6 Chapter 5 Foreign exchange rates When buying from websites based outside Australia, foreign exchange rates have to be considered because they will affect whether the item you are buying is a bargain or extraordinarily expensive. There will be a good time to buy and a bad time to buy depending on the relative strength of the Australian dollar compared to the currency in which you buy. Foreign exchange rates change because currency is like all commodities - when it is popular, the price goes up; when it isn't, the price goes down. The influences on just how much you get for your money are wide-ranging and unpredictable.
