PE s Research activities and potential links to MM5 Red Ibérica MM5 Valencia 9th -10th June 2005

PE and its R&D Area Puertos del Estado (PE) is a Public Institution that deals with the administration of the Spanish harbour network PE provides technologic support to the Spanish Harbours through its R&D section: Área de Análisis de Medio Físico

Main activities Operative offshore and coastal measurement networks Numerical modelling: PE Potential MM5 User Forecast systems Downscaling Long-term (climate) hindcast useful tool: validation & assimilation Environmental (ocean & atmosphere) database Civil Engineering: Infrastructure Technology

PE Measuring Networks Deep water Buoy Network Directional Directional waves, waves, met, met, currents, currents, T&S T&S Coastal Met. Network P,T,Wind,q,Pre,irradiancia

PE Measuring Networks PE data transmission scheme in real-time

Wave forecast System WAM model (INM Met input: HIRLAM) Forecast Horizon: +48h Real-time verification

Sea level Forecast system HAMSOM model (INM Met input: HIRLAM) Forecast Horizon: +48h Real-time tide-gauge data assimilation Real-time verification

Downscaling techniques SAPO Systems provides local wave prediction at some Harbours SWAM model Resolution 500m Inputs PE Wave forecast PE Sea level forecast INM HIRLAM winds Real-time verification

Downscaling techniques SAPO Systems are coupled to agitation models within harbours. Operative SAPO: Gijon, Ferrol, Cartagena & Barcelona SAPO in development: Valencia Projected SAPO: Coruña, Cadiz, Almeria

Progress in the inclusion of MM5 in the SAPO systems PE s Aim: Improve wind forcing on SAPO systems Required Resolution: around 500 m Collaboration with MeteoGalicia: Use of a more Sophisticate Wind Interpolation scheme Considering orography, soil uses, vertical profiles Simulate for each SAPO different synoptic situation with the aim of performing a statistical downscaling Set-up MM5 as a SAPO Module Limitations. The usual one: Manpower

ESEOO Objectives related to ocean modelling 1. Development of a national numerical forecasting system at regional scale currents movement of contaminating spills 2. Set-up of high resolution numerical models and systems able to forecast currents and spill evolution at local scale. 3. Basic research in fields such a data assimilation in ocean models oceanographic and meteorological data processing air-sea interactions oil weathering process R & D in wave, sea level, circulation and atmospheric modelling. 5. Validation and intercomparison of models in a pilot area

ESEOO Model System at EPPE FOAM data (UK MetOffice) HIRLAM (INM) Meteorological forcing 10-mw, mslp,2m-t,q, surf rad, cloud Initial conditions S&T FOAM data (UK MetOffice) Tidal forcing LEGOS/POC Ocean model forcing T, S, U,V,zet POLCOMS 3D Baroclinic hydrodynamic coastal-ocean model OUTPUTS Currents, SSH Temp & Salinity Implemented at EPPE (Altix 3000) Freshwater inputs from Rivers GRDC Local & pollutant model Climatology & extremes statistics

HIPOCAS Project Main objective: Execution of 44-year atmospheric and oceanographic homogeneous hindcasts for the European Basins PE contribution: Mediterranean Basin Final PE Product: Homogeneous long-term environmental database for the Med. Data suitable for regional climate studies

HIPOCAS Project NCEP V-10m (ms-1) Observacion REMO NCEP REMO ZADRI (45.0N,13.0E) Obs: 23 ms-1 Episodio BORA REMO: 17 ms-1 NCEP: 12 ms-1

Long-term Atlantic Wave Hindcast Main objective: Performing of a 44year homogeneous wave hindcast (wind forcing from HIPOCAS and NCEP data)

Conclusions PE has maximum interest on obtaining high resolution winds over offshore areas, and therefore in the MM5. Possible collaboration between other MM5 groups and PE to generate long-term hindcast data bases PE can provide to Iberian MM5 groups offshore insitu measurements for further validation
