2 OurCommitment To Excellence O u r C o m m i t m e n t T o E x c e l l e n c e A Message From Our CEO: Englewood Community ospital has provided healthcare services to the residents of Sarasota and Charlotte counties since As the largest employer in Englewood, we are proud to serve as an anchor in this community, with an employee base of over 400 and business contracts with local vendors from telecom to landscaping services. Our employees are your neighbors and friends. We are a part of this community and are committed to our vision: We strive to be the health care provider of choice in the communities we serve. Our hospital supports area schools and colleges through tuition support, scholarship and mentoring programs. Over 200 volunteers support our patients and families during their most anxious times. And our outreach efforts touch thousands of residents through community education, health fairs and support of local charities. In 2009, Englewood Community ospital provided care to over 16,000 Emergency Room patients; trusting our staff to deliver fast and thorough care. In all, we touched the lives of over 40,000 in our community last year; as inpatients, those needing emergency care or those seeking outpatient services. Our clinical staff is regarded as second to none, educated and trained in a variety of specialties. While our Emergency Room volumes are growing, so is the number of patients without adequate health insurance or the financial resources to pay for this care. In 2009, Englewood Community ospital provided over $3 million in charity and uncompensated care. Despite these challenges, we continue to surpass our goals in program expansion and quality measures. Our Emergency Room is accredited as a Chest Pain Center by the Society of Chest Pain Centers. Our Joint Care Center opened in 2009 and in this designated unit, you will find staff that specializes in the care of patients who have undergone hip, shoulder or knee replacement surgery. Each warm and quiet private room provides a relaxed environment where therapy can begin, and where family can provide support and encouragement throughout the stay. In May 2009 our Sleep Lab opened, providing a safe and comfortable setting for those with sleep disturbances needing a diagnostic sleep study. I encourage you to take a moment to review the next few pages, to better understand the significant local impact of Englewood Community ospital. And, I encourage you to Choose Englewood First. Quality ealthcare Close to ome. Mary Ann Conroy Chief Executive Officer

Through this gift, low income students received a K-12 scholarship enabling them to receive a quality education tailored for their specific needs. It is well documented that a one size fits all education is not the best approach for every student. Families with the means may choose the perfect school for their child but that s simply not an option for many people. Through this program children that qualify for the National School Lunch Program can receive scholarships. Qualifying parents can use these grants to send their child to the public or private school that best meets their child s needs. Step Up for Students Program 1 # of Low-Income Student Scholarships $45,475,000 12,175 (1) Represents 5 year contribution for CA ospitals in the state of Florida. Going Green Many CA hospitals are involved with local green initiatives, like Englewood Community ospital s team which is a Green Business Partner of Sarasota County. The accreditation is given by the Society of Chest Pain Centers and Providers (www.scpcp.org) and ensures that our Emergency Department at Englewood Community ospital provides care which meets or exceeds national standards in treating patients with chest pain and other acute cardiac conditions. Accredited Chest Pain Center u r r i c a n e Preparedness CA West Florida offers one of the most comprehensive hurricane preparedness plans to ensure that our patients and our staff who care for them are safe before, during and after a storm. Our Division has arrangements and contracts in place with vendors from around the state and nation to provide support, from on-site security if needed to medical supplies, additional generators, food, fuel, emergency transportation, building supplies and construction crews who can be dispatched immediately following the storm to make needed repairs to keep our hospitals operational. Emergency communications, several days worth of food and supplies all arrive at each facility well in advance of a storm, to ensure the hospital is self-sustaining for several days. Transfer processes and plans are in place with our network of hospitals from around the country, should patients need to be relocated. C o n s u l t - A - N u r s e Free Physician Referral and ealth Information are available around the clock by calling CA-DOCS ( ). Registered Nurses are available for consultation through this bilingual community service, which also registers people for the numerous community education classes and programs sponsored by Englewood Community ospital. 2 U ealth, appiness, You is a proactive health and wellness program dedicated to helping people live healthier, more fulfilling lives. The 2U program is designed to bring members the latest in health and wellness information as well as help individuals take control of their health care needs, including maintaining a healthy lifestyle, disease prevention, immunizations, self-care and injury prevention. 6 For more information and a membership application, call the Englewood Chapter of 2U at (941) or write to 2U at 700 Medical Blvd., Englewood, Florida

9 E n g l e w o o d C o m m u n i t y o s p i t a l Q ua l i t y & Pat i e n t S a f e t y Putting Patients First is the foundation of our culture and passion for quality health care. Many of the initiatives we implement serve as national models for the industry today. h C a r e E l e c t r o n i c e a l t h R e c o r d ( E R ) The West Florida Division has invested heavily in its Electronic ealth Record (ER) initiative, which kicks off in March Throughout 2009, many projects related to the development and implementation ER were rolled out in preparation. With ER, access to patient health information is simplified and patient safety and quality improved. Our hospitals have brought numerous clinical components for the ER on-line through major investments in technology. h C a r e u b As more and more physician practices begin using Electronic Medical Record (EMR) systems, there is an increased need to integrate data from a variety of clinical systems, including hospital systems. Linking physician practices to our hospital data bases is now being rolled out through the hcare ub interface. This allows physician offices real-time access to patient clinical data from the hospital. Effective clinical data exchange can provide necessary information to physicians to make timely decisions and reduce duplicate testing and unnecessary hospitalizations. Pi c t u r e A r c h i v i n g a n d C o m m u n i c a t i o n s S y s t e m ( PAC S ) The PACS system immediately digitizes images such as Xrays, and other scans including CT, MRI and PET, so they can be stored and electronically viewed on screens anywhere. This enables doctors and other health care professionals to access the images, even remotely, and to compare new images with previous images at the touch of a button. Vo i c e R e c o g n i t i o n To improve report turnaround time and patient care, our hospitals and imaging centers use Voice Recognition which allows Radiologists to report their interpretation of a study directly from the PACS Imaging system by speaking instead of dictating. The physician then reviews the report on screen, makes any adjustments, signs the report and it posts immediately for others to view. Report turnaround time has been greatly reduced to an average of just over 30 minutes. M U S E Englewood Community ospital has installed this system which digitizes EKG tracings so physicians can review, diagnose and treat heart patients within seconds. 7

Whatever the 2009/2010 flu season brings, CA employees have prepared well. Our hospitals stepped up efforts to encourage employees to take advantage of our free flu vaccine program and practice good hygiene. More than 97 percent of our employees have received the flu vaccine, which helps protect our patients as well as our employees and their families. Additionally, many of our hospitals actively participate in community outreach efforts to educate the public about the importance of seasonal flu vaccine and the 1N1 vaccine. M e t h i c i l l i n - resistant Staphy l o coccus aure u s ( M R S A) CA continues to be a leader in the fight to stop the spread of MRSA, and was invited to participate as a partner organization in the REDUCE MRSA Clinical Trial, with the CDC Prevention Epicenters, CDC Division of ealthcare Quality Promotion and the Agency for ealthcare Quality and Research (ARQ). CA was selected due to its commitment to infection prevention, the CA A, B, Cs (MRSA) program and our standardization of specific lab data. The goal of the study is to conduct a cluster randomized trial of hospitals to compare uniform versus target MRSA decolonization as a means to reduce healthcare-associated MRSA infection. Locally, eight CA West Florida Division hospitals are participating. Locally, we continue to be very involved in educational outreach to prevent the spread of community acquired MRSA. The national Clean ands Are Cool ands campaign, featuring teen star Mitchel Musso (annah Montana show), was launched here in 2008 and participation extended throughout 2009, with our partner schools. The goal is to educate children on the prevention of MRSA, through local presentations and a tool kit for parents and teachers available on our hospital websites. E l e c t r o n i c M e d i c a t i o n B a r C o d i n g S y s t e m ( e M A R ) We led a national effort to reduce medication errors by placing this system in all of our hospitals. Bar codes on medications are scanned at the patient s bedside, providing our clinical staff with an effective tool to ensure that the right patient receives the right medication at the right time through the right route. Your hospital made a bad situation feel better! From entering the ER to leaving a few hours later, everyone was professional, courteous, and personal making this unfortunate visit as comfortable as possible. Local EMS crews are in constant communication with the ER staff, obtaining physician orders in advance of reaching the hospital. More than 16,000 area residents received care in our Emergency Room last year. Our strong focus on enhancing the care provided to our patients and improving emergency processes has also dramatically reduced ER wait times. Englewood Community ospital consistently initiates care within minutes after arrival. Average Emergency Room wait times are now posted on our hospital website, A c c r e d i t e d C h e s t Pa i n C e n t e r Englewood Community ospital was one of the first hospitals in Florida to earn Chest Pain Accreditation and one of the first in the nation to be recognized by the Society of Chest Pain Centers, since March 5, 2004, for meeting or exceeding national guidelines to diagnose and treat heart attacks administering life-saving treatments within minutes of a patient s arrival. The protocol-driven and systematic approach allows physicians to reduce time to treatment during the early stages of a heart attack, when treatments are most effective. eart attacks are the leading cause of death in the United States. Through this accreditation we are striving to improve quality and patient outcomes in our community.
