1 Advanced Management Topics (MGMT 410) Boise State University Department of Management Section 4036 &4037 Fall 2010 Online-Blackboard August 23, 2010-December 10 th, 2010 Instructor: Dr. Melissa Luke Telephone: (208) Syllabus Description: The egregious acts perpetrated by organizational leaders in public companies such as Enron, WorldCom and Arthur Andersen, demonstrate a need for the advanced study of critical thinking in leadership and management practices within corporate America. Main areas of focus in this course will cover corporate malfeasance, fraudulent activity, illegal business practices, corporate convictions, criminal investigations, white-collar crime, and revised government regulations with an emphasis on the Sarbanes-Oxley Act. At the center of our study will be the critical examination of how corporate ethical responsibility can affect the outcome of the United States economy. Through research and the creation of a case study, we shall gain valuable insights on how organizations function and how they affect companies and shareholders. We shall thus highlight the many connections that exist between white collar crime and the plurality of disciplines (such as government regulations, management, public policy, non-profit organizations, and law) that are at the basis of contemporary business practices in this highly controversial area. Given the nature of the course, students should keep up with current events. The reading of newspapers and magazines such as The Wall Street Journal, The Financial Times, The New York Times, or Business Week is strongly recommended. The readings for each class session are designated in this syllabus. They are designed to give you background knowledge about the course. Short written answers will be required and you are provided the opportunity to work at your own pace through this course, provided you meet all posted deadlines. Attendance Online: Your contribution to classroom learning through class participation is essential to the success of the course. In order to receive full participation points, each student is required to answer the discussion question presented in each session. Each question presented will include the specifics expected for A quality work and will need to be completed by the specified time listed in the discussion forum. I do not respond to these discussions and grade the content approximately a week after the due date. If the answers are not satisfactory, I will provide the opportunity to re-answer the question for a perfect score. I will you privately if you fall into this category or need assistance with expanding your thoughts. There will be 15 graded sessions in this semester worth 2pts each totaling 30% of your grade. Late Policy Exams MUST be taken online on the date stated in the syllabus. Late papers will not be accepted more than 48 hours past the due date and two full letter grades will be deducted for missing the deadline. This is a capstone course and meeting deadlines is a priority in this class. Please do not call or after missing a deadline and ask for an exception; it will not be granted. For example, if you wee to miss a flight on United Airlines, the pilot would not return back to the airport to pick you up. The only alternative would be to catch the next flight. In this class, if you miss a deadline your only option is to re-take the course or take a lower grade. Hopefully this analogy will assist in meeting the deadlines in this course.

3 On a side note: You can ALWAYS turn your case study in early if you believe you will have problems meeting the deadline later in the semester. I would highly recommend this option and approximately 50% of the class typically posts the paper ahead of the due date. Movies: Some of the movies required in this course are rated R. If for some reason you do not feel comfortable watching R rated movies, please feel free to watch another movie with a rating that is suitable for your comfort level regarding white collar crime and/or fraud in order to answer the discussion questions presented. However, you will need to read the posts of others who have watched the required movie in order to answer the questions on the tests. The Boiler Room has a high level of profanity and some nudity. Rouge Trader and Enron (which are both documentaries and based on true stories) should be suitable for most to view. All movies are available on Netflix and may be difficult to find in stores. Try to order the movies at least a week in advance of the due date. These movies have been a requirement in this course for 7 years, and everyone has managed to get a copy through Netflix. Exams and Case Study: There will be a 15 page (double spaced) case study due expanding critically on a company or issue which we will discuss in class. The paper should rely substantially upon primary current sources. You have wide latitude with regard to the companies or issues you may write about and the paper must be submitted in Microsoft Word and contain both in-text citations and bibliographic references in APA or similar approved format. More detailed information about the paper will be provided during the semester. A quiz, mid-term and final exam will be administered online to test your knowledge of the concepts discussed in class as well as the assigned reading. Exams must be taken on the day listed in the syllabus. No exceptions and exams will be held online through Blackboard. I would suggest you mark the exam dates on a calendar. Each semester at least two people forget to take the exam on the correct date, which will cost your final grade a 20 percent reduction automatically. Extra credit will not be offered to those who miss deadlines. This is a capstone course and I am very strict on the deadlines posted. If you think you will have problems taking the exam online or need additional time, please contact m e in person and we will establish a proctor so you can take the test on any university campus near to your location.
