OurCommitment To Excellence O u r C o m m i t m e n t T o E x c e l l e n c e A Message From Our President: The CA West Florida Division completed another successful year, with significant growth and expansion in spite of the challenging economy. With an economic impact approaching $1.5 billion dollars, our team s ongoing commitment to delivering high quality medical care efficiently, has positioned us well to continue to meet or exceed the healthcare needs of the West and Central Florida communities we serve. Last year more than 1.23 million patients visited an CA West Florida facility. Our patients along with friends and family, combined with our more than 15,700 employees, 3,892 physicians and 3,441 volunteers and their families, make up our diverse community. Our goal is to use social networks to harness these virtual platforms to connect with our community and share experiences. You can connect with us now on Facebook, YouTube, Twitter or our blog at CAdocs.org. More than a half million patients were treated in our emergency rooms (ER) alone, where an intensive focus on improving quality and operations resulted in our highest volumes and shortest wait times ever. With average ER wait times now posted on hospital websites, highway billboards and through text messaging, we are extending our focus into service expansion. A critical need for trauma services has been identified by Regional Medical Center Bayonet Point and Blake Medical Center, with both requesting state approval to develop Level II Trauma programs. Community ospital and Fawcett successfully added PCI programs to expand the capabilities of their accredited Chest Pain programs, while South Bay ospital earned Joint Commission Primary Stroke Center certification and Chest Pain Center accreditation. Oak ill ospital was named the 2009 Board of Emergency Nursing National onorary Recognition Award Winner for achieving 100 percent board certified ER Nurses and Osceola Regional Medical Center became the first hospital in the state to use the Thermosuit System, a promising new technology for improving outcomes for heart attack patients. Service expansion continued across other key service lines including the launching of the Central Florida Cardiac and Vascular Institute at Osceola while Central Florida Regional ospital was one of only 121 hospitals nationally to be recognized by the American College of Cardiologists with the NCDR Action Registry GWTG Gold Performance Award. Neurosciences was a key focus at several hospitals, including Brandon with a 40-bed dedicated inpatient unit, Largo s new Florida Spine and Neuro program and the addition of an Interventional Neuroradiology program at Northside ospital s Neuroscience Institute. Other additions included two new EP programs at Brandon and Osceola, an expansion of Behavioral ealth at Largo s Indian Rocks campus and bariatric services at St. Petersburg General ospital. Fawcett s Cancer program received Accreditation with Commendation from The CoC ACoS and Doctors ospital of Sarasota was named the #1 ospital in Florida for Overall Orthopedic Services by ealthgrades. Three major new hospital projects also moved forward, with construction continuing on the Trinity replacement hospital and planning for the new hospitals in Poinciana and Riverview ongoing. Additionally, Oak ill ospital s $6.5 eart Institute expansion will bring its bed total to 234 by year end and add 20 private telemetry rooms. All of this in spite of the fact our hospitals cared for 48% percent of the uninsured patients who received care in our communities, and 28% of the patients covered by Medicaid. Efforts continued to bring needed physicians to our communities, with more than 75 new physicians recruited. Largo Medical Center, which is home to the largest osteopathic teaching program in the southeastern United States, was named the West Coast Academy Center for Nova Southern University. Increasingly we are also working with our physician partners who engage in multiple research and clinical trial initiatives, in partnership with our hospitals. Brandon Regional ospital has several underway involving cardiology, pulmonary and critical care. Eight of our hospitals are participating in a national REDUCE MRSA clinical trial that CA was invited to participate in with key government agencies, for our outstanding leadership to date in combating this major public health concern. Congratulations to Doctors ospital of Sarasota which was named by Modern ealthcare as the #1 highest ranked healthcare provider and #2 ranked health-related industry employer in the country! Regional Medical Center Bayonet Point was also recognized last year as a Best Places to Work by the Pasco ernando Workforce Board. A special thank you to the team at Community ospital in New Port Richey for achieving Joint Commission Disease Specific Advance Certification in 12 areas this is an unparalleled accomplishment for a community hospital in the State of Florida! We will continue to focus on health care reform in the coming year to ensure access and funding for health care services in the year ahead. J. Daniel Miller CA West Florida President and Chief Executive Officer

All 15 of our hospitals are Joint Commission Accredited and Accredited Chest Pain Centers, 14 are Certified Advanced Primary Stroke Centers and six hospitals have Accredited Cancer programs by the American College of Surgeons Committeee on Cancer (ACoS) (CoC). Community ospital has achieved 12 Joint Commission Disease Specific Advanced Certifications, an unparalleled performance for a community hospital in the State of Florida. Blake Medical Center also earned Joint Commission Accreditation for Acute Myocardial Infarction (eart Attack), Regional Medical Center Bayonet Point was the first hospital in Florida to earn Joint Commission Certification in eart Failure, Oak ill ospital was named the National BCEN onorary Recipient for achieving 100% Board Certification for its ER nurses and Doctors ospital was named #1 in Florida for Overall Orthopedic Care. Additionally, several of our hospitals earned the Blue Cross hospital of distinction for cardiac, orthopedic and spine services. Blake has been awarded the Solucient Top 100 ospital in America recognition nine times, Largo Medical Center and Regional Medical Center Bayonet Point seven times, Community ospital six times and Brandon Regional ospital five times. Accredited Chest Pain Center Accredited Chest Pain Center w/pci The Joint Commission Gold Seal of Approval u r r i c a n e Preparedness CA West Florida offers one of the most comprehensive hurricane preparedness plans to ensure that our patients and our staff who care for them are safe before, during and after a storm. Our Division has arrangements and contracts in place with vendors from around the state and nation to provide support, from on-site security if needed to medical supplies, additional generators, food, fuel, emergency transportation, building supplies and construction crews who can be dispatched immediately following the storm to make needed repairs to keep our hospitals operational. Emergency communications, several days worth of food and supplies all arrive at each facility well in advance of a storm, to ensure the hospital is self-sustaining for several days. Transfer processes and plans are in place with our network of hospitals from around the country, should patients need to be relocated. Vo l u n t e e r i n g Countless hours of volunteering were performed by members of the CA West Florida Division family last year. From providing medical care on mission trips to serving as the voice for children through programs such as Guardian Ad Litem and Autism advocacy, our staff, volunteers and physicians give back to our communities, both in and outside of our facilities. C o n s u l t - A - N u r s e Free Physician Referral and ealth Information are available around the clock by calling CA-DOCS ( toll free). Registered Nurses are available for consultation through this bi-lingual community service, which also registers people for the numerous community education classes and programs sponsored by the CA hospitals of Central and West Florida. 5

OurCommitment To Excellence O u r C o m m i t m e n t T o E x c e l l e n c e Q ua l i t y & Pat i e n t S a f e t y Putting Patients First is the foundation of our culture and passion for quality health care. Many of the initiatives we implement serve as national models for the industry today. h C a r e E l e c t r o n i c e a l t h R e c o r d ( E R ) The West Florida Division has invested heavily in its Electronic ealth Record (ER) initiative, which kicks off in March Throughout 2009, many projects related to the development and implementation ER were rolled out in preparation. With ER, access to patient health information is simplified and patient safety and quality improved. Our hospitals have brought numerous clinical components for the ER on-line through major investments in technology. h C a r e u b As more and more physician practices begin using Electronic Medical Record (EMR) systems, there is an increased need to integrate data from a variety of clinical systems, including hospital systems. Linking physician practices to our hospital databases is now being rolled out through the hcare ub interface. This allows physician offices real-time access to patient clinical data from the hospital. Effective clinical data exchange can provide necessary information to physicians to make timely decisions and reduce duplicate testing and unnecessary hospitalizations. Vo i c e R e c o g n i t i o n To improve report turnaround time and patient care, our hospitals and imaging centers use Voice Recognition which allows Radiologists to report their interpretation of a study directly from the PACS Imaging system by speaking instead of dictating. The physician then reviews the report on screen, makes any adjustments, signs the report and it posts immediately for others to view. Report turnaround time has been greatly reduced to an average of just over 30 minutes. M U S E All 15 hospitals have installed this system which digitizes EKG tracings so physicians can review, diagnose and treat heart patients within seconds. E l e c t r o n i c M e d i c a t i o n B a r C o d i n g S y s t e m ( e M A R ) We led a national effort to reduce medication errors by placing this system in all of our hospitals. Bar codes on medications are scanned at the patient s bedside, providing our clinical staff with an effective tool to ensure that the right patient receives the right medication at the right time through the right route. 6 Pi c t u r e A r c h i v i n g a n d C o m m u n i c a t i o n s S y s t e m ( PAC S ) The PACS system immediately digitizes images such as Xrays, and other scans including CT, MRI and PET, so they can be stored and electronically viewed on screens anywhere. This enables doctors and other health care professionals to access the images, even remotely, and to compare new images with previous images at the touch of a button. The commitment to achieving 100 percent ER RN Board Certification for their staff of emergency nurses earned Oak ill ospital national recognition by the Board of Emergency Nursing as their 2009 onorary Recognition Award winner.

C A W e s t F l o r i d a U n p r e c e d e n t e d Fl u S e a s o n Preparation The National Patient Safety Foundation has recognized all CA employees for their efforts in supporting CA s flu immunization policy. Whatever the 2009/2010 flu season brings, CA employees have prepared well. Our hospitals stepped up efforts to encourage employees to take advantage of our free flu vaccine program and practice good hygiene. More than 97 percent of our employees have received the flu vaccine, an amazing accomplishment which helps protect our patients as well as our employees and their families. Additionally, many of our hospitals actively participate in community outreach efforts to educate the public about the importance of seasonal flu vaccine and the 1N1 vaccine. Englewood Community ospital teamed up with recording star Bobby Vinton to produce a PSA encouraging Southwest Florida residents to get their flu vaccine. N a t i o n s Fi r s t I n f a n t S c r e e n i n g Program We were the first US healthcare system to voluntarily perform a simple blood test to screen newborns for elevated levels of bilirubin that triggers jaundice. By identifying newborns at risk for Kernicterus, which causes permanent brain damage and physical impairment, we can treat them immediately and prevent this serious health threat. M e t h i c i l l i n - resistant Staphy l o coccus aure u s ( M R S A) CA continues to be a leader in the fight to stop the spread of MRSA, and was invited to participate as a partner organization in the REDUCE MRSA Clinical Trial, with the CDC Prevention Epicenters, CDC Division of ealthcare Quality Promotion and the Agency for ealthcare Quality and Research (ARQ). CA was selected due to its commitment to infection prevention, the CA A, B, Cs (MRSA) program and our standardization of specific lab data. The goal of the study is to conduct a cluster randomized trial of hospitals to compare uniform versus target MRSA decolonization as a means to reduce healthcare-associated MRSA infection. Eight CA West Florida Division hospitals are participating. M e d i c a l E d u c a t i o n Locally, we continue to be very involved in educational outreach to prevent the spread of community acquired MRSA. The national Clean ands Are Cool ands campaign, featuring teen star Mitchel Musso (annah Montana show), was launched here in 2008 and participation extended throughout 2009, with our partner schools. The goal is to educate children on the prevention of MRSA, through local presentations and a tool kit for parents and teachers available on our hospital websites. We re also bringing future physicians to our communities through medical training programs, with Largo Medical Center home to the largest osteopathic teaching program in the southeastern United States. The Largo Medical Center medical education program enjoyed expansive growth in 2009, adding two new fellowship training programs and one new residency program and increasing the number of residents in training by over 30%. St. Petersburg General ospital and Northside ospital also sponsor medical training programs. M e d i c a l R e s e a r c h Several of our hospitals are working with our physician partners who engage in multiple research and clinical trial initiatives. Brandon Regional ospital is a research site for nine studies, including cardiology, pulmonary and critical care. 7

OurCommitment To Excellence O u r C o m m i t m e n t T o E x c e l l e n c e S P E C I A L I Z E D C A R E E m e r g e n c y E xcellence ighly skilled emergency physicians and nurses combined with best practices and the latest technology benefitted more than a half million Central and West Florida residents last year. Protocol driven care that can begin in the field through direct communications with local EMS teams, and meeting stringent standards to earn Chest Pain Center Accreditation and Primary Stroke Center Certification by the Joint Commission are all part of our commitment to improve quality in our busy emergency departments. Our strong focus on enhancing care and improving ER processes has also dramatically reduced wait times to below national averages. In fact, we re so successful, current ER wait times are now posted on all hospital websites and by text messaging: ER to e a r t & Va s c u l a r N e t w o r k Our cardiovascular network ensures that life-saving technology and the latest minimally invasive techniques are available in our communities. All 15 of our hospitals are Accredited Chest Pain Centers, 10 now offer PCI and many are beating the national STEMI benchmark of 90 minutes, dramatically improving the lives of our patients experiencing a heart attack. The latest surgical techniques for minimally invasive mitral valve and atrial fibrillation repair provide a safer alternative for patients suffering from these conditions, improving their quality of life and reducing their risk for other serious complications. Our Cardiac Cath and EP labs offer state-of-the-art technology and treatments to invasive and noninvasive cardiac procedures. Additionally, many of our hospitals have opened specialized chest pain units where patients can be rapidly accessed and diagnosed without having to be admitted to the facility. (right to left) Kristopher George, M.D., Cardiothoracic Surgeon, Matthew Campbell, M.D. and Vinay Badhwar, M.D., Cardiovascular Surgeons, were instrumental in the establishment of the Central Florida Cardiac & Vascular Institute at Osceola Regional Medical Center, a comprehensive center dedicated to the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of the nations #1 health concern for men and women. 8

C A W e s t F l o r i d a N e u r o s c i e n c e s & S t r o k e C a r e Fourteen of our hospitals have earned Joint Commission Advanced Primary Stroke Center designation, the gold standard for ensuring the highest level of care is immediately available. In 2009, Brandon Regional ospital opened a new Neurosciences Center with a 40-bed expansion that includes a dedicated floor. Largo Medical Center also expanded their service with the creation of the Florida Spine and Neuro program while Northside ospital added an interventional radiology program to support their Neurosciences Institute. Our physician recruiters and hospital leadership teams have done an outstanding job working together to locate and bring these hard to find physician specialists which have enabled us to expand these services to meet community needs. C o m p r e h e n s i v e C a n c e r C a r e Cancer is the second leading cause of death in this country and our facilities are committed to meet and exceed the many standards required for the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer (ACoS CoC). To become accredited, our hospitals commit to regular meetings of the Cancer team, which includes surgeons, medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, pathologists, radiologists and hospital clinical and support staff to proactively review patient cases. Today six of our hospitals have earned this distinction, and several other facilities are preparing for accreditation visits in the near future. We are also committed to bringing the latest technology. The CyberKnife System, the world s first robotic radiosurgery system, is now available at Brandon Regional ospital and Central Florida Regional ospital. It is designed to treat tumors anywhere in the body in one to five days, versus several weeks for traditional methods. Treatment is accomplished on an outpatient basis, with no incisions and patients can immediately return to their normal routines. CyberKnife radiosurgery is an absolutely amazing and exciting technology with tremendous capabilities in terms of treatment accuracy. CyberKnife is unique in that it is the only radiation therapy delivery system with continual image guidance and correction for motion during treatment. Correcting for motion during treatment allows unprecedented targeting precision and it is this precision that translates to hope for patients who otherwise may not have other treatment options. Janelle Park, M.D. Medical Director CyberKnife Cancer Center Brandon Regional ospital 9
