2 Foreword It gives me great pleasure to present to you the (CME) Prospectus for The CME is located on the grounds of the Coombe Women & Infants University with satellites in the Rotunda and the s. We provide continuing education and training programmes for midwives and nurses from the Coombe Women & Infants University, the, the Rotunda as well as responding to the educational requirements for midwives in the Dublin catchment area. Midwifery, neonatology, gynaecology and theatre programmes are provided and delivered by means of study days, short courses, workshops and educational updates to include blended learning. This Prospectus has been informed by service needs and is reflective of advances in clinical research; evidence based practice and legislative requirements for midwives and nurses, and is prioritised in accordance with available resources. We believe that investment in continuing professional education and in-service development will enable midwives and nurses to develop their knowledge, skills and competence to meet the needs of the service and their extending roles. Self-employed midwives, Practice Nurses who are Registered Midwives, Public Health Nurses, Neonatal Nurses and other health care professionals working outside the three Dublin Maternity hospitals or in the private sector may access programmes advertised within this prospectus for a nominal fee as agreed by the CME Board of Management. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all members of the CME staff, the Coordinating Group, the Board of Management and all those involved in the development, delivery, evaluation and participation of our programmes. I would also like to acknowledge and congratulate Ann Louise Mulhall, Acting Director of the CME ( ), for her work and commitment in establishing the, and wish her well in her retirement. 4 Mission Statement The mission of the is excellence in the provision of midwifery and nursing education and training programmes, for the purpose of advancing practice through the dissemination of knowledge skills and attitudes, therefore increasing staff accountability for the provision of evidence based care. This philosophy reflects the philosophy and vision of the affiliated hospitals. Vision In preparing our vision for the CME for 2013, we were cognisant of the current economic climate of austerity and health service reform, but also mindful of the underpinning values of the philosophy and mission statement of the CME. Our vision is: To identify the educational and development needs of midwives and nurses in the three Dublin maternity hospitals and midwives in the greater Dublin Area. To explore innovative ways of teaching and delivering our programmes including expanding blended learning and video conferencing. To achieve ABA Category 1 approval for all programmes delivered within the CME. To make our programmes more accessible to health care professionals including Self Employed Independent Midwives, Practice Nurses who are Registered Practising Midwives and Public Health Nurses.. 28 POST GRADUATE DIPLOMA IN NEONATAL INTENSIVE CARE NURSING (In association with the RCSI) Programme Aim: To enable neonatal nurses to exercise a high level of clinical judgement and skills, by virtue of possessing additional knowledge and competence in the practice of neonatal intensive care (NICU) nursing. Learning Outcomes: To develop the participants autonomy and accountability within the scope of neonatal care. To apply evidence based research to their management of the infant in the NICU. To develop the knowledge base of the participants in neonatal nurse theory and practice in order that they may act as catalysts for innovation. To engender within each participant the philosophy of life ling learning and an analytical approach to their practice and that of others. Mode of Delivery: Presentations, Discussions, Workshops, Demonstrations, via Clinical supervision and preceptorship Lectures held in the and the Royal College of Surgeons (RCSI), via a process of blended learning Assessment: Theoretical assignments, Competency assessments Duration of programme: 1 year. Target audience: Participants must have completed at least 1 year NICU clinical practice. Presently, all participants must be employed by one of the five hospitals affiliated to the programme, namely: Coombe Women and Infants University Rotunda Our Lady of Lourdes, Drogheda Mid -Western Regional Maternity, Limerick Programme Prerequisites: Participants must seek sponsorship from their own hospital directorate. 31 CPR-BLS for Health Providers Programme Aim: To train and up-skill practitioners in CPR and BLS Learning Outcomes: On completion of this programme it is anticipated that the participant will: Have obtained the knowledge and skills to provide CPR to adults, children and the pregnant woman Be able to identify the signs of and take the appropriate steps to manage foreign body airway obstruction Be familiar with using an AED Mode of Delivery: Presentations, Skills practice Assessment: MCQ, OSCE Programme Prerequisites: Participants are required to read the American Heart Association BLS for Healthcare Providers Student Manual prior to attending the study day. 35 Neonatal Resuscitation Programme Aim: To introduce the concept and basic skills of neonatal resuscitation. The programme is divided into two components: NRP Online Examination, 6 th edition assesses knowledge of the causes, prevention and management of mild to severe asphyxia. Skills and simulation review and testing workshop under the guidance of a certified NRP instructor must be undertaken following examination.
