Workshop LeoTech Altern Conference Altern, Technik, Produkte, Dienstleistungen Harnack-Haus Haus der Max-Planck-Gesellschaft, Berlin Ubiquitous computing in adulthood and dodage old Albrecht Schmidt University of Duisburg Essen

Overview 1. Introducing Ubiquitous Computing and Pervasive Computing 2. Research overview selected projects 3. Approaches to ubiquitous computing and research prototypes around the world 4. Moving forward directions for ubiquitous computing research for an ageing society 5. Conclusion & Discussion Albrecht Schmidt LeoTech Altern, Technik, Produkte, Dienstleistungen 2

Ageing Society Everyone is concerned earlier or later Different roles giving care / receiving care technology should support all roles! Issue that drive research Ratio between young and old people Losing flexibility, self determination, mobility How much ageing can we afford? Family structure, social networks Interweaving life and work? Albrecht Schmidt LeoTech Altern, Technik, Produkte, Dienstleistungen 3

My Definition iti of Pervasive Computing Pervasive computing describes the trend dthat t connected computational devices become interwoven with artifacts t in our everyday life. Hence processing, sensing, activation, and communication are embedded into devices and environments making computing an integral part of our daily life Albrecht Schmidt LeoTech Altern, Technik, Produkte, Dienstleistungen 4

Ubiquitous Computing Enabling Intelligent Devices & Environments Processing cheap, fast, small, energy efficient Storage big and fast Displays projection, flexible materials, power consumption Sensors types, speed, accuracy, price Networking global, local, ad hoc, low power Actuators The most profound many, computer controlled technologies are those that disappear. They weave themselves into the fabric of everyday life until they are indistinguishable from it. (Mark Weiser) Albrecht Schmidt LeoTech Altern, Technik, Produkte, Dienstleistungen 5

How many computer* will you use in 20 years while having breakfast? *what is a computer anyway

Research hoverview Selected Projects Albrecht Schmidt LeoTech Altern, Technik, Produkte, Dienstleistungen 9

Context awareness, t tracking, and activity recognition Room that knows who is inside, where and what they do Phonethat knows that you don t want to be disturbed Trousers that know your current activity (walking, sitting, cycling, ) [Laerhoven,00] [Schmidt,99] [Addlesee,01] Albrecht Schmidt LeoTech Altern, Technik, Produkte, Dienstleistungen 10

Implicit interaction and embedded Information Interaction with systems by interacting with the real world to accomplish a task Information provided at the right place in the right time without extra effort for the user [Gellersen,02] [Drewes,07] Albrecht Schmidt LeoTech Altern, Technik, Produkte, Dienstleistungen 11

Smart artifacts t and intelligent environment Objects that communicate with other objects an take actions Environments that t are reactive to the users and proactive in providing services [Kranz,07] [Namatame,08] Albrecht Schmidt LeoTech Altern, Technik, Produkte, Dienstleistungen 12

Communication and social networking support Creating awareness between people New forms of communication (haptic, touch, smell, ) [DiSalvo,03] [Mynatt,01] Albrecht Schmidt LeoTech Altern, Technik, Produkte, Dienstleistungen 13

Creating additional memories Recording and preserving visual and audio impression External memory SenseCam Personal Audio Loop [Hodges,06] [Hayes,04] Albrecht Schmidt LeoTech Altern, Technik, Produkte, Dienstleistungen 14

Tangible User Interfaces User interfaces that can be used intuitively Building on previous knowledge and affordances [Bishop,92] [Kranz,04] Albrecht Schmidt LeoTech Altern, Technik, Produkte, Dienstleistungen 15

Towards Implantable computing Symbiosis between human and computer Direct interfaceing of electronics with the body Stelarc Body Ping Design Vision of a phone implanted in a tooth - designed by Jimmy Loizeau and James Auger Albrecht Schmidt LeoTech Altern, Technik, Produkte, Dienstleistungen 16

Technologies & Culture Systems created fit a certain culture The way people in Europe / Germany deal with technologies is different from the US and from Asia Robots for teaching (because they are more patient than people)? Electronic companions and pets to compensate for less social il contact? If we want assistive iti technologies that t fit the German lifestyle and value system we have to be involved in the development! Albrecht Schmidt LeoTech Altern, Technik, Produkte, Dienstleistungen 17

Approach for Research Ethnography driven Technology driven Albrecht Schmidt LeoTech Altern, Technik, Produkte, Dienstleistungen 18

A Research Approach Understand the users world by observation Deploy sensing systems before people are old Learn from common use Systems can create a world model personalized to a specific user by observation (e.g. TV preferences, driving behavior, eating habits,...) Norm values can be aquired d( (e.g. how far you walk per day) and changes can be spotted Albrecht Schmidt LeoTech Altern, Technik, Produkte, Dienstleistungen 19

Privacy Sensible Discussion needed How will it matter? Right for everyone or commodity? GSM trace (you phone provider knows where you are do you care?) Near future scenario Power supply monitoring Water supply monitoring Waste monitoring Albrecht Schmidt LeoTech Altern, Technik, Produkte, Dienstleistungen 20

Unpredictable* Users? Smart Users? Creative Users? *if you have a nail, everything at hand looks like a hammer

Conclusion & Discussion Issues to take into account There are still many hard technical challenges to solve Experimental research is essential We will depend on those system failure/malfunction can be fatal Privacy is a design challenge has technical prerequisites but cannot solved by technology alone Universal design device that create new capabilities are attractive Opt in / Opt out what happens if all kids at school do have a memory prothesis? Will it be acceptable to opt out? See society as a whole design for aging people and their social network Albrecht Schmidt LeoTech Altern, Technik, Produkte, Dienstleistungen 23
