcans had three players finish amng the tp-10 n the leader bard at the champinships, led by a third-place shwing frm junir Jrdan Eck (Williamsprt, Pa.). Wmen s Glf The Vulcans placed secnd at the PSAC Champinships fr the secnd time in three years. Cal U has finished either first r secnd at the event every year since The Vulcans basted three glfers in the tp-10 at the champinships, led by a fifth-place perfrmance frm freshman Rachel Lim (Singapre). Men s Sccer Cal U finished the seasn with a verall recrd and tied fr sixth in the PSAC standings under first-year head cach Emedin Sabic. The Vulcans featured a pair f hnrees n the All-PSAC Teams, including junir Jefrey Kyei (Tübingen, Germany) a tw-time first-team selectin. Wmen s Sccer The Vulcans have psted an verall recrd and enter the third rund f the NCAA Turnament n a 19-game unbeaten streak (18-0-1). Cal U swept the PSAC regular-seasn and PSAC Turnament titles fr the secnd time in three years. The Vulcans featured six All-PSAC selectins and fur Capital One Academic All-District hnrees with senir Stephanie Thmpsn (Queensville, Ontari) and junir Chelsea Crckett (Gilmantn, N.H.) earning first-team laurels frm bth rganizatins. Cal U has reached the third rund f the NCAA Turnament fr the furth time in the last five seasns. Sftball Cal U was named a NFCA All-Academic Team fr the third time in the last fur years and had eight players receive individual academic hnrs frm the rganizatin. The Vulcans were als featured in the NFCA Tp 10 All-Academic Team Rankings fr NCAA Divisin II prgrams. Swimming The Vulcans have psted a 5-3 recrd in dual meets after pening the seasn n Oct. 25. Tennis Cal U finished the fall ranked N. 14 in the ITA rankings and featured fur natinally-ranked players. Senir Lucie Sipkva (Pardubice, Czech Republic) captured the singles title at bth the PSAC and ITA Reginal Champinships. Sipkva and junir Lucie Rey (Geneva, Switzerland) repeated as the dubles champin at bth events and finished the fall N. 9 in the natinal rankings. Sipkva and Rey placed fifth in dubles at the ITA Natinal Champinships, while Sipkva als finished fifth in singles play at the event. Track & Field Daniel Caulfield was appinted head track & field cach in Octber. He has been with the prgram the previus seven years as an assistant cach, while als serving as the head cach f the crss cuntry teams. Vlleyball The Vulcans finished the regular seasn with a 26-7 verall recrd and secnd in the PSAC West standings. Cal U earned a berth in the PSAC Turnament fr the ninth-cnsecutive year and hsted a quarterfinals match n Nv. 19. The Vulcans have been sltted secnd in each f the first tw editins f the Atlantic reginal rankings with the NCAA Turnament selectins being annunced n Nv. 25. Junir Laurel Miller (Bethel Park, Pa.) was selected t the Capital One Academic All-District Team and is eligible fr Academic All-America hnrs. Chelsea Getsy (senir, Plum PA) presented T Leadership and Beynd ; Lindsey Lenard (junir, Pittsburgh PA) presented I Lead 365 days (and cunting) later and Lea Daltirus presented, I used t fllw but nw I LEAD. Bkstre Textbk rentals grew with ver 56% f fall titles available as a rental. Digital textbks als grew with ver 26% f fall titles available in digital frmat. The textbk adptin percentage remained high at 98% received befre the start f the fall semester. The bi-annual Grad Fair was held n Octber 28 th and included vendrs frm Balfur, Herff Jnes, and Framing Success as well as representatives frm Career Services and Grad Images. A ne-day-nly Flash Sale featuring 20% ff all fleece uterwear netted apprximately $5,500. Partnering with the University t celebrate Family Day, the Bkstre ffered 20% ff all gifts and clthing items n September 14 th. Family Day sales fr the bkstre and ftball game ttaled $10,445. On Nvember 12 th, the Thirst Prject s Schl Tur, a natinwide initiative aimed at educating and engaging students, had a presentatin table in the bkstre. CalCard The fall 2013 semester featured many custmer friendly and technlgical develpments fr the CalCard prgram. In the spring f 2013, the ability t rder fd via any campus accepted tender was imprved by the installatin f fd rdering kisks in tw campus retail lcatins. The fall 2013 term was the first full semester t start with this new and exciting technlgy, which prvided custmers the ability t rder fd at the retail lcatins. Detailed rder infrmatin, fr use by the kitchen staff, is als prvided fr each rder in the frm f detailed kitchen printuts and rder displays. This deplyed technlgy prvides fr mre efficient fd prductin, less custmer wait times and imprved custmer service. A full menu mbile fd rdering cmpnent will be added fr the spring 2014 term. Online depsits fr the CalCard prgram were again up 3% frm the fall 2012 term. The nline depsiting system allws fr students t make depsits directly t their CalCard via a webpage URL r an Apple/Andrid phne app. Students are able t access their accunts via this prtal thrugh their regular University lgin credentials. Mrever, depsited funds are instantly available in real time 24/7. The ability t add funds t the student Dine Dllar accunts will be added fr the spring 2014 term. The CalCard ffice wrked with the Students Affair s Student Media Services department t prvide full CalCard integratin with the OrgSync prgram rllut. This integratin prvided the OrgSync prject the necessary data t track user s attendance via a simple CalCard swipe at campus events. CalCard integratin is critical in prviding accurate user attendance data t the varius grups/rganizatins acrss the campus that relies n these data sets. Fall 2013 was the first term t feature the CalCard Shp Dllar accunt as the payment tender f chice in the Nss printing lab Phars printing pilt prject. This pilt prject will prvide the University a realistic pathway t reduced paper/ink cnsumptin in campus print labs, as well as better expense recupment fr discretinary printing. Dining and Hspitality Services Dining and Hspitality has cntributed apprximately $87,504 thrugh lcal purchases. Lcal vendrs include Schneider s Dairy, Bread Wrks, Irn Star Cffee Rasters, Keystne Bakery, All Occasins Party Rentals, French Twel and Linens, Laurel Vista Farms, Lendable Linens, Maple Valley Farms, Dawsn s Orchards, Dudas Farms, Nickles Bakery, Lamanga Cheese Cmpany, Maturi Brthers, Heinz, and Silver Star Meats. 9 AVI Dining and Hspitality Services cntinue t build relatinships and cmmunity n campus thrugh the fllwing activities: Operating the cncessin stands fr sprting events, prudly brewing Starbucks cffee at Sycamre Bistr, prviding bi-weekly hme style meals at Flatz Express lcated at Vulcan Village, and ffering students sushi as meal plan enhancement every ther Thursday evening in the Gld Rush. AVI is cntinuing t prmte a sustainable dining prgram thrugh the fllwing: All fall decratins and pumpkins fr the carving cntest were purchased frm Dudas Farm in Luzerne, Pa. All dughnuts served n campus are frm Keystne Bakery lcated in Mnessen, Pa. Recycling: Frm September 1 st thrugh Nvember 1 st, 140 punds f metal was prvided fr recycling. Cmpsting prgram: Frm September 1 st thrugh Nvember 1st, 320 punds f rganic waste was cmpsted, which in return cnverted int 53 punds f cmpst. PSECU PSECU interns participated in the Student Gvernment Assciatin s Student Appreciatin Day Picnic n September 18 th by prviding giveaways with PSECU infrmatin. In cnjunctin with cmmunity assistant Sara Husehlder and resident directr Bb Mehalik, PSECU presented a financial wrkshp t Jhnsn Hall residents and all students n Octber 3rd. The fllwing PSECU interns participated; Ta lr Pinkstn, Lexie Musill, Lauren Snyder, Shierlene Rsa and Kdy Kser. Apprximately 43 students attended the event. During the Hmecming events in Octber: PSECU prudly displayed the hmecming curt candidates pictures. Participated in the spirit rally and gave away sunglasses t the students in attendance. PSECU attended the hmecming ftball game and gave away red and black pmpms t the fans. The PSECU ecenter prcessed thirty-seven new membership applicatins during the mnths f September and Octber. Center fr Civic Engagement Organized the Central Bld Bank Bld Drive and Be the Match Dnr Registratin in cnjunctin with the annual Health Fair. Arranged vlunteer pprtunities fr students previusly enrlled in the AmeriCrps prgram. Implemented service management prtal n OrgSync. Presented t Greek rganizatins, Huse f Representatives meetings, sprts clubs and individual clubs and rganizatins abut vlunteering and searching fr service pprtunities. Cllabrated with the Leadership Living Learning Cmmunity at Vulcan Village and University faculty t crdinate service learning experiences fr the fall 2013 semester. Cntinued t expand the nnprfit database t prvide students with a wide variety f cmmunity rganizatins and vlunteer prjects. Implemented a week f prgrams fr Hunger and Hmelessness Awareness Week with assistance frm the Student Affairs frntlading activity cmmittee and with financial supprt frm Student Activities Bard. Cmmuter Student Services The Cmmuter Cuncil tk part in the service prject Operatin Christmas Child and dnated 63 she bxes t Samaritan's Purse. The Cmmuter Cuncil is cnducting a Sheetz Cupn Bk fundraiser fr their endwed schlarship. The Cmmuter Cuncil fficers jined student leaders frm Student Activities Bard (SAB), The Undergrund Café (UG) and the Student Gvernment Assciatin (SGA) fr a tw-day leadership retreat at Outdr Odyssey in Bswell, PA held in August. Cmmuter Services spnsred a representative frm the Mid Mn Valley Transit Authrity (MMVTA) n campus in August and distributed infrmatin t faculty/staff/students regarding services. 10 A representative frm the Pennsylvania Turnpike Cmmissin was n campus fr E-Z Pass sign-ups in September. A ttal f 14 faculty/staff/students signed up fr the service. Cmmuter Services and Cmmuter Cuncil tk their services n the rad again this semester. These events are called Cmmuter Services & Cuncil Rad Shw. Each student wh leases with Vulcan Village that has a vehicle will receive a university parking permit. This was created as an incentive per student satisfactin surveys indicating that lcatin and transprtatin (Vulcan Flyer) were tw f the tp three reasns why students were nt returning t Vulcan Village. The Vulcan Village Leadership Living-Learning Cmmunity (LLC) has been very successful this semester with 18 students participating in the prgram. The LLC students have participated in a parent-student picnic and six leadership chats/lectures with varius guest lecturers. Additinally, the grup assembled 200 tiletry bags fr dnatin t a teen grup hme in Pittsburgh as well as fr lcal wmen s shelters in cllabratin with ur Wmen s Center. Currently the Directr f Head Start/Early Head Start fr the Private Histry Cuncil, Shujuane was an active member f the Black Student Unin, Yung and Gifted Gspel Chir and Zeta Phi Beta Srrity while a student here at Cal U. 17 Disc Glf Usage Summary Reprt fall 2013 t date: 3 Intramural & Extramural Sprts The IM events fr fall 2013 academic year are Flag Ftball, Vlleyball, 3 v. 3 Basketball, Ultimate Frisbee, Ddgeball, Racquetball and Pickleball. Flag-Ftball had 310 (254 male and 56 female) registered participants; 26 ttal teams (22 male and 4 female). A special playff was held fr all Greek teams that registered and participated in the league. Vlleyball has 119 (72 male and 47 female) registered participants; 15 ttal teams. Ultimate Frisbee, 3 v. 3 Basketball, Ddgeball, Racquetball and Pickleball are slated t start mid-nvember and will run until the end f the semester. Cal U sent a men s flag ftball team and fficials t the PIRSA State Champinship at Slippery Rck University. Rashad Craig, a sphmre at Cal U, was elected as the head fficial fr the champinship game. Sprts Clubs There are nw 22 Sprts Clubs with the Tennis Club and the Wmen s Sccer Club becming the newest clubs. Sprts Clubs served ver 500 students fr the fall 2013 semester. Sprts Clubs recently tk part in a campus wide anti-bullying wrkshp cllabrating with Fraternity and Srrity Life and Multicultural Affairs. Sprts Clubs als spnsred a wrkshp n transitins with Dr. Taunya Tinsley a sprts psychlgist frm the Psychlgy Department, and frmer NHL player Try Lney. The Cal U Ice Hckey team hsted its secnd annual Cal U Hckey Hmecming Series. The event featured a Pittsburgh Penguin appearance by current players Je Vitale, Rbert Brtuzz and Penguin alumni Warren Yung and Phil Burque. The event was highlighted by a special award presentatin by the Ice Hckey Club t Cpl. Patrick McIlvain, injured Army veteran and frmer Cal U hckey player. The Cal U Baseball Club currently bsts an 8-0 verall recrd (6-0 in cnference play) in the Natinal Club Baseball Assciatin. The Men s Rugby Team recently hired alumnus Michael Lane as their new head cach. Lane cmes t the prgram with years f experience, including time spent in New Zealand. The Cal U Cheerleader squad hired as their head cach Justin Wentzel wh cmes t Cal U with years f experience frm the Natinal Cheerleading Assciatin. The Student Gvernment Assciatin spnsred Student Appreciatin Week, which included an appearance by the Pittsburgh Pirate Piergie, FREE giveaways, student spnsred OrgSync seminar, and a Mile f Change (where the students dnated spare change, which equaled the distance f a mile). The Funny Freaking Fridays Cmedy Series hsted cmedian Nick Swardsn fr a sld ut (610 seats) shw in Steele Auditrium. An Under the Sea themed Hmecming incrprated students, alumni, faculty and staff int a week-lng celebratin. Events included Cal U Hckey Night at Rstraver Ice Garden, annual Bing fr Cash event, Hmecming Curt annuncement, Vulcan Fan Zne, and the traditinal pre parade and parade activities.
