Business Trends Changes in customer profiles More demanding clients Social networks Changes in the Distribution paradigm Exponential increase in the capability to sensor the network. Demand side management Integrate renewable generation Physical and logic security to the network. New model for the development of Generation Development of renewable energies New model for distributed Generation. Regulatory pressure to improve efficiency Environmental concerns Development of Renewable Energy Clients are consumers of technology SMART ENERGY Higher security risks More demanding citizens Changes in the energy delivery model
What is Smart Grid? Electricity networks that can intelligently integrate the behaviour and actions of all users connected to it - generators, consumers and those that do both in order to efficiently deliver sustainable, economic and secure electricity supplies Operación basada en información en tiempo real
Smar Meters Makes the network Visible HV/M V MV Traditionally, only the main MV circuit is measured P,Q,S,I V L1 L2 L3 D1 D2 SS MV/LV Sec. Substation measurement D1 D2 D3 D3 Residential meters In a traditional system, only MV circuit exit is measured. In a system with smart metering, all consumptions are registered in LV and in the Secondary Substation. Making possible Monitor technical losses and identify potential non-technical losses Collect data to use in the ADMS analytics, protection coordination, reactive power compensation, service restoration, etc. allowing the support to other functions like predictive maintenance i D3 P P i losses P SS
Smart Grids represent an opportunity But each country should make its own decision on which problems need to be solved and make a consistent cost/benefit analysis of the different options Implementation of active demand management programs The programs for smart metering allow TOU, sending price signals to the consumers, which in turn are a mechanism to improve efficiency. The electric vehicle means the electrification of a good part of the primary energy consumption Reduction of energy losses Smart metering allows to contrast the measurements in different levels and having an effective control on losses. Improvement in the operational capability of the system, through monitoring and control and smart metering supports a better diagnosis of energy losses Integration of renewables and optimization of the network operation Making the network visible, allows to use effectively the management tools: optimum compensation of reactive power, coordination of protections, load shifts analysis. Integration of intermittent renewable energy, mostly connected to MV and even LV.

This improve the project execution since there is no need to change any process depending on the DC and SM provider combination. Interoperability allows network auto configuration as Smart Meters can use any adjacent Smart Meter to reach the DC Competitive Price The wide range of PRIME Smart Meters Suppliers has allowed to Iberdrola to reduce the Project Cost per Customer half the price, what means a 35% in the Project Cost per Customer
Developing specific software tools Saving time from the Planning phase to the final Deployment Telecom Area Design tool (SMARTplanner) Graphical tool for Smart Grid Telecommunication Network Design One month for the Pilot project, three persons dedicated work team (manual process) 30 minutes, one person, for the Roll-out Specific software running over GIS database Work process, supply and installation, permits coordination tool (webstar) Master Database with all related Smart Grid equipment Coordinates all stakeholders involved in the Roll-out (planners, installers, suppliers ) Remote access to SG devices, that allows reading success analysis and testing All telecom devices and technologies can be monitored (PLC, ADSL, GPRS ) Able to issue Smart Meter installation progress report Incidents notification from subcontractors, installers, providers, maintenance team Allows telecom devices Firmware update
The importance of designing the Distribution Automation Medium Voltage Supervision/Automation Automated Insulation and Restoration System Developed over Distribution SCADA Allows Automatic Power Supply Restoration in less than 3 minutes SAIDI decreases up to 60% (from 60 to 23 minutes at Pilot Project) 40% reduction in number of incidents 35% reduction in lost profit 25% reduction in local Operations 16% reduction in incidents duration Distribution Network Simulation software Calculate SAIDI reduction as a function of number of automated switchgears Optimizes Investment in Distribution Network
Smart Grid & Smart Metering Challenge Conclusions The scope of a Smart Grid / Smart Metering Roll-Out is the biggest challenge more than the technical challenges Smart Metering technology impact directly in the three project constraints: scope, time and cost Plug & Play, interchangeability, interoperability and scalability features help to reduce time, cost and eases project management Developing specific software tools is a key factor for Project Feasibility MV Supervision/Automation has a high impact in Reliability and Efficiency Distribution Simulation software optimizes Investment Iberdrola E&C willing to supply South African SG development
