1 Academy of Hospitality & Tourism A NAF MEMBER PROGRAM School: Lead Teacher: Principal: Miami-Dade County Public Schools National Academy Foundation Site Report Homestead Senior High School Kathy L. Horton Mrs. Cory Rodriguez, Principal Dates: February 1, 2013 March 1, 2013 A. Student Club Activities/Special Events DECA officers held monthly meetings in January, February and March, There are currently approximately 50 dues paying members. Edward Garcia and Trivaris Feazall (juniors) won first place in the Network for Teaching Entrepreneurship (NFTE) competition for their proposed business ViBE. Shakiera Bryant- 10 th grader in the Academy of Hospitality & Tourism was nominated as Student of the Month for January, 2013 and selected as a winner. Additionally, Shakiera was recognized for outstanding achievement during the month of February for recognition on the Principals Honor Roll. Shantal Soto, a senior has been selected to participate in the 2013 Youth Leadership Miami Program, sponsored by the Greater Miami Chamber of Commerce, the South Florida Progress Foundation and Wells Fargo. Nohelia Melendez, Nely Acosta and Mike Aviles all seniors are ranked in the top 20% of their graduating class and may qualify for the Talented 20 Program. As a result of their accomplishments they will all be honored on Friday, April 19 th, during the 27 th Annual Scholastic Breakfast to be held at the Keys Gate Golf and Country Club at 8:00 a.m. B. Curriculum Enhancement March 14 th, th - 12 th grade student s listened to Mr. Asim Pleas, Schools Manager, EverFi Financial Literacy Platform. Mr. Pleas shared information regarding Financial Literacy and stressed the importance of educational awareness in preparation of making financial decisions. Further, students learned about the financial literacy graduation requirement which is on the floor for consideration in the House of Representatives and how it impacts their graduation requirements if passed.

Curriculum Enhancement (continued) March 5th & 6 th, 2013 Ms. Fabiana Ferrer, FIU Graduate Student, facilitated presentations to students in all grade levels within the Academy of Hospitality and Tourism. Important statistical ranking information, application guidelines, testing requirements and scholarship information were shared with students to name a few. The students really enjoyed the presentation and their reflective summaries were a good gage of how they felt. February 27, 2013, 9 th - 12 th grade student s listened to presentations made by Mrs. Graylyn Swilley, Executive Director, Black Hospitality Initiative of Greater Miami and Mr. Troy Wright, Florida National University. Students learned about degree programs offered, careers in the hospitality industry, and scholarship information. FCAT Infusion Writing Across the Curriculum in Academy Classes Students in the academy classes are participating in school-wide initiatives such as using the Root of the Week and various instructional strategies designed to enhance and prepare students for Florida Comprehensive Assessment Testing (FCAT). Industry Certification in Academy Classes All academy students are preparing for certification in Photoshop, MOS, or Dream Weaver. Currently, there are 40 students who have passed the Adobe Certified Associate (ACA) exam in Photoshop. Summer Internship Preparation 16 of the 19 juniors have completed their summer internship portfolios in accordance with the March 15 th deadline. Scholarships All seniors were provided the following scholarships to apply for: NAF (3), Tourism Now, Aspiring Animation Professional, Digital Arts College & Johnson & Wales and NFTE. C. 3 E. Promotional Activities March 15th- The Annual Magnet Program recruitment period has ended and 64 students applied to Homestead Senior High s Magnet Program. Based upon the eligibility guidelines 44 students were mailed eligibility letters. In-house Articulation Ms. Horton, Lead Teacher and counselors have completed the in-house articulation process. February 5, juniors participated in the annual Job Shadow Day FAM, at the Hotel Intercontinental where they learned about various duties & responsibilities of hospitality professionals. F.
