MD Anderson is a health experience, a consumer experience - not a hospital. Haven t seen anything else like this in the US. Its ahead of the industry by ten years. (Patient: Rad/Onc- Not from Houston) The Art exceeds Expectations. (Patient: Diagnostic) Testimonials 23
ART AT MAYS CLINIC OVERALL QUALITY- RATING RESPONDENTS - STAFF Staff-Art Rating (Overall) % 31% % Series % 16% 4% Very Good Good OK Not Good Terrible Did Not Notice Overall what do you think of the art at the Mays Clinic, M.D.Anderson? Mean: 3.96 (p value: 0.00) The Art demonstrates what M.D.Anderson is about, patients care to the maximum, its continuity of a cure for the disease. (Nursing Staff) The artwork is the main reason why the Mays Clinic doesn t feel like a hospital. Whenever friends or family visit me I make a point to have them tour the artwork in this building. (Staff: Patient Services) Testimonials 24
ART AT MAYS CLINIC OVERALL EMOTION- RATING RESPONDENTS - VISITORS/ PATIENTS Patient-Feeling % Series % 16.5% 1% Much Better Better No Difference Worse Much Worse How does the Art in the Mays Clinic, overall, make you feel? Mean: 3.98 (p value= 0.00) Lifts your mood when you get into the lobby from the traffic. Art reminds me that there is a future- sometimes you get bogged by the details, and you look at the art. I think its stunning. (Patient: Breast Imaging) Invokes a sense of tranquility and nature s beauty. (Patient: Rad/Onc) Takes you away from the pain, mind off treatments, worry and despair and puts up a smile. (patient: Outpatient MRI) Testimonials 25
ART AT MAYS CLINIC OVERALL EMOTION- RATING RESPONDENTS - STAFF Staff- Feelings % % 30% Series1 Mean: 3.93 (p value= 0.00) % Much Better Better No Difference Worse Much Worse How does the art at the Mays Clinic, M.D.Anderson, make you feel? Art plays a significant, if underappreciated role in the general sense of calm of patients and employees. This is definitely noticeable when I travel to other buildings that are not as well-lit or well- decorated. (Nursing Staff: Breast Imaging, GU) I think that peaceful and uplifting art is extremely important for patients and staff. I find that sometimes when I am having a bad day the good artwork that speaks to me can change my perspective and make me feel completely different. (Nurse: Sleep Lab) Testimonials 26
Staff Art Appropriateness Rating % 80 41% 60 Series Highly Appropriate Moderately Appropriate 2% Moderately Inappropriate Do you think the art is appropriate for patients in the unit? 1% Highly Inappropriate Mean: (p value= 0.00) Total Respondents: 174 Tree Sculpture Feedback 59.3% of the respondents (Patients/ Visitors) mentioned that the Tree Sculpture was the Artwork they remember particularly in the facility Comments: Unique Interesting Exuberant- Filled with Life Great Landmark Meet you at the Tree Awesome Fantastic Symbolizes a lot Colorful- Sense of Something Good Needs to be toned down Needs a description Unforgettable- Not necessarily good, but a great landmark 27
The tree sculpture- it is exuberant- filled with life- focal point (Patient: Rad/Onc) Tree sculpture- gives an impression not in a hospital. Forget being sick. (Visitor: Breast Imaging) Testimonials ROLE OF ART (EMERGENT FROM CONTENT ANALYSIS OF PATIENT/ VISITOR COMMENTS): HEALING Invokes a sense of tranquility and nature s beauty. Calming, something to take you back, healing Helps imagine a brighter place. Art sets a pleasing mood for the clinic, helps to soothe emotionally- very important for patients experiencing emotional lows with their illness. BRANDING Makes a patient think he s getting better care. External reflecting the Internal. Makes it seem like they are on the ball in taking care of things. DE-INSTITUTIONALIZATION makes it less hospitally. makes it easier to come in. POSITIVE DISTRACTION Diversion from cares, different emotions, Would be sad without it. Takes you away from the pain, mind off the treatments. You don t have to look at the other people in the room. 28
ROLE OF ART (EMERGENT FROM CONTENT ANALYSIS OF STAFF COMMENTS): HEALING The artwork on the main corridor level 2 is very calming and beautifully painted. I m often swept away by the detail and interpretation of the nature scenes. I can almost smell the fresh air. BRANDING Patients and staff come to our area just to see the artwork because they have heard how incredible it is from other visitors The artwork inspires trust in patients. DE-INSTITUTIONALIZATION Reminds us of where we are not. The artwork is one of the main reasons why Mays clinic doesn t feel like a hospital DE-STRESSOR On rainy days or muggy days if you see the art with the flowers and the grass the rainy days turn into a sunny day. Tends to take you to another place if you look at it long enough. WAYFINDING Patients refer to certain artwork as landmarks. Criticisms PATIENTS/ VISITORS (9% of total comments) Impersonal Too Serene Placid Generic STAFF (7% of total comments) Not Inspiring enough Should be challenging instead of soothing 29
